Is Poverty eradicated yet?

You're the one who brought it up...

I know what I said sounded very materialistic, but that's how I feel. I know Tripping will probably say "So a $12,000 goodie bag is a thank you gift? If they gave me that I'd decline it because the Live 8 concert is supposed to be FREE and noone should be thanked for donating their time."
Millions of dollars shouldn't be thrown at celebrities who are up on a stage saying feed the people....
-
Yes, and did the celebrities ask for it, not to my knowledge. And no I don't believe every action a celebrity does automatically make for a headline, so we don't know what anyone did with the bags, for all we know they were left behind, given to their staff, thrown away or used. Again, why not go after people who do nothing at all. You may not agree with the cause and that's your right, but people who contributed, believe they are making a difference. Why not find someone who isn't doing anything at all and criticize them. When did anyone ever make the perfect charity event. I go on the race for the cure every year, and every year we get goody bags. There are tents set up for them. They are part of the event. Some years I accept them and other years I go home. I never thought to question the motives of those involved with a good cause. just grateful they contributed to the success of the event.

Talk to me when the Race for the Cure gives out goody bags that are worth thousands. The last one I received from them had a chart and instructions on how to do a self monthly exam....

Is Poverty eradicated yet? Was Live8 an unrealistic idea, an idea that could never work? Or did it serve it's purpose in creating awareness? Your ideas?
but it's better to have a concert like than never, isn't it?

All that stuff in the "goodie bags" are donated by people who want to promote their products. And, going on stage and performing is probably not as easy as it looks! In fact, I read somewhere that according to this survey, the NUMBER ONE FEAR in America was . . . speaking in public! Now imagine having to perform in front of millions! Scarey! If you don't believe me, next time you have a chance, go out and sing at a Kareokee bar. It is hard! When the D.J. calls your name! You're like freaking out! Once you're on stage, it's all right! And, when you get off "the stage" and everybody claps, you feel a sort of high. It's fun to do sometimes, but I couldn't imagine having to do something like that for a living. I admire artists! Just for having the guts to go out there and do their thing!

All I can say about poverty, is it is still present. I wonder how many of those who help with the fund raising actually go into the areas affected by poverty and see the houses that need to be fixed or the places where there may or may not be running water. Or even the rural areas where people are almost too far away from any job sites to gain employment or to get the areas for help WeLl I think that at times the ones who raise funds needs to take a good hard luck at the ones who really need the help and take an active role sometime after the show to make sure those who need the assistance are actually getting the assistance. love doris.

All I can say is that, the way the world is now, poverty can not be erradicated. If the poor countries started to develop fast they would collapse the whole world economy (increasing petrol consume, etc.). So what we have to change is the "first world" ways instead of turning them like we are.
-
True, that we need to change the way 1st world countries live. However, we also cannot ignore the problems of poverty and AIDS around the globe. while its true that poverty will never go completely away, there is a serious need for it to at least be minimized. There are people all over the globe who go through hell with AIDS and poverty. And they need to be helped.

what do you suggest? paul should give all his money away?

Honestly, beginning to think one has to define poverty before one can eradicate it. I don't beleive it is just about money. To be continued..........
