Doctor Who

Well.......new news from the deepest and darkest of worm holes out their in the universe is that...... Billie Piper leads the space race to become the new Doctor Who By Liz Thomas She made her name as Doctor Who's feisty sidekick but Billie Piper could become the first woman to claim the top job. The 26-year-old actress was a huge hit with fans and critics when she played Rose Tyler in the popular BBC series. Now David Tennant, who is to quit as the Time Lord at the end of the year, has given his influential seal of approval. Asked if Miss Piper could take on the role, he said a female Doctor was a distinct possibility. 'Why not?' he said. 'It's one of those parts any actor could bring something valid to, because it can be anything and it's a blank canvas every time. 'The difference is a virtue with each Doctor. It's not like you're casting Tarzan where you've got to have somebody who looks good in a loincloth.' Miss Piper, married to actor Laurence Fox, 29, is on a career break after the birth of their first child Winston James Fox last month. Other frontrunners include EastEnders star Tom Ellis, 29, Paterson Joseph, who would be the first black Doctor, David Morrissey and James Nesbitt, the star of Cold Feet. Outgoing David Tennant, appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning, said he wouldn't be surprised if Billie Piper lands the role as his replacement. EastEnders star Tom Ellis is another frontrunner to play the Time Lord Tennant will leave after completing four special episodes of Dr Who to air in 2009. Executive producer Russell T Davies is also leaving before the fifth series, which will be screened in 2010. Bafta-winning writer Steven Moffat will take over. Joanna Lumley was suggested as a female Doctor in 1981 to replace Tom Baker but the role went to Peter Davison. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This is from todays Daily Mail newspaper here in the UK Don't think Rose will get it........think now they'll play safe.......with a man whose 30-35 and white. Some imagination these blokes at the BBC.........'go on risk it for a biscuit!'

I don't rate Billy Piper's chances - after all when left last Rose'd just settled down with her new partner Martin
-
Honestly, if Billie Piper became the new Dr, I might not watch the show anymore. We all know that Paul McCartney should be the new singing Dr anyway.
-
Well, can't wait to see who it will be...but if its a woman, I'll stop watching.
-
What about Kylie as Doctor Who? I know, I know......just wondering if she'd be a good one.
-
She could sing a different song each week - Doctor Who - The Musical.... I see the man/women thing is dividing the sexes here down the middle. Do women watch the show for more than the quality of the storyline? Mind you over the years the Doctor's assistants have been used exactly for that reason - to keep Dad's interest. Remember Leela in her animal skins...... Martin
-
......................................................................mmmmmm!!..... Leila in her animal skins......yummy! Personally I always had a thing for Sarah Jane. If only she'd worn rubber she'd have been perfect......I know, I know, too much infomation!
-
Well yes, Leela was skimpily clad, but I loved her character. The Doctor's been a man for years and years. It wouldn't be the Doctor anymore in my mind if he was suddenly a woman. Wouldn't work for me.
-
They could have the next Doctor as a cross dresser.

Ditto

That just tickled me You never know he might take the part. Please don't take this the wrong way but I think that David Tennant is better looking for a Dr

Bit late bringing this here.... In the UK BBC2 features David Tennant in a one off drama chronicling the relationship between Albert Einstein and a UK Astronomer Arthur Eddington. The gist seems to be based on the premise that had Eddington not become fascinated with the work of Einstein his theories might have not become as publically acknowledged as they eventually did. Set in 1914 the drama explores the difficulties they both overcame in a climate where any form of Anglo-German collaboration was deemed traitorous. David plays the Briton Arthur Eddington and the trailer suggests that a love interest is written in along the way: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ft62c Hopefully this interesting drama will get some kind of world-wide distribution. Better late than never It was a great drama Martin and David Tennant was great in it

Well I've just experienced the icing on my own personal seasonal cake. I knew the programme was "in the can" as I followed the radio broadcast back in July as part of the BBC Promenade concert season, but I'd been unable to spot it in the TV schedules. So it was with great joy to find that the special Doctor Who Prom was to be broadcast today as part of the BBC New Year Day schedule. Simply magical...... The show is now featuring on the BBC Red Button - at the moment just a "The Making Of" special Dr Who Confidential programme, but I'm hopeful that the show will be broadcast that way as well soon. I'm sure the whole show will be available to UK viewers on the BBC iPlayer very shortly. Update, here's the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00g82f9/Doctor_Who_at_the_Proms/ For those that can, catch it if you can Martin By The Way..... Forgot to visit and share my impressions of the Xmas Special. Enjoyable enough and once the "Next Doctor" bit had unfolded and explained the teaser trailers it was fun enough. But to be honest I'm still hung over from the epic two part season finale starring Rose, Captain Jack, Sarah-Jane, Donna, Martha et al. I knew that any episode was going to have problems following that stormer of an story. Anyway I'll be watching it again a few more times and looking forward to this years episodes.....

