Very disappointed. Apart from the Italy game, the U.S. looked quite terrible in this tournament. Playing a 3-5-1 formation in a match where a draw puts you out of the tournament... doesn't make sense. Ghana will likely play Brazil in the 2nd Round. Could change if Brazil loses to Japan...... right. Italy to play whoever comes away from the Australia/Croatia game. USA on the plane home.

Btw, did anyone watch the Croatia-Australia game? Did FIFA make a new rule that I'm not aware of? I thought if a player receives TWO yellow cards then he was sent off. Simunic was booked in the 61', then was shown another yellow in the 90'. Simunic walked off but the Croatian bench noticed that Graham Poll hadn't produced a red card so they told Simunic to stay on, and he did!! Would've been very interesting if Croatia would've grabbed the winner. All hell would've broken loose after the match. Simunic eventually received a third yellow right at the final whistle and only then was it followed by a red from Poll. I'll be very shocked if Graham Poll is allowed to ref another match in this tournament. Strangley, FIFA's Official Match Report doesn't note the yellow in the 90'.

ops: ops: ops: ops: i thought today was Friday duh....we can't predict the other matches until after tomorrow's games....I think i need a vacation! but still congrats so far to all....

Yes I was very confused by all of that. I could've sworn he was given a red card after the first two yellows. How he was still on the field is beyond me. The ending of that game was very strange.

Basically... 32' -- Simic was given a yellow for throwing ball away while AUS tried to take a quick freekick 62' -- Simunic received a yellow for foul on Kewell just outside the penalty area. 84' -- Simic received his second yellow for foul as AUS tried to counter-attack (Srno grabbed Poll as he reached for the yellow card - Srna was not cautioned) 90' -- Simunic commited a foul in front of Poll as AUS tried another counter. Poll took out the yellow card and held it up for a quick second, then brought it down to reply to something Simunic said. Card was in full view as Poll responded to Simunic. Camera focused on Simunic turning and walking to position himself in defense and you can see him saying something to a teammate. AUS restarts with freekick, and international tv feed focused on Poll a few times afterwards once it was clear that he wasn't sending off Simunic for his second yellow. Meanwhile, FIFA's matchcast (webcast) play-by-play noted that it was indeed Simunic's second yellow 93' -- AUS scores an apparent goal, but Poll walks in and waves his hands. TV feed shows a close up of Poll and his lips appear to say "it's finished". Viduka then hugs Poll. Simunic follows up by saying something to Poll. Poll waves him off (actually gave him a bit of a push) and tries walking away. Simunic follows Poll still talking, Poll stops and produces yellow card followed by a red. Simunic received three yellows in total. Now the fun part. FIFA's Official Match Report initially listed Simunic as having received yellows at 62', 90' and 93+' FIFA Matchcast also had all three listed. A short time later, Official Match Report was taken down for quite a while, then put up again later showing Simunic having received yellow in 62' and 93+' This was then taken down for a few minutes before being put up for good. It's still up http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/match/44/mr.html FIFA Matchcast also removed the 90' booking for it's archive. It's all mute now, but if Croatia had scored a vital third - especially if Simunic was the scorer - spin control at FIFA would've had a hell of a time trying to explain that one. As it is, in addition to the three English officials working the game on the pitch. the fourth and fifth officials (yes, they're using a fifth official. What his duties are isn't quite clear) are from the U.S. And they've put up a website detailing their experiences at the World Cup. (Used to help/aid aspiring refs) And they also answer questions submitted by those who visit their site. They do this all after returning from the FIFA referee headquarters. Their report on this match is very eagerly being anticipated. http://uswcrefs.carealternative.com/index.htm
