21st Century Paul:
At least there was no fake, no "agreement" of ending 2-2. Italy via Buffon thanked that. If Spain would have "agreed" to end 2-2 that would have been zero risk... and Spain almost went out and possibly will face Italy in the final.
Near the end after Spain scored and Italy were "only" beating Ireland 2-0, if Croatia had equalized then they would have advanced and Italy would have been eliminated. I was actually rooting for Croatia to score at that point.
ops: Would have been England v Croatia right now. Can't believe Russia went out. I still feel like they were the best team in that group. They were my dark horse to win. Oh well. Spain v France... and they're also in the same group for World Cup qualifying!

funny how the english dont make such a big deal out of clear goals not being awarded when they are benefiting from it. ukraine where the better team from start to finish.infact im pretty sure england are the luckiest team left in the tournament.but hey the easy games are over now...italy [16/1] pre tournament, have more than enough to beat england [11/1] pre tournament. if you look at englands passage to this stage including qualifying and group games ,england have not had to beat one half decent team to get to this stage....quite possibly they will now have to beat italy, germany and spain [in that order] to win this tournament.....im quite sure they will be out very soon...and dont give me any 'heroes' or 'we did well' garbage.....the english team play a brand of football that makes me ashamed to be a footballing lover...

I had to listen on Radio 5 Live as I was driving home from work. The BBC commentator was extremely sympathetic to the Ukranian team and fans for the missed goal refereeing. Something along the lines of: "If that had happened to us we'd be absolutely livid and inconsolable, and the Ukrainian team and fans have exactly the same right to feel the same way. Let's not be hypocritical about the situation" And maintained the same position for the remainder of the game. I personally drew comfort from the knowledge that, had the goal been allowed and all other factors remained unchanged, the final outcome - final table positions and future quarter final match fixtures would have remained unchanged. I do acknowledge that the lift a goal gives a team means that the outcome of the game could have gone against England, but those "what ifs and maybes" speculations apply to all sporting events even without poor refereeing taking an hand. I think everyone but Italia was wishing Croatia to score. What Italia would have done if receiving a goal would have caused Spain's elimination?. But Spain didn't do it. Yes, I don't know what happened to Russia, I expected England but it's gonna be France.

Well, England has always had some kind of luck in that kind of goals, ain't it?
Maybe it's the reward for creating the game or so... Results of our Eurocup after Round 3. 1 unclesox 39 151 2 Oliver 51 134 3 Daniel 37 103 I'm getting close to unclesox with a little help from CR7. We'll see what happens in the 3 final rounds.

I kinda agree with you (for a change) Martin
The commentators and panel were sympathetic up until they started mentioning the Lampard goal which wasn't given, they gloated on the fact that its all swings and roundabouts after it had sunk in England had qualified. Could someone tell me what the official does behind the goal? he was standing in line and must have seen the ball cross the line, I've yet to see any of these extra linesmen offer any help to the refs. fair do's to England, they got the result which takes them to the quarter finals, not many expected them to get this far, but as Lazy pointed out, the real competition starts now, it came as a surprise to me when I read England haven't beaten one of the big footballing nations in a competition for over 10 years, that's pretty shocking for a country who boasts the best league in the world, now they will have to beat 3 of the biggest footballing nations to win the trophy, that's a big ask considering their past record.

do you include the penalty that ukraine should have been awarded in the second half when the ball clearly struck 'john terrys' hand martin in your little prediction of 'what might have been',or is this just another case of english selective memory disease? fair play to the english team for remaining solid and hard to beat [that will always be their best tactic]. however lets not get carried away by a couple of reasonable [but very lucky] wins agains completely average opponents.....

England vs Italy England playing Italy's style... and Italy playing England's style.

I think we have a chance of beating the Italians on sunday but our overall game needs improving like keeping the ball.
-
We need to start playing a bit more aggressively that way we won't have to constantly be defending like we have been doing recently. I'm definatey looking forwards to the England vs Italy match!
-
We need to keep it, pass it when there's an opening and not fall into our age old trap of sitting too far back and defending on the edge of our area if we go one goal up. The defensive midfielder, most likely Parker, needs to be on the ball for the whole match and Stveie G needs unleashed on top form, to be even better than he was against Ukraine. As for Rooney, let him drift anywhere he wants, stick him in the hole behind Carroll and put Milner on the left and Walcott on the right....I'd drop Young who was crap and left Cole exposed for most of the Ukraine match. AS for winning it.....
Well, stranger things have happened. They need to see the French knock the Spanish out. If we gather speed and confidence, if we don't lose the plot and switch off or get too cockywe could sneek it. ......and if that happens, I'll run naked across this board!!
Think I'm pretty safe don't you?!