Breaking news.... The BBC will announce the actor to play the next Doctor Who in a special Doctor Who Confidential programme: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7807742.stm That programme airs tomorrow Saturday 3rd January BBC One at 17.35 As far as I know the news hasn't leaked so it's brilliant that the BBC is going to break it first themselves. They are keeping the "Him or Her?" tease going in the announcement:
The BBC said that in Saturday's Doctor Who special "the actor playing the new Doctor will be giving his or her initial reaction" to becoming TV's most famous time traveller.

You know there's gonna a be a curve ball don't ya!......at least that's what I'm hoping. I want a woman!!........that's nothing to do with Dr Who just a personal choice...... Billie, Catherine Tate, Catherine Zeta, Jennifer Saunders etc have been mentioned. It'll probably be Paterson Joseph......YAWN! The Crimbo episode was good and just what the doctor ordered for the big day.....
-
They have officailly said that those wanting a female Dr Who are going to be disappointed this time. The front-runners arer black actors Paterson Joseph and that bloke who plays Kiera 'Twice' Knightley's husband in the film 'Love Actually' and whose name I can't even say never mind spell..
-
A black actor would be very interesting! I can't wait to see what happens, tho I will miss Tennant very much- he had this Tom Baker-ness about him that I really loved. LOL! I always thought Macca looked a bit like the Dr. in the video for "London Town"!
-
Well, feverish anticipation for all DW fans as todays the day we find out who takes on the role for the next 3 years and under the new regime. The obvious contenders are Paterson Joseph who has been the fave with the bookies for a while now, but others are loitering in the background with Colin Salmon (who played the little girls therapist in the Library episodes) being linked and James McAvoy arriving late. But now there is talk on WHO websites about an obvious and previously overlooked actor to be the Doc......and man with the name to sell the prog on both sides of the Atlantic and around the world, a man with a career stalling who could use it as a re-launch.....HUGH GRANT!!!.........Now that would be an inspired choice!
-
I've just arranged a conflict of interests that means I shall not be, as anticipated, glued to the TV to share the announcement live. However Whovians will forgive me when they learn that I have bought last minute tickets to see the Birmingham Hippodrome Panto Robin Hood. Starring..... ...... John Barrowman! Not exactly sure the storyline is faithful to the usual Robin Hood template as somehow they will end up in the court of King Arthur and at one point battle Titan the giant robot conjured up by the evil witch click here for larger image www.robinhoodpanto.co.uk Martin

The New Doctor is.......Matt Smith.... Matt Smith, 26, grew up with his family including one sister in Northampton. He was head boy at Northampton School For Boys where he excelled at sports, music and drama. Initially, Matt wanted to be a professional footballer and played for Northampton Town Under 11 and 12s, Nottingham Forest Under 12,13,14s and Leicester City Under 15 and 16s before a back injury forced him out of the game. Following his injury, and with the encouragement of one of his teachers, Jerry Hardingham, Matt decided to join the National Youth Theatre. It was during this time that Matt first gained attention at the Royal Court Theatre when he was cast in the play Fresh Kills, directed by Wilson Milam, whilst still at the University Of East Anglia where he was studying Drama and Creative Writing. Already a stalwart of the National Youth Theatre, his performance at the Court led to a variety of theatrical experiences at the National Theatre: in the award winning History Boys (directed by Nick Hytner), On The Shore Of The Wide World (directed by Sarah Frankcom) and also in the acclaimed trio of plays Burn / Citizenship / Chatroom (directed by Anna Mackmin). These roles led to Matt's first outings on the small screen, alongside Billie Piper in Phillip Pullman's period detective stories, The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, where he played Jim, right hand man to Billie's detective heroine Sally Lockhart. These pieces were followed by the lead role of Danny in the BBC Two series Party Animals, the brilliantly observed drama set in the world of young politicians. In a dazzling return to the Royal Court in 2007, Matt played Henry in Polly Stenham's award winning first play That Face, opposite Lindsay Duncan. His performance gained Matt an Evening Standard Best Newcomer nomination and a year later the play had a second life in the West End at the Duke of York's Theatre. In between the two runs, Matt played Guy opposite Christian Slater's Buddy in Swimming With Sharks, Mike Leslie's searing West End adaptation of the 1994 Hollywood film. In this time he also played a lead role in the BAFTA winning BBC One series, The Street, opposite Gina McKee and Lorraine Ashbourne. Matt has recently completed work on Moses Jones for BBC Two, directed by Michael Offer, in which he plays the lead role of Dan Twentyman, alongside Shaun Parkes in the title role. >>>>>>>> The bookies have done alright out of this.......his interview is on the BBC Doctor Who website.
