This had nothing to do with soccer!!!! I said this about 10 years ago, please!!!!!!! use referees from Norway, Denmark, Chech Republic, Belgium, but this is pathethic!!!! Ok, The portugese won, but please plaese please this was horrible!!!!!!!!!!!! I´m not saying Holland should have won, but the Referee shall have to be send to Siberia! How can you give a yellow card to Figo, this was so darkred!
I actually rated Ivanov highly before tonight. One of my favorites along with Merk, who's come under the gun as well these past couple of weeks. But I don't just blame them because the whole tournament has seen a lot of cards that I felt could've just gone as strong verbal warnings. I think FIFA has told the refs to crack down on... well, on physical contact by the looks of things.
I watched the full match again, this time without the distractions of the internet. ops: I feel that the ref was at fault for not issuing a red card to Boulahrouz for his high foul on Ronaldo, which ultimately forced him to be subbed. From the point of that foul, which only received a yellow, and even more so when Ronaldo went off, the Portuguese were out for revenge. Another play that provided a spark happened in the second half. With Ricardo down injured, Deco continued to advance the ball forward. Whether he did this intentionally to take advantage of the Dutch team, many of whom relaxed, I can't say, but Ivanov eventually whistled play dead, which is custom whenever a keeper is down injured. Once Ricardo was tended to, play restarted with a drop ball, and I think it was van Persie (not sure) who won the ball and the Dutch attacked while the Portuguese defense were relaxed. Why were they relaxed? They were probably waiting for the Dutch to give the ball back to them since they had possession when play was initially halted. What Holland did went against the unwritten rules of "fair play", so Portugal likely figured that if this was how Holland wanted to play, then game on. We can sit here and blame the ref for all the cards, but it's the players who are ultimately responsible for their conduct on the pitch. And if they can't control themselves, the ref has a job to do. And looking at all the cards issued, I really don't have much argument in any of them. Ricardo's booking for timewasting is tough to judge because the international feed was replaying an earlier incident when the card was issued. But I don't fault Ivanov as much as I did yesterday apart from not sending off Boulahrouz early on, which I, again, felt started the whole mess. A red would've told the players right away that no nonsense would be accepted. Instead, all hell broke loose. In the end, thank goodness extra-time wasn't required because the match probably would've been abandoned due to lack of required number of players on the pitch. (8 the minimum allowed)
My message may sound a little desperate. Oh well, I just came back from watching the match in the pub Had a few beers... Though I still think the referee sucked big time. I also think the ref should have given Costinha his second yellow earlier, for the attack on Cocu.

Fwiw, I thought Deco's first yellow could've gone red.

WOW!!! 90' done Italy 0-0 Australia 3rd' injurytime, Italy has a penalty!! Italy down to ten men after Materazzi shown straight red in 50' Italy has used all three substitutes Aussies only used one.
-
And Totti puts Italy into the quarterfinals!!! Ref blows final whistle before Australia can restart. Unbelievable.
-
Ahh, undeserved! ...but that's the name of the game
-
Ehm...
-
American announcers are talking about how it has come full circle: Totti was controversially sent off four years ago against Guus Hiddink's team... And now he's knocked him out of this tournament. I'm still just sitting here stunned.

I think I remember Svenn predicting 1:0; seems my norwegian mate is on the way to become the new prediction champion ... well, on the other hand, I`m beginning to suck! :

Geez. Already up on Youtube!

there are no ties in any of the remaining games is that correct...it has to go until some one wins by adding 15 mins to the clock at a time if tied at game end? Also...that game sounds amazing i can't wait to watch the rerun tonite (in spanish only since my recorder isn't working)...oh well

I wouldn't really call it a classic/must see game. Just the manner and timing of how it ended. If the score is level or drawn ("tied" sounds sooo American ) after 90 minutes, they play a further 30 minutes, switching ends after 15'. If still LEVEL, then five penalty kicks each. (This is the part that English and Italian fans hate and Germans love) If still level after five kicks, then keep going one at a time until one team is ahead after both have had equal number of kicks.

woo hoo, go Svenn good picks for the game audrey

Thanx Sox for the clarification on the level thing you are so right tie is so americana! i think i recall this now from the Bundelisga days....but didn't happen that often...

Ties are meant to be worn. Draws are for football. (not "sawker") But I'll let you slide since you're used to it. Btw, Swiss and Ukraine are 0-0 (that's nil-nil ) with roughly five minutes of extra-time remaining. Looks like penalties perhaps.
-
Okay. 0-0 after 120'. On to penalties. For our scoring, everyone receives 0 points except two people who predicted a draw: Denny Wingman predicted 0-0 and so gets 4 points. He has Ukraine winning on spot kicks. Jackie predicted 1-1 and so gets 1 point. She has Switzerland winning on penalties. Penalty winner gains 1 additional point.
-
Switzerland... X X Ukraine......... X O O O = scores X = miss
