The Official Football/Soccer Thread: 2017-2018 Season

I renewed the league that Daniel and I had going the past couple of years. Here's the code to join the "Macca Board UEFA CL": 483-187 The league is open to anyone who reads this. Whether you post here or just wonder by lurking, if you enjoy playing fantasy football (soccer) you're welcome to come on board. It's very similar to the one played on the Premier League's website, which some are probably familiar with. If you've never played, you basically select individual players from teams playing in the UEFA Champions League tournament. You're given a payroll of 100 euros and each player costs you. You have to spend within your 100 euro limit to form your squad of 15 players so you'll need to choose carefully. The tournament begins next Tuesday and you must have a squad selected before roughly 20:30 Central European Time to be eligible for points in the first matchday. Good luck if you decide to give it a try. It's all in fun, of course.

I've done my team, perhaps I'll change something in the last days. But it's mostly done and even easy to guess.

yeah, even more reason to be embarrassed as i've posted in it about a hundred times already. i searched for the darn thing and didn't find it. i 'm guessing it hadn't had it's title changed when i did my search.

Usain Bolt to train with Real Madrid. Usain has said Real Madrid has make an invitation to him to train with them and that he will go. "Raul and Van Nistelrooy are two of the best strikers ever" And then there's Maradona saying that Messi is very egoist playing, too individualits, like playing in the Messi FC, you know. It seems everytime he has the ball his goal is just dribling defenders till losing the ball. I share the opinion but I must say that all greatest players were like that when they were very young, Laudrup, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Maradona... I guess Pele too. But as they grew up they learn that's not the way to win. Maradona say it's constructive criticism.

Laudrup is coaching in Moscow now. No big clubs wanted him.

I think I've finished my team but I don't understand much one thing in Fantasy Football. All about the change of value of the players. It seems it depends of the amount of people that select the players. So... if now... Lewandowski is the most selected player, his value is meant to go higher, so for the next round the teams who have Lewandowski will win... 1 milion or so??? And if you choose a player that's not very selected like now Daniel Alves, you're gonna lose some money for the next rounds... if you ever sell Alves. Is it so? So it's about looking at the most selected players too, I guess. I changed Alves for Sergio Ramos only for this. I think Alves is more likely to score points but Ramos is more selected. So I changed too Nihat for Arshavin. Arshavin is very selected and Nihat is not.

Not quite. Player values will NOT fluctuate for now regardless of how many people have the same player on their teams. The price changes will happen once the Tuesday games kick off. People will be making changes even before the games end. It is these changes that determines if player values go up or down. Let's say you have Casillas. After Matchday 1 kicks off everything is locked and you cannot change your team for Matchday 1. But you CAN change it for Matchday 2 and more people may decide to add him to their team. This will eventually push his value up from 6 to 6.1 The more people who add him on, the more likely another .1 will be added to his cost. On the other hand, if people who already have Casillas begin to drop him from their team, his price will go down to 5.9 if enough people drop him. And as more and more people drop him, the more likely another .1 will be subtracted from his cost. So the moves made by you and I and everyone else right now will NOT affect the price changes. It's only the moves everyone makes after the game begins on Tuesday that will affect the values. Hope that all makes sense.

thank you for your great explanation. So after the competition starts we should keep an eye on "transfers in/out" to check if some player is getting popular or unpopular in the teams. So if we think a player is underrated, too cheap, that's another reason to sign it
.

Yes and yes. "Teams selected by %" is another statistic I tend to look at but I mostly just use my own judgement. I think we are allowed 2 free player transfers in between each matchday. Any more transfers past 2 will cost you 2 points each, I believe.

No, this time is 1 each round on the first six matchday, then you can keep doing transfers but with the penalty you mention. Then there's not much nothing to do after you set your team for the first matchday. Transfers Use the Transfers page to change your squad for the next Matchday. The number of free transfers which can be made are as follows: Next Matchday Deadline Free Transfers Matchday 1 16 Sep 20:30 CET Unlimited Matchday 2 30 Sep 20:30 CET 1 Matchday 3 21 Oct 20:30 CET 1 Matchday 4 4 Nov 20:30 CET 1 Matchday 5 25 Nov 20:30 CET 1 Matchday 6 9 Dec 20:30 CET 1 Round of 16 First leg 24 Feb 20:30 CET Unlimited Round of 16 Second leg 10 Mar 20:30 CET 1 Quarter-finals 1st leg 7 Apr 20:30 CET 6 Quarter-finals 2nd leg 14 Apr 20:30 CET 1 Semi-finals 1st leg 28 Apr 20:30 CET 6 Semi-finals 2nd leg 5 May 20:30 CET 1 Final 27 May 20:30 CET 6 Any additional transfers made in the same period will deduct 2 points from your total. If you enter after the start of the first Matchday, you can make unlimited transfers before the next Matchday. by the way? why is so much people selecting Lewandowsky? is there a funny story about it or so? I've checked the site of Shaktar Donestk, and he has been a substitute all the matches this year but heis the more selected player on Fantasy Football.

