thanks for all the info, birthday and david. what threw me was thinking the lordship title is still inherited, had a vague notion it still is, i also had the impression tony blair had done something to the house of lords or even abolished it, which were 'stupid american' notions. ignorant and uninformed. 'lord webber' doesn't sound quite right, does it? he isn't tremendously talented in the genuis or near genuis range, is he? ... only has a few really good songs, if that, but there again i might be displaying some ignorance. i guess he did 'cats'? i love cats the creatures but don't know if i'd love 'cats' the musical so much. 'phantom of the opera' seems kind of corny and cheese ball. pseudo-gothic or something. i might be wrong and it's absolutely fabulous, never got into it much. i had a few sarah brightman cds and love the song 'time to say goodbye' she sings with andre bochelli. i never heard of most of piers' 'top 100.' same when looking through 'hello' magazine, most of the faces don't ring a bell, but it's still fun to peruse every now and then. your history lessons manage to be pretty hilarious, david praps you should consider getting published as a humor writer. pen a tickle the funny bone nationally syndicated column in the u.k. and/or write humor books like a modern or post modern p.g. wodehouse or peter de vries. i feel jealous at the thought.

david mitchelson:
Here's my old haunt of Yuk! getting some award for The Shambles (no sarky comments you lot!) being the most picturesque street in Britain....followed in third place by Grey Street in me home toon of Newcastle, like. I always pick the best places to live me..... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1256320/Britains-picturesque-street-complete-Shambles.html
Love The Shambles too David. I really miss York since we moved south 10 years ago. Pity the street often looks like it does in that top picture - packed full of tourists! Still you can see why they come and it all helps the local economy. I see my home area (West Country) is well represented too. Bath's Royal Crescent is glorious and Gold Hill in Shaftesbury is well worth a visit - it's where they filmed the Hovis advert years ago. Steep climb back up to the top of the hill though! Definitely not one to try if you've had a drink!! : Sorry to hear everyone's got the dreaded cold and flu lurgy at the moment. We're suffering too. Won't go into detail but it's not pleasant!. Here's hoping everyone's feeling a lot better very soon.

the top street and the bottom street look pretty good

Aah David get well soon. Sorry to hear this cold is lingering. Fancy a snuggle up?! Linka you as well, horible bugs. Thanks for posting Piers list, did make me chuckle that Ant and Dec and Cheryl ( ops: ) Blow ranks higher in Pier's world. Like to see where they are in thirty yrs, talentless twits! Interesting to hear about the peerage, perhaps we can all do some work together. Love all the pictures of York, must visit one day. David you should think about travel writing.. The South Hams area of Devon is pretty special if you haven't visited yet, Stoke Gabriel and Burgh Island as well as Bigbury are a few of my favourites Will post some of Salisbury when I get a minute, much smaller but lovely Cathedral and Close.

Ow do people..... This bloomin' cold is a git and no mistake.....it's made me feel feverish for two weeks now and doesn't seem to wanna go away.....my fever is not helped by Looooose Heaven offering to snuggle up.......that's more of an offer than I get from the wife.... ......what am I putting up a laughing smiley for, sadly it's true! The top street The Shambles is one of lots of lovely street and buildings in York. Here's another 360 degrees photographs site of York.... http://www.york360.co.uk/ You're right Birthday it's one of those cities that you just long to get back to. Even though I love the South West and spend a lot of time down there (if I get the chance) and adore the fishing villages like St Ives etc, there's something about York. Until I win the lottery and buy myself a big mdoern house in the South of France that's where I wanna be......which might cause problems coz the wife doesn't feel the same way. A couple more of my fave Yorkshire places.... http://www.fountainsabbey.org.uk/ http://www.castlehoward.co.uk/ http://www.harewood.org/ Interesting fact.....Harewood House, but for the abdication of Edward VIII, would have been the seat of the King George VI......a different King George VI to the one who took over the reigns from Edward and was immensely popular, especially during the war years. I think the chance of someone giving me a contract to write this drivel professionally is slim Susy.....unless they're wanting to wreck their magazine or newspaper and send readers flocking to their rivals my tedious columns are best left on here for you lot......Lordy, you all must have done something bad in a previous life....

