Is there a chance that Paul not "miss" the 80's and 90's? maybe for respect for Linda, maybe because those times makes him think about her... I saw Paul in Montevideo four months ago and he didn't play any song from the 80's and 90's. Why?
I've always suspected Paul avoids the '80s, except for Here Today which is kind of special, because it's the period when he ceased being a hit-maker. That must have been traumatic.
In the early 80's, he had hit singles "Coming Up","Ebony and Ivory" and "Say Say Say". The album TOW (1982) was a big hit so McCartney was doing quite well commercially. He had rough patch in mid 80's but with FITD he returned to form a bit. FITD was #1 in the charts in the UK and reached #21 in the US which is not horrible. "My Brave Face" was his last top 40 single, reached #25 in US. McCartney has played "Coming Up" and "Ebony and Ivory" live. The 1989 tour featured I believe six songs from FITD which included "My Brave Face". McCartney opened with "Figure of Eight" that tour which is the last time he ever opened concert with a solo song. McCartney plays little from the 80's now because IMO he is consumed with feeding people just hits and his latest CD. I don't think the lack of songs from this period have much to do with he stopped being a "hit" maker or the loss of Linda McCartney.
And the loss of John, remember. I think those things can influence. He could play Coming up, No more lonely nights, My brave face... why is he playing Lovely rita or Maybe I'm amazed with his current voice?
IMO - If He can sing "Here Today" for Lennon every night then I don't think the loss of Lennon would stop him from playing other songs from the 80's. Yep, he can't do justice to "Maybe I'm Amazed anymore and should either delete it or change the arrangement but that will not happen.
Well, Paul is a creator of habits, he always say that. And apparently, one of his habits is to play Here Today every night he plays in concert. When he came to Argentina he said in an interview that he has to think to not cry when is playing Here Today. I feel he does it because he feels he has that obligation. Counting... Songs played from McCartney II = 0 (just Coming Up from time to time) From Tug of war = 1 (and just because is a tribute to his best friend) From Pipes of Peace = 0 (in fact, I think he never played songs from this LP) From Press to Play = 0 (it's logic, songs are bad and the production is pathetic, that guy Hugh Padgham made a bad work) From Flowers = 0 There should be a reason.

Beats me why he does not play things from the 80's especially from TOW. The title song is awesome and "Take It Away was a top 20 single. McCartney does not play anything from FITD because once he tours and that record was his most recent release on that tour, he rarely goes back and plays anything from it again. "Hope of Deliverance" (OFG) is one of the few songs he has actually done a few times after featuring it on another tour (1993). I wonder why he feels it is a obligation to do "Here Today"/ "Something" at every show. He has paid his respect to Lennon and Harrison many times now and if he did not do it I am sure the audience would not care. BTW - Does Mick Jagger dedicate a song every night to Brian Jones? Does Daltry and Townsend dedicate a song every night to Keith Moon or John Enwhistle? There are plenty of other examples but I think you will get the point. Maybe I am being cynical but if the roles were reversed, I don't think Lennon would be singing tribute song to McCartney at every show.

I feel that every Beatles song is a tribute to them...to the whole band in fact.

Since Paul is not going to apparently give his Solo Catalogue any exposure through his "live" tours, there is something that would make sense for him to do. In my opinion, he needs a new Compilation CD to cover the years from the early 80's to let's say 2010. Wingspan basically covers the 70's to the early 80's but he hasn't done any compilation to cover the 80's to 2010. By making a big Marketing splash like he did with Wingspan, he can give his unappreciated Solo gems some visability they really need. He has so many good to great songs that could be included. I would do a 2Cd Compilation calling it...Paul McCartney Solo Songs A to Z from 1980 to 2010. By doing the A to Z format, the songs would be intersperced from all the albums in this time period. No covers; all songs should be written or co-written by Paul. If you think about it, most people would agree that the various Solo CD's are generally reviewed per tracks like this: *very good *good *average *below average (especially for Paul) This compilation should be strictly the top 2 tier tracks...very good and good. We might quibble about individual songs as I realize this is subjective but I think that generally most agree which songs by and large are in the top 2 tiers per album. Regardless, I think most Paul fans would agree that this missing CD compilation is necessary for Paul's full career. The Remasters would continue as far as they go but an A-Z Compilation would certainly fit well on top of Wingspan and All the Best. The A to Z breakdown would work in this time span as an alternative to the "Hits and History" division of Wingspan that was more apparent in the 70's. The Industry and Technology has drastically changed towards the younger demographics so the aging music artists like Paul just don't have hits anymore. In my opinion, however, Paul's quality of material in this timespan hasn't diminished at all. Thus the A to Z breakdown would really work. Here is my Tracklisting: CD # 1 About You (Driving Rain) At the Mercy (Chaos) Beautiful Night (Flaming Pie) Calico Skies (Flaming Pie) Dance Till We're High (Fireman) Ever Present Past (Memory Almost Full) Feet in the Clouds (Memory Almost Full) Figure of 8 (Flowers in the Dirt) Flaming Pie (Flaming Pie) Friends to Go (Chaos) Golden Earth Girl (Off the Ground) Hope of Deliverence (Off the Ground) House of Wax (Memory Almost Full) Jenny Wren (Chaos) Little Willow (Flaming Pie) Lonely Road (Driving Rain) Mistress and Maid (Off the Ground) Mr. Bellamy (Memory Almost Full) My Brave Face (Flowers in the Dirt) No More Lonely NIghts (Broad Street) Once Upon Long Ago (Single) One of These Days (McCartney 2) Only Love Remains (Press) Disc 2 Only Mama Knows (Memory Almost Full) Put It There (Flowers in the Dirt) Pipes of Peace (Pipers of Peace) Riding to Vanity Fair (Chaos) Sing the Changes (Fireman) So Bad (Broad Street Somedays (Flaming Pie) Souvenir (Flaming PIe) Sun is Shining (Fireman) Take It Away (Tug of War) The Lovers that Never Were (Off the Ground) This Never Happened Before (Chaos) This One (Flowers in the Dirt) Through Our Love (Pipes of Peace) Too Much Rain (Chaos) Tug of War (Tug of War) Vintage Clothes (Memory Almost Full) Wanderlust (Tug of War) We Got Married (Flowers in the Dirt) What It Is (Run Devel Run) Winedark Open Sea (Off the Ground) Young Boy (Flaming Pie) Your Loving Flame (Driving Rain) Hopefully Paul's people can see this and see its viability for putting some punch to all of these generally unknown songs that in many cases are gems. I know this idea has been put forward before but here it is again. When is Paul going to do a compilation that really puts forward his best works for the period. What do you think? What song/songs that have been excluded that you strongly think should be included and vice versa. Remember the time period we're talking about here. I thought the NEW tracks were just too new. Maybe they would start a new compilation for future CD's.
I have to say, I really like your list... I would have to study it a bit as I'm sure I would want a few more on there Just realized that there are people who are not familiar with the songs on the unreleased album of 87! That was a bit of a shock to me!! How many more songs and people don't even know them!! Does anyone know where I could get a CD of that, BTW? Please PM me! I'm trying to fill some holes in my collection. I know this is a bit off subject, but we're talking of the 80's sooo How come there are so many unreleased songs? How do I get them? I am STILL finding out about new songs, and that shocks me a bit!

