Why is John Edwards smiling in his police arrest "mug shot"? It seems peculiar. Why would someone smile at a time like that???
I think he did it so nobody could use the mug shot in a negative campaign ad in the future. It's the same thing Tom daschel did in his mug shot. He dressed up nicely, wore an american flag lapel pin, and smiled.
Too bad not everyone has that option. Hope I never have to find out.

Does President Obama have a chance of being re-elected? NBC recently had a story called "GOP Honeymoon is Over."
-
This thread is mainly American politics. So, do any of you lot here ever vote for a party that isnt the Republic Party orThe Democratic Party? How about The Libertarian Party? I myself couldn't imagine a 2 party state. In the Uk we have the big 3 partys, then some Nationalits partys like The Scottish national Party and laid Cymru (welsh nationalists) and the dome of the more minor partys that do ok but not well enough to be elected to the House of Commons.

We NEED more Parties -- BAD!!! The Two-Party system is killing America. Two faces of the same rotten coin. A coin that's in the Rich mans' pocket.

The film Wag The Dog is probably not as fictional as we'd like to think it is.

The Founding Fathers thought two was enough, didn't they. And they were pretty doggone smart Things were very very different way back then though, aye. We've got the Independent Party as well as Libertarian, isn't there a Green Party too? That Ralph Nadar espoused? I've often thought with all the vitriole and bad feeling between the GOP and Dems it would be nice if somehow the two party system were abolished and replaced with...what? Just more parties? Italy has so many that they must be perplexed and confused.

Actually, George Washington warned us in his Farewell Address:
...I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the State, with particular reference to the founding of them on Geographical discriminations.?Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the Spirit of Party, generally. This Spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind.?It exists under different shapes in all Governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed; but, in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy. The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism.?But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism.?The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an Individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty. Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind, (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of Party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it. It serves always to distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble the Public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection.?It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the Government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country, are subjected to the policy and will of another. There is an opinion, that parties in free countries are useful checks upon the Administration of the Government, and serve to keep alive the spirit of Liberty.?This within certain limits is probably true?and in Governments of a Monarchical cast, Patriotism may look with indulgence, if not with favor, upon the spirit of party.?But in those of the popular character, in Governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged.?From their natural tendency, it is certain there will always be enough of that spirit for every salutary purpose,?and there being constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be, by force of public opinion, to mitigate and assuage it.?A fire not to be quenched; it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume...

Damn, he was so smart...I should have remembered he didn't espouse two parties, nor, for that matter did he want the U.S. to intervene in foreign affairs, get involved in overseas wars, etc. Very wise advice which wasn't taken
-
I do think it'simportant for the electorate to have more choice, as Politics isn't always a balck and white issue and having only 2 partys to choose from does seem black and white. Of course, YOU americans can choose from the other smaller partys when you vote. I'm not entirely clued up on American voting systems but I think if you had PR (Proportional Representation- partys take up a number of seats which is allocated to the 5 of votes they recieve IE 6% if votes nationwide = 5% of Seats in Parliment) you'd feel better about voting for an alternative to the Republic-Democrat system.
-
I agree 100% we need at least three party system. We are divided right down the middle and both party leader are not working for either side. Ralph Nader was a prime example why it cannot work with just people voting. It too costly and there too much corruption blocking a third party.. they got the gig wrapped up. Its a win win either way the rich control. You got too much money in the two parties now. So a third person does not have the resources to make it happen. If you want to understand it, watch a Unreasonable Man, and see how Nader was shut out of trying to run. He than was blamed for Bush getting in. Fact was Bush was getting in because they already changed to the dierbolt computer system and the maker were good buddies with the Bush family and those machine were easy to tamper with. So it was rigged game. For change to happen we need to have the Gates and the Buffets who have deep pockets to start a movement to get us a automatic third party. I think it should be called the labor party. It fits.

Power to the Penguins!
-
Some Pinguinomics: A penguin based economy would lead to prosperity for the world. Cutting taxes and even supporting with public funds to penguin related activies will lead to a penguin-related economy massive growth that would eventually erase all unemployement, insecurity and will fulfill everyone needs. Even those needs that you aren't aware of. Those pinguin related activities should be deregulated and they will regulate themselves because the penguins will always search for a self-balance so they don't need government interference. Also people should lose most of their rights, receive smaller wages and work harder cause the money saved by that would be used for the penguin related activities that will lead, as said, to fulfill people's needs in a more efficient way than the human activities themselves.

Awesome presser by President Obama...he was very strong in saying that there should be no cuts to the most vulnerable without cuts to the wealthy and corporations. So how will the republicans defend all their support for the wealthy and corporatists...and what about the ditto heads who carry their water how can they defend themselves? http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/2011/06/29/president-obama-news-conference
