Paul McCartney 2013 Rumours

Today I have a job interview. If they hire me my first full salary will go directly to Macca's tickets!
Lol. Snap! This is what motivates me at my new job. Even though I don't earn very much, I know I'll be blowing the majority of whatever I save on Macca tickets. Totally going for a package, too. I hope Paul appreciates what we do to see him!

He does. That's why he keeps the songs in their original keys, and he sings his heart out.

I'm pulling for ya', ol' buddy. A helpful hint: Try to work Paul into every response to their questions. On second thought...

Noel Gallagher on his upcoming benefit gig at the Royal Albert Hall: "I'm going to be doing songs I have never done before. [..] I'm not doing the same thing as I done, I did eleven gigs in London last year so I can't really get away with the same set." Not a quote by Paul McCartney .

That's a lot of concerts to do in one city in one year. Were all the shows well-attended?

Haha, it's the typical Gallagher exaggeration ;). But now I counted it, he did play about 8 public London gigs in one year though. Few special intimate gigs, but also major arenas part of a regular tour, all completely sold out in a flash of course. (I saw his very first post-Oasis gig at the Royal Albert Hall in early 2010, and then one of this first solo shows with new solo material at the Roundhouse in late 2011, both in London.) But anyway, the quote just made me think about McCartney, couldn't help, haha.

In that case, I'd love for Paul to eight-to-eleven shows in London. I'd be curious to see how he'd handle that challenge. Reminds me of Clapton's 1990 stint at The Royal Albert Hall -- he played 24 shows with various setlists/bands.

The funnier thing is that Paul sometimes talks in interviews as if he does put careful planning and consideration into his setlists like Noel. But really he meant "I switch Hello, Goodbye with Magical Mystery Tour and that's it." Did anyone hear that radio interview he did just before the charity gig last year at RAH? He made out as if he crafted the setlist to make it unique to past shows, when really all he did was get rid of about 45 minutes worth of songs to finish for the curfew or something.

McCartney's current set list is about a third solo material and two thirds Beatle material. My guess is he feels his legacy is primarily as a Beatle and secondarily as a solo artist. For McCartney, it IS customizing a set list to remove 45 minutes of music and arrange current set list songs a certain way for a gig. Maybe a more acceptable mix would be 50% Beatles and 50% solo songs. Maybe fans will get that in 2013.
-
I'm happy with a 50-50 mix. But the Beatle-half of that needs updating.

Yeah, I suppose. But he is running out of McCartney penned Beatle songs to perform. I guess he could to a few Lennon - McCartney tunes like I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND, SHE LOVES YOU, FROM ME TO YOU, etc. That leaves: HOLD ME TIGHT WHAT YOU'RE DOING I'LL FOLLOW THE SUN ANOTHER GIRL WHEN I'M 64 LOVELY RITA YOUR MOTHER SHOULD KNOW TWO OF US MAXWELL'S SILVER HAMMER OH DARLING Those would be cool!

You're forgetting Penny Lane and Fool on the Hill, which should be on the setlist now

We both know that's not going to happen ;). Hell, for me it's not even about the solo/Beatles-ratio. Of course I want to hear Paul McCartney playing Beatles songs. It's about the variety. The way he resurrected 'I Will' in a full-band version in 2011 after the acoustic version in 2005, or 'Two Of Us' in 2010 after 2003. Those were golden moments. Who is going to complain about having already heard classics like that live in a tour 5-10 years before? That's why it's so damned frustrating he's playing the same market, years apart, and hardly changes anything. And the stunners he adds, will be gone before he hits another continent. People who saw him 10 times in the US between 2009-2012 heard 80% of the songs 10 times, and for example 'The Word', 'All You Need Is Love' and 'Come And Get It' - ok, solo song, but point still stands - not a single time. Or those who have missed those very few late 2010 gigs 'One After 909'. How on earth did I saw him 7 times between 2009 and 2013 and never heard 'Bluebird', 'Hope Of Deliverance', 'One After 909' among others live!? Same with the US exclusivities in 2005 and the Europe exclusivities in 2004. What's the harm in adding 'You Won't See Me' for the US in 2012 or 'Please Please Me' for Europe in 2009? Just a few examples, but they are endless. I can't see why people are hammering so much on him not having played 'Lovely Rita' or 'Maxwell' or something though. He did about 75% of 'his' Beatles songs live for the first time between 2002 and 2012. They almost all got airtime at this point. He is hardly neglecting anything in the way he does with his solo material. It's really scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point, he almost did every song. If he didn't added 'The Night Before' in 2011 it would have been 'What's Your Doing' or something, and then he would've added the former in 2013 or 2014. He's only got so much time on stage...

Good post. I agree! I didn't even know he played some of those songs live. That's how long they were in the set list!

Without attacking/defending these songs, maybe you can also post the songs you do like in the set list above. There are concert staples and one must be realistic to a degree when doing these; though I do think the set above is a stretch for Paul. If I really could do Paul's set list he would play Live And Let Die twice and Band On The Run every 30 mins.

Roger Waters performed The Wall 9 (nine!!) times in a row at River Plate Stadium here and holds the record for stadium shows in a row.
