21st Century Paul:
btw it seems there's something wrong because the fantasy site is giving all the defender 4 points for not receiving goals
They still award two points for not conceding/receiving goals, but the game has added a new statistic for all players (not just defenders), something called "recovered balls" (defined as "clearances completed and gaining possession tackles"). A player receives 1 point for every 5 balls he recovers.

No, I mean there was something at the stats the first day. ALL the defenders had the four extra points for not receiving goals. The recovered balls thing was at the World Cup... I think.

Oh, okay. I didn't look at the scores until after all the games had been played so I don't know what happened before then. But it looks like everything is updated okay.

Valencia and City? When was this? Unless you meant Villarreal and City. Manchester City were quite fortunate to win that one the other day. As highly touted Man City are these days I still like a full strength Bayern Munich over Man City at the moment. I actually predicted Bayern to reach at least the Champions League semifinals (provided they can avoid Barcelona and Real Madrid until then).

yes, yes, Villareal ops: (see how much attention I'm paying to football these days). Well, I think Man City was better than Villareal but they didn't impress me. I didn't see a team who's supposed to be one of the very best in Europe. But well, if they lead the Premier and win 1-6 the Utd...

And while we're at it, we can discuss the tournament itself here. I'm a big Spain fan, but I don't have much hope for them with both Carles Puyol and David Villa ruled out of the tournament. I'm expecting either Spain or Italy to bow out at the group stage to either Croatia or Ireland. I'm thinking Ireland. Germany has been my pick to lift the trophy since last December but it will be interesting to see how the Bayern Munich players perform after that bitter defeat in the Champions League final. Holland also look a great prospect but I'm not fully convinced they can win it all. Recent history sees that Portugal has been their bogey team and Portugal may end up getting out of the group at the expense of the Dutch. England without Rooney for their first two games could be key. Would not be surprised to see France and Sweden advance. Home support will probably see Poland advance along with... Russia?

Germany will win this year.

Looking forward to it. May have to get my sofa re-upholstered at this rate - Euro's 2012 then the Olympic Games. Takes some stamina this you know. Better get into training this weekend - got the Eurovision Song contest to warm up on Saturday for starters, then the Queens Jubilee weekend Friday 1st to Tuesday 5th June . At least with everything bumping into each other - Jubilee, Euro's and Olympics - we can just hang out the one set of flags and bunting for the whole season. Line up the energy drinks and nibbles, feel a snackathon coming on.... Anyone calculated when England will meet Germany in a penalty shoot-out yet? Mind you we did well in the club tournament recently... Martin

Semifinale, if both teams win their group. And Chelsea was bad luck for Bayern, next time we will win again, as usual.

So what did Manchester City win recently and why is Chelsea in this tournament? Sorry, I don't follow soccer ops: but enjoyed seeing the crowd sing "Hey Jude."

Manchester City won the English Premier League, which allows them to wear the title of "Champions of England". Chelsea just won the UEFA Champions League and by doing so they are considered the best team in Europe. They're not, but they did what was required to gain that label. EURO 2012 is for national teams ("country's all-star team" for my fellow Americans ).

As for English clubs and penalty shoot-outs, the last three times a team from England won the Champions League they could only do so through the lottery of spot kicks. From Istanbul (Liverpool) to Moscow (Manchester United) to Munich (Chelsea), the Premier League's best could not get the job done during open play. Then you have the Three Lions, who always seem to get eliminated from tournaments because they can't convert their penalties.

England always get chucked out of competitions because of their blind arrogance towards every other nation. They completely scoffed at the notion of a young German team beating them in South Africa in 2010 having not heard of some of their players. End result 4-1. Possibly the biggest under achievers in World Football.

Thanks for the tutorial, Uncle S.

England come well prepared, of course, having annoyed Fabio Capello into resigning over the demoting of John Terry as captain pending a criminal trial over allegations of racial abuse. As usual we took months waiting to hear who would replace him. And then passed over the pundits/players/fans unanimous choice of Harry Redknapp in favour of a less high profile manager in Roy Hodgson but who apparently comes with excellent credentials...... funny how none of the pundits/players/fans spotted them Who has just two friendly matches and training camp to shake down his team before our first Euro 2012 fixture on the 11th June. Seems like we've already written off our chances and pre-scripted our excuses.... Perhaps we're just clearing the path for our B-team to triumph in the Olympic games tounrnament? Martin

France? You must be joking. Remember their performance in South Africa in 2010?

the bottom line is that even if england did actually manage to make an impression in this tournament it will be no big deal..there are only 2/3 teams ranked above them in the rankings and tournament betting odds. however as usual england as a bet offer poor value to any punter. technically the english team are as dire as ever.even some of the eastern european banana republics play better football. as a proud scot who is in no doubt about the dire quality of his own team ,i will be supporting ireland at this years championships...infact in many ways i will be supporting two teams,'ireland' and whoever england are playing the sooner they are knocked out and their loud obnoxious followers are sent home the sooner we can all enjoy quality pure football played amongst decent followers in a friendly atmosphere. germany will win this time.they have a good young team and they play quality football although not as pretty as the spanish and dutch.
