Doctor Who

I've seen Matt Smith's acting in the Billy Piper Sally Lockhart period dramas but most importantly for me I don't associate him with any particular role. I didn't want a new Doctor where I would be struggling to readjust my perception of the actor. All the main leading candidates carried "other baggage" associations for me so I'm willing to give Matt Smith to opportunity to impress me. Certainly the gist from the people that cast him suggest he impressed them, and the BBC Doctor Who team seldom makes mistakes.... Whilst I'm deeply keen to share David Tennant's final shows as this Doctor the guesswork about Matt's casting and potential assistants is going to preoccupy Whovians for the next twelve months and more. Will they cast an older assistant to this 26yr old Doctor? ... for instance Martin

I've just been thinking about the female Doctor issue and realised that I've missed the plot in this recent debate. We already have a ready made female actor lined up for at least a spin-off series in Georgia Moffat who played Jenny created from the tenth Doctor's DNA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_(Doctor_Who) link won't work from here - copy the above and paste into your browser first. The wikipedia article above has a considered debate about the possibilities that story-line has for the future. On another topic, I thoroughly enjoyed John Barrowman as Robin Hood at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Classic British Panto at it's best, all the regular elements, set piece song and dance routines, fight scenes, ventriloquism, skating (yes on an artifical rink - and, although they featured a brilliant Russian pair from the Dancing On Ice series, John and his leading lady also appeared on skates and performed an reasonably skilled piece themselves) and of course the traditional Pantomine Dame wonderfully rendered by Don McLean. The Robot Titan was a big hit making much more than a token appearance - it's a regular on the commercial performance market apparently: http://www.newsubstance-artists.co.uk/site/page_do--artist/artistID--59/CybersteinandTitan.html Check out the 9.51 minute video! Wonderful - a robot with attitude, delivered some brilliant one-liners. John himself is so charismatic, although his sexuality is well known he played the women in the audience with aplomb getting excited responses to his singing and dancing ( including a few cheeky gyrations ) He mentioned the naming of Matt Smith as the new Doctor Who in passing, but the name really fell on deaf ears - either the audience didn't appreciate what he was saying or had come out before the announcement. I must admit I'd browsed the news on my mobile phone while sat in the audience waiting the show's start. I couldn't wait until I returned home. Exciting times ahead.... Martin

He's already been given the nickname 'Spade Face' by Who fans for his 'peculiar looks'........it'll be interesting to see outfit and assistant and if they bring back the Ice Warriors as planned......like to see the Sea Devils and Yeti's back also. Let's give him his chance, although he's very young to be taking on such a career/life changing role as DW.......hopefully he won't fall flat, especially with Moffatts darker writing. I'm probably being cynical but i feel this has as much to do with the age of the audience as much as his acting skills etc. The chance of say Billy Connelly or Michael Palin getting the role was nil......like the rest of society age is everything.

Matt Smith reminds me a bit of a young Alexander Armstrong. I'm looking forward to see what he brings to the role

Nooooooooooo That's all I can say.
-
Matt Smith sort of looks like Vislor Turlough (Mark Strickson)-companion from the 5th Doctor era, and Prince Harry. Matt Smith Vislor Turlough (Mark Strickson) Prince Harry

Nooooooooooo Just had to say it again.

David Tennant was great as The Doctor and will take some beating.
-
Well, I'll give the guy a chance but he's no David Tennant in the looks dept.

The Whovian/YouTube community has been busy since the announcement collecting clips of Matt Smith to enable us to consider his acting ability to date. Here's two with him cast appropriately enough against Billy Piper - so with a little imagination comparisons are possible:

Martin, you are a COOL moderator. Moderators here actually get involved and have conversations. Man the boards I've been on lately, you got sarcastic "don't step on my toes" kind of moderators. It's like- avoid them at all costs! But here it's so different. Thanks for that.

Complimenting a mod... ......another thing you don't get on other sites...... . See, we love really..... ......most of the time....

Ooh Ooh...... For UK viewers, I saw recently the BBC Doctor Who Prom is running under the Red Button on BBC 1 and BBC 2 interactive service. Having taped this I thought little more of it. However looked at it during an idle moment this morning I found it is the FULL concert not the 60 minutes highlights show broadcast on New Years Day. Don't know how long it will remain available. The show was padded out with "classical music pieces that the Doctor might listen to while travelling around through time and space". Namely: Fanfare For The Common Man Ride Of The Valkerie The Torino Scale Romeo And Juliet - Montegues and Capulets The Planets - Jupiter Good taste Doctor Martin

Sorry for dropping in. I don't know the Doctor Who series, but I just read something that might interest those who perhaps didn't know this like me. Tardis To Ride [Posted by Dave Haber on Tuesday, 01/13/09 7:14 pm] The Beatles performed their hit songs on musical and variety TV shows too numerous to mention throughout the sixties, in England and around the world. But did you know that The Beatles appeared on Doctor Who? On May 22, 1965, the Beatles were seen in the episode of Dr. Who entitled "The Executioners." More here: http://www.beatlesnews.com/blog/the-beatles/200901131914/tardis-to-ride.html There is a video

OH freaky! Gonna check that out pronto!

Excellent find Wunjo!....... ......top marks! I'd heard about this but for some strange reason I hadn't even thought about checking to see if I could find it.... : . This was about the time that Paul (the non-avant garde Beatle.... : )was trying to work with the BBC Sound Workshop that wrote and recorded the early Doctor Who theme music about producing the Boys early works Electronically. Now that would have been something to hear, 'She Loves You' sung by Kraftwerk..... Unfortunately the Boys were too busy to ever go into the studio with the BBC boffins. One thing for certain, watching the clip, the acting and the script are both awful in equal measure.

Vicky: 'I didn't know they played 'classical' music'. She must have seen Paul's future too Paul doesn't need labels like avantgarde or non-avantgarde. He's Paul! And he's unique

That is sooooo great that you would post that clip, Els! Over the holiday break, while at Barnes and Noble, we were hoping to find that episode to purchase. Sadly, no such luck. The triplets have been dying to see it. What a nice surprise to find that you had posted the part with The Beatles. Thanks for that!