I thought last season they allowed 2 free transfers.
I may be thinking of the UEFA Cup, which is more complicated because there are 5 clubs in each group. Thus one club will be without a game and it could affect yourlineup, so they allowed 2 free transfers. Anyway, about Lewandowsky. A lot of people have various theories as to who you should buy, how much to spend at each position, and what to spend on your substitutes. -- Some people believe that having strong defenders is necessary to compete in fantasy football. They believe that your defenders must score well to score consistantly because they are the toughest to get points from. You basically need them to get a clean sheet (not concede any goals) to score 6 points. If they give up just one goal, that player will drop down to winning you only 2 points. So people will try to buy defenders who not only play on strong defensive clubs but who also have a reputation for scoring goals. Dani Alves is perhaps the best example. But by buying good defensive players, you limit the strength you have at the other positions (goalkeeper, midfield, forward) because the best defenders cost quite a bit more than most other defenders. -- Other people have the same theory about midfielders, because they often get the most assists, and if they score a goal it is worth one point more than if a forward scores. Someone like Cristiano Ronaldo will be very expensive because of his reputation of scoring goals as a midfielder. But people will be willing to spend that amount for him at the risk of not getting decent valued players at other positions. -- With regard to Lewandowsky... When submitting your starting eleven, your substitutes will only score points if your starters do not play. If one starter doesn't play, your first choice sub will automatically take his spot. If a second starter doesn't player, your second choice sub comes on. You have three outfield subs and one goalkeeper sub and he will only play if your starting goalkeeper does not play. Because of this, some people believe that you should spend the minimum amount on your substitutes. This will free up more money to use on your starters, which will strengthen your lineup. The setback against this is that you are betting that every one of your starters will be playing. And some times last minute injuries occur during warm-ups, or a manager decides to rest a key player because his team has a big league match coming up later during the weekend, or the manager will change the lineup if he's playing away from home because he will be content with a draw rather than going for a victory. All kinds of different scenarios that could come back to bite you if you select key players for your lineup. So people who are buying Lewandowsky (he costs the minimum 4.0) are likely freeing up money to use for a starter. They also feel that Lewandowsky is the best player available who costs 4.0, or who sees the most action during the season. Hope I'm making sense.
-
You make sense but not so much people buying some player that never plays. There are many defenders avalaibles for 4.0 that always play in their teams. I think that maybe some started to sing Lewandowsky, then the next people saw him on the most selected players chart, so they got him too and so on. Or maybe they want someone that NEVER plays so the substitute can't get negative points... My substitutes are all bad players. I bet all for my XI cause they are players that are gonna play for sure, or so they're doing. At least now, in other rounds maybe the rounds are not so importants cause the teams that are qualified are already known. And if some injury I can do a transfer. I'm only gonna have 2 defenders in my XI. About the strategy of good defenders... well, defenders get points for getting a clean sheet, and being in a very defensive team, but that hardly matches with defenders able to give assists and make goals. You know Roberto Carlos did a lot of assist, but some goals were received by his attacks. If a teams has defenders likely to score goals or assists hardly's not gonna receive a goal. It's the Alves, Sergio Ramos, Roberto Carlos situation... so I go for midfielders and forwards that make a lot of goals and assists. Never defensive midfielders, cause then it's the same problem again. But I'm very clueless with goalkeepers.
Sometimes the "best" goalkeeper it's not a good one for this. I don't have a way to predict results on goalkeepers, Valdes was the best one in this last season and you wouldn't call Barça a defensive team neither Valdes the best goalkeeper. I have still 2 doubts on my midfield, cause I don't know where certain players are gonna play this year. I mean Ballack it's not the same playing as defensive midfielder than just behind the forwards. I'll try to check the guessed tacticts for round 1 to decide the last ones.

Exactly. Many people have probably never heard of Lewandowsky and just picked him up because they saw how many other people have him. Or he's the only player they recognize. But it sounds like you understand why so many people have him.

Matchdays 5 and 6 are very tricky because, as you've stated, you are not sure if teams that have qualified will play their best players of rest them. I use to use 2 defenders sometimes. I'm not at the moment, but maybe later in the tournament.

I tend to agree with you. Someone on another forum had posted the strategy of good defenders and I felt I would include it here for you to judge for yourself.

Goalkeepers are very hit and miss. Last season I often played Van Der Sar, thinking he probably had the best defensive line in front of him, yet he would concede one goal and screw up my theory.
I use to play 5 midfielders all the time but last season I eased up on it and sometimes only played three.

Yes, if a team is already qualified I think it's a good idea to transfer the players of that team out of your own team. I've changed to 3 defenders. All this time I wanted to have Babel or Kuyt, but as Benitez is quite unpredictable, I don't know if they're gonna play or how much are their going to play, I've forgotten about them and picking some more expensive midfielder that's sure to play. But I've taken that money for changing Arshavin for a defensive player that's sure to play tomorrow.

As I see goalkeeper points as luck or something I can't understand, I've though of choosing Guille Franco cause he's only 5.0 and plays sure in Atletico or Valdes or Almunia for 5.5. But I can't play without Casillas
this is not a logical thing but I want Casillas and Raul in my team. It seems you and me are gonna be the only ones in the league.
Well, reading all this it can only seem very complicate.

It seems Daniel has joined so here we are again. I'm playing too against an old friend of mine of my town. He has made 63 points this night. #661 in the world...