Maybe because Jagger/Richards hate Jones, and Paul loves John and George. And maybe because Paul believes that Beatles were the best thing happened in his profesional life.

I'm not sure if this is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Since he has so much material to choose from, it makes sense to focus on hits rather than flops or songs he prefers.
-
If you concentrated on his top 10 hits 14 in the US with Wings and 12 in the UK with Wings then add his solo 80's top 10 singles from both countries you get around 24 hits , if you dropped a few hits you could pretty much fit his well known hit songs on to a single disc . 1. Another Day 2. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey 3. Hi Hi Hi 4. My Love 5. Band On The Run 6. Jet 7. Live and Let Die 8. Juniors Farm 9. Listen To What The Man Said 10 .Silly Love Songs 11. Let 'Em In 12. Maybe I'm Amazed (live) 13.With A little Luck 14. Mull Of Kintyre 15.Coming Up 16.Ebony and Ivory 17.Pipes Of Peace 18.Say Say Say 19.No More Lonely Nights A bit brutal to cull some hits , but you can get it down to 19 hits and you could maybe cull another one like Hi Hi Hi CD's are not selling well so you would have to go with his big hits and call it Paul McCartney Greatest Hits .

You also forgot "Spies Like Us", "Once Upon a Long Ago" & "No more lonely nights", all Top 10 smash singles . I'm amazed at those who say the 80's were bad for Macca. Only a small number of artists had more hit singles & albums in the decade than Paul.

While "Spies Like Us" was a big hit (one of my all-time fave movies), a live version ain't gonna ever happen -- and, frankly, that's a good call if ya' ask me. People say that "No More Lonely Nights" might be too much of a vocal challenge, but I'm not so sure about that. It's a classic.

Just look at Paul's face on the jumbotron, when he sings Maybe I'm Amazed and you will not wonder any longer... If a guy wants to sing a beautiful dedication song to his wife who has passed, then the question is, why don't you want to allow him to?! I've really enjoyed Lovely Rita... It's a great song... He can't please every one so he may as well please himself! If you ran your own business, would you be making the decisions, or would you stop people on the sidewalk outside and let them make the decision!?! well, you know what I mean... Peace and Love Don't get me wrong, I have my own list of songs which some of them, I don't even think people even know are Paul's songs... so I do understand...

I know he does it for feelings... but I think he could play other songs, I mean songs that his current voice can reach. I love Maybe I'm Amazed, is one of my favorites, but it didn't sound too good in the concert. About Lovely Rita... is other discussion. I like that song but considering he didn't play any song from the 80's (just Here Today), he could move LR y sing one from FITD or PoP. It's my opinion, but they are just little details. Macca's show is always amazing!!

Here is my compilation (not necessarily my favourites) though I don't like at all the A-Z idea, because I think the song order is an important thing to make an album work and should be chosen carefully: CD1 1 Beautiful night 2 Coming up 3 Dance 'till we're high 4 Ebony and ivory 5 Fine line 6 Footprints 7 From a lover to friend 8 Here today 9 Hope of deliverance 10 Jenny Wren 11 My brave face 12 My valentine 13 No more lonely nights CD2 1 Only love remains 2 Pipes of peace 3 Quennie eye 4 Riding to vanity fair 5 Rinse the raindrops 6 Say say say 7 Sing the changes 8 So bad 9 Somedays 10 The world tonight 11 We all stand together 12 We got married
