Doctor Who

Russell T Davies gave an interview to The Independent newspaper ahead of the series that referenced this episode in question: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/russell-t-davies-return-of-the-tea-time-lord-805255.html Here a brief extract - read the rest on the link above.
The BBC promises this will be even more intense in episode six, "The Doctor's Daughter". Is Davies going to say how come the most eligible ? but elusive ? bachelor in the universe has got a child? "No! Shut up! Mind you, we'll never get to week six without someone blabbing." Out on the fansites, they're guessing aliens will pinch the Doctor's DNA. But that sounds too prosaic, and not enough to justify the hyperbole of a writer who saw part of the episode and calls it "one of the single most audacious moments in Doctor Who's 45-year-history... cheeky, hilarious and brave". The Child Support Agency is involved, says Davies. Donna is "literally like Jiminy Cricket on his shoulder, telling the Doctor what to do as a father. She says, 'I've seen men like that round our estate, with pushchairs and prams. You've gone into dadshock.'"

I'm so looking forward to what Donna will say. Well, I think it's clear that the Doctor isn't a bachelor. He did have grandchildren in the Classic series and in of the new episodes he said that he was a Dad once. It does have a lot of implications, though, as he won't be the last of the Time Lords and he'll have to take some responsibility for his daughter (if the episode doesn't have a reset button or ends tragically). Well, Russel T Davies usually does the "domestic stuff" really well. Can't wait to see it...

ive been a little disappointed by series 4 so far
enjoyed the two parter looking foward to the doctor's daughter next week
-
Mmh, I was kind of underwhelmed by the conclusion of the two-parter. Loved the first part. I was distracted when watching the second part, though, so I'll probably rewatch it. The scene where Donna's Mum crashed the car window was cool. And I loved the "Are you my Mummy?" line. I'm looking forward to the Doctor's daughter, too. So she's real, after all. I'm a bit disappointed that they went with the blonde gymnast type. So maybe, Rose is the mother...

I watched "The Christmas Invasion" for the first time yesterday. These Christmas specials are kind of dark, aren't they? Though it ends on a lighter note with the Doctor "doing domestic" after all, the bit near the end where Harriett Jones orders the destruction of the alien ship is really disturbing. We also get to see the dark side of the Doctor, first with the "No second chances. That's the kind of man I am" bit, then with his rant about our "noisy" planet and then the threatening of Harriett Jones (Though the line "Don't you think she looks tired?" rocks and really sums up how politics often work - on an irrational level). This last thing got me thinking: Is it, after all, the Doctor's fault that she lost the elections against Saxon? And are the events that follow this his fault, at least indirectly?

All the new Dr Who's since it's revival seem to explore the dilemmas of the human psyche by setting up lose-lose situations and forcing him to decide. Look how the Doctor had to destroy the city of Pompeii by chosing to deliberately explode the volcano rather than have human existance destroyed by the alien force. In this weeks episode the situation of how the Doctor comes to have a daughter is instantly explained in the pre-title sequence. Besides the usual seperate story-line unfolding, the episode addresses the conflicts of denial, acceptance and bonding of that father-daughter bond. I won't tell how it unfolds as many will have to wait to see it in one form or another. Martin

Oh yeah. That episode was great. As a student of Ancient History I was thrilled by the many details they got right. They did a great job of showing the eruption of Vesuvius realistically (the pyroclastic surge seemed to be too slow, though, but that's nit-picky of me). The scene were he had to cause the eruption and Donna supported him was heart-wrenching. I'm not sure whether the Doctor should be as reluctant about it as he is, though. After all, it's Earth against some 20.000 people. It may sound cynical but the choice seems rather clear to me. This is the man who wiped out his own people to defeat the Daleks, after all. Then again, he couldn't bring himself to destroy Earth in order to destroy the Daleks in "Parting Of The Ways" (loved the "Coward" line). I guess, if you wield that much power you often have to make difficult decisions ordinary people don't have to face. And I agree that the Doctor is an incredibly tragic and ambiguous figure. I think that the show itself is rather dark in theme but due to its light-heartedness and its humour it becomes mightily entertaining and compelling. In life, tragedy and joy often lie close together, too. I haven't seen "The Doctor's Daughter", yet (Monday, hopefully), so thanks for avoiding spoilers.

I've only recently watched on BBC America. I love the new Doctor and miss Martha Jones. I hear she will be back in some sort of future episodes. She was very smart, and easy on the eyes. Really some of the best writing. I have only seen the series periodically on tv, but it seems they have the best Doctor and writing since Tom Baker.

After watching on Sat, I've got to say that I really enjoyed that episode I'm really looking forward to next week with the Torchwood crew in it
-
I need to watch Sci-Fi or BBC America more so I could watch these... Dean

Here's the teaser trailer to this Saturday's episode: Click Here If You Dare...... PS - only viewable in the UK. That's Episode 12 - so probably part one of a two part season finale. Martin

Episode 12: WOW!!!! Martin
-
I so want to see this episode, but I have to wait. I was foolish enough to read some spoilers, though...
-
It'll be well worth the wait, even if slightly spoilt And to think that was just the first of a two parter. Roll on the series final episode next Saturday I'm so glad I routinely tape these, I will have to rewatch it several times to catch all the "series arcs" unravelling.... The Donna "something on her back" thing which seemed to be resolved last week resurfaced, as of course the cryptic "She will return", widely believed to be the return of Rose, was fulfilled last week after weeks of teaser appearances through the series. But enough for now, far too early for more spoilers. Martin

Episode 12: WOW!!!! Martin
I agree!!

Is this the episode they said that Jennifer Saunders would be taking over for one week only?....or is it Alex Kingston coming back ?.......or 'Jenny' the Docs daughter? I will be glued on Saturday. He is supposed to be back for Dr Who specials later but is still negotiating his contract with the BBC. £100,000 an episode plus other projects on the Beeb and a year off to do some National 'luvvie' stuff and some shakey-speare.......that's a good contract for the tight BBC. Found an introductory piece on Dr Who, telling everyone in the US who doesn't know anything about the series the premise, villains etc......taken from the Wall Street Journal of all places ..... . For once the journo has done proper research and got their facts right.

i was stuned by the ending

The actor Robert Carlyle is being tipped to replace David Tennant as the next Doctor Who. Bookmaker William Hill is offering odds of 2-1 that the Trainspotting star will become the 11th Time Lord when Tennant steps down from the BBC's hit Dr Who show. Speculation is rife that the Scottish actor will quit before the start of the fifth series in 2010. He has refused to confirm the rumours, saying only that he will be doing a string of specials next year.
-
The cliffhanger ending is cruel. It will be a very long week indeed. It might have been a good idea to stretch the finale to 3 episodes like they did last year. The episode was so crammed with people and events we only saw the main villain for like 5 minutes.
