Star Trek

Well, it's plain to see that Star Trek is visionary about the future, like in technology, you can see all the cell phones, Ipads, etc filmed decades before they we were invented. But the funny thing is the series was an inspiration. The creator of cell phone is Martin Cooper working for Motorola and he had the idea watching an Star Trek chapter with Kirk talking using the "communicators" they had and Cooper thought "I want one like that" and started developing it. And through the years the new cell phones look more like the Star Trek ones. Pretty much like if technology imitates Star Trek. It happens also with lots of things like Ipads, laptops, androids similar to Data who also got the looks of his builder, the project of traveling faster than the speed of light called WARP, just like in Star Trek. I think it's funny.
I Think It's Way Cool, Oliver!!! And, Am Glad You Keep Reminding Everyone! I found the new movie on sale last night and am thinking about getting it and watching it for the first time this weekend.
Just heard on the radio last night that the 50th anniversary of the original show is coming up this September.

William Shatner, called "Captain Jerk" for not attending Nimoy's funeral, clears things up in his new book about his friendship with Leonard N. Shatner explained that Nimoy mysteriously dropped him the last years of his life and wouldn't speak, and Bill didn't know why

I watched it from the beginning (I was 11 then) and I think I've seen each of the Original Series episodes probably at least 10 times each! ETA: I also went to lots of ST conventions over the years and met just about all of the actors. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, Majel Barrett. Trying to remember, but I think I also met George Takei and Walter Koenig. Also met many of TNG cast: Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner (Data), Michael Dorn (Worf), Jonathan Frakes (Riker) and more I've forgotten! I watched all the incarnations including Deep Space 9, Voyager and Enterprise, and met a bunch of them too.

I never lost interest! I've loved SciFi since the very early '60's (Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, etc.)

There is a lot of hard science that evolved from science fiction's projections. A long list actually.

The old flip-phone cell phones were very similar to the communicators on Star Trek!

Hey, good one Nancy! Love all of the incarnations of Star Trek! Patrick Stewart is my favorite Captain... Loved Guinan and her cool clothes on 10 Forward. The Holodeck is the coolest place ever and I hope it's a reality for humans, some day

Can't wait to see the new Star Trek movie (Beyond) in theaters July 22nd. It is sad that this is Anton Yelchin's last time as Chekov before his untimely death. I wonder who they will get to replace him in the next movie?

It'll be interesting to see the new TV series. I saw the first of the rebooted "Star Trek" movies and was so appalled by it that I've never considered seeing any of the sequels. I'd pretty much rather have my eyes gouged out. I've liked all the permutations of the series, with TNG my favorite and "Voyager" a fairly close second.
-
Why were you appalled Bruce? I loved the young Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc.! Simon Pegg as Scotty is the best! (Side note: did you know he played the big fat alien in Star Wars: The Force Awakens who runs the pawn shop and was the owner of the Millennium Falcon when they stole it?) Usually I agree with you on things, but I think you're being a tad over-dramatic!

Can't wait for it to come out as well! So sad about Anton Yelchin A very sad reminder to everyone, to not leave your car running, when you're not in it Sad

That make and model car had a recall on it because even when it was in park it could slip out, which is what happened to him. I see a big lawsuit in that company's future!

Most of it. Artists lead scientists follow. Just watch the 60's Star Trek and you'll see that all that has been invented after the show. The man that invented the mobile phone said that he just wanted to have the kind of device they had to talk to each other in Star Trek. Twilight Zone! that was great!

and there's a new Star Trek movie next month http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2660888/?ref_=nv_sr_1 I hope the new series go back the essence of Star Trek unlike the new movies. The new movies are great, action movies, bit Star Wars-like but they don't have the X-factor that made Star Trek one of a kind. (And not so comercial, of course) It's a bit like turning The Beatles into a three chord punk band, it would be great but they won't be that unique and they won't be the best. Anyway glad they do it again. There was a time there was too many Star Trek TV series in a short span of time, they just had to repeat themselves or running out of ideas for new episodes. Now after 12 year stop, there'll be lots of new screenplay written. And mostly... lots of new things that have happened in the world, big changes, that they can "talk" about in the new show. Yes, because, in case you don't know it, Star Trek is not about the future.
-
I thought that was Star Wars which was a galaxy far, far away (but WAY in the past) Star TREK takes place in the future starting in the 23rd century in TOS.

They didn't reboot Star Trek, they urinated all over it. Nothing about it was remotely faithful to the spirit of the original. The behavior of several characters was absurd, especially Spock. The only redeeming feature was the presence of Leonard Nimoy, who blew everyone else off the screen the short times he was on. This was the only movie I've ever seen that I left genuinely angry that I'd given them some of my money.
