TCM and Classic Film Discussion in General
-
So what's with AMC playing the same movies as TCM this week? Last night it was TKAM and tonight it's GWTW.
-
^ I do not keep up with AMC's scheduling (the commercials ruin the movies for me ops. Does AMC implement themes in the manner of TCM? Perhaps they are celebrating female Pulitzer Prize winners?

"Love is a Many Splendered Thing" Jennifer Jones made me cry, Jeeze Louise Please!--so sad, so sad...sometimes she feels so sad...the same dire thing happened to both men she loved, seemed so unfair.
-
LOVED seeing Bette Davis in her Oscar winning role as Julie in Saturday night's Essential, Jezebel. Tonight, two all-time favorites and classic film collection Essentials... 8:00 PM EST Pride and Prejudice Brilliant adaptation of Jane Austen's novel with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. 10:15 PM EST Jane Eyre Wonderful adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's novel with the lovely Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles.
-
Hay I saw them both, had seen that cherished version of P & P before but not the one of "Jane" and didn't find Orson Wells really appealing in the role, to be honest. Nor was Fontaine very exciting. The film makers really jazzed up their version with some new intriguing twists to the story, though. (New to me.) On second thought Welles did boast some attributes to commend his performance. The whole thing verged on the histrionic and hyper-melodramatic, however, somewhat over the top. That's the nature of lots of classic films with the omnipresent uber dramatic music score highlighting every action and emotion. Used to long ago feel a bit put off by that and by the rushed kind of artificial sounding (sometimes) dialogue, the way the actors said their lines, then suddenly fell in love with classic cinema, just love it. Loved "Breathless" seeing that again on TCM--glory Paris is so gorgeous at night...Paris was the big star in that film...Caught "Spirits of the Dead" based on Edgar Allen Poe stories and was enthralled and dazzled by how Rome looks at night, so ancient, tragic, wild and atmospheric-- but nocturnal Paris is more beautiful at least as shown in "Breathless" and other movies I've seen.

Impressive cinematography in that one. Thanks for the heads up. I would recommend catching the Baby Peggy documentary on Monday, It looks to be a new one. They did a feature on her previously. What a life! http://www.tcm.com/this-month/article.html?isPreview=&id=518225%7C518041&name=Baby-Peggy-The-Elephant-in-the-Room

^ You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the Baby Peggy recommendation. I may have already seen this documentary, but not sure. I seem to recall discussion of her incredible popularity, huge salary, and massive amounts of fan mail. Whether previously seen or not, will try to have a look.

I couldn't find it in their upcoming schedule but it doesn't seem as searchable as it used to be. The Time Machine was on last night. That is one of my earliest movie memories.

The Time Machine Is Awesome! Have watched it many times since it first came out. The Contemporary version is really good as well!

1962 was quite the year, wasn't it?
1962 was a great year for movies! To Kill a Mockingbird, The Miracle Worker, Lawrence of Arabia, Days of Wine and Roses, Sweet Bird of Youth, Lolita, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, the first Bond film, Dr. No, and although I have tried not to fall asleep on several occasions, I still do not know who shot Liberty Valance!
How could I forget Cape Fear? Caught this film early this morning on the Retroplex Channel!

Dave, again, thanks so much for the recommendation! Contrary to what I had been thinking, I had not yet seen much of this material. As I began to think about your recommendation, I realized that the Baby Peggy material that I had seen in the past was from the A&E documentary Child Stars: Their Story. I very much enjoyed Baby Peggy: The Elephant in the Room. I was not expecting such a poignantly moving look into Diana's life. Her survival is clearly a direct result of her extraordinary intelligence and maturity beyond her years enabling her to persevere through all of that chaos. So much courage displayed from such a young child, amazing!