Lisalou7 Interested to read that you love Bigbury etc. I have a good friend who has a flat (apartment) down there and it is the most beautiful place. Love all that area, Salcombe, Dartmouth and all the small villages with the lovely quaint pubs (well you have to keep your fluid level up). Not too far from you either?
-
Hi Linka, Yep Devon is pretty special. We have holidayed (sic?) in Dartmouth for the past few years. Totnes is another special little place with great shops and a real 'eco' vibe to it. The sea tractor is a real draw across to Burgh Island and one day (maybe even next year when I'm forty ), might get to stay on the fabulous hotel there. It's all art deco but very expensive!! But you never know... Hope you are feeling better and have plenty of remedies!! L7 x

We have great taste don't we and not just in musicians but also in places. I love Devon and Cornwall..... ......keep meaning to go down for a month or so and do it properly. Just applied for a job in Gloucestershire....so that'll be a tad closer... I love this image. Only one photo but I just love it. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1256875/Solar-power-Stunning-picture-shows-Suns-blustery-atmosphere-total-eclipse.html

Wow! That's an incredible picture David, thanks for sharing. Good luck with the job application, by the way. That's a big move from York, but you'll be closer to Devon and Cornwall, so good bonus there. Must admit, while we love Devon and Cornwall, Dorset's probably our favourite haunt down there. Poole Harbour is glorious, but most of that coast is pretty special. That link you posted re Fountains Abbey brought back some special memories. My wife and I used to visit there several times a year when we lived in Yorkshire. Perfect spot, whatever the season. We've taken the kids back there since and even though they don't appreciate it in the same way we do, they know it's pretty special and enjoyed exploring and finding all the follies, tunnels, etc. The way to visit is definitely through the old estate gates through Studley village, not through the new visitor centre. That way you get the wonderful drive through the deer park, down to the lakeside. I love the fact that the Aislabie family who designed the Studley Royal gardens in the 18th Century created the gardens with hidden follies for their visitors to find and the ultimate "surprise view" of the ruined Abbey which they bought and incorporated into the gardens. Apparently ruined abbey were that century's must-have garden accessories. Makes our trellis look a bit naff in comparison.... :

That is an excellent picture, David! Is light a stream of particles that can be bent by the gravity of collected mass...and/or...is light a wave that is bent because it is travelling through a curved field of clear energy? My Dad was English and my Mom was Swiss German...Can you tell?
-
Thanks guys..... Love that picture.....want it up on my screen but the wife insists it's a photo of Pog with his snowman.....fair enough I suppose. ...particles, light, gravity, mass, curves and energy..... .......haven't a clue.....one of THE subjects which i loe but has passed me by......I am a numpty at that sort of stuff. SurSteven The wife used to work at Fountians/Studley so we spent a lot of time there around 2000/2002.......we were courting then......so what better place with a picnic etc.

Now I KNOW I'm wasting my time here..... : .....preaching about this to you lot of ruffians, but I'm doing this in the vain hope that somewhere on this unlanced boil of a site there is someone like me who has wonderful childhood memories of this cartoon strip......from the pages of Score and Scorcher, and Score, I give you....taddah! Jack of United and Jimmy of City......(from the official Roy of the Rovers site). NO?......you ain't got a clue what I'm talkin' about? Oh, well, for future generations, after we've all gone, when all of our ramblings are still being perused by McCartney/Beatles fans in the year 2378 here's is a little of what made me the way I am..... (you do realise that all you put on the internet is there for all time!!!.... .....scary! People could be reading our posts in hundreds of years if they access the archives.....what will they make of us. Oh, perhaps best not to dwell on that one..... ) http://www.royoftherovers.com/comicstories/jackandjimmy.aspx

If anyone can post Adam Faith's early 1960's movie called 'Oh, What A Whopper' on here in full I'll love them forever!....
-
Why am I finding it difficult to post You Tube stuff on here today?...since they changed their site it's almost impossible to use? Anyone got any ideas how I can take something off there and stick it on here easily? Apologies for this but I am incredibly thick!
-
David, I remember 'Roy of the Rovers'. Didn't follow it/him as I was a girl but I remember him. So, you're not losing your marbles yet. Yes, it does make you think what people of the future will think of us ardent 'MACCA' followers who come on here and have a moan and ramble. Hope you are feeling better.
