I finally saw "The Lady in the Van," which we own, and think it's excellent. Very interesting juxtaposition to think of Dame Maggie Smith in her snooty hooty Duchess part on "Downton Abbey" and then see her play a homeless woman (a fiercely independent and strong one, though). The dryly, wryly intelligent British playwright who let her stay on his property in her van really scored big paybacks for helping her, a bestseller, play and then this movie. She'd had a varied often rewarding life, very talented concert pianist, drove ambulances in WWII, really got into being a nun (her particular order made her stop playing piano though and after she became homeless didn't really help her, just prayed for her). Was a real character (actually was real, course, not imagined) and Maggie Smith as might be expected played the lady superbly.

"Maggie's Plan" directed by Rebecca Miller, Arthur Miller's daughter and Daniel Day Lewis' wife. She wrote the screen play based on a short story by another writer. I must have liked it--I viewed it twice--it's a romance movie for somewhat older people (except Greta Gerwig's still in her early 30's, other stars of this are Julianne Moore, Ethan Hawke, Bill Hader and Minnie Ripperton's daughter Maya Rudolph). Very amusing to show how hyper-intellectual Ivory Towers academics can be, and yet still be hyper-romantic, almost hyper-sexual. In this film, at least. Moore and Hawke's characters are authors, professors and avid scholars. Moore's chairs a department at Columbia! Their dialogue and antics are funny. Greta Gerwig works at a university too, as a teacher of sorts, has her Masters and more. But she's more warm, giving, and maternal. A compulsive helper more than just a control freak (though she's accused of that). So "Maggie's Plan" is a good character study as well as a more cerebral rom com

Absolutely Fabulous the Movie recaptures the zany head-spinning crazy flabbergasting nature of the BBC telly series ABFAB and Jennifer Saunders wrote the script as well as playing Edwina (Eddy) again along with Joanna Lumley's hilarious cynical depraved role as Eddy's BFF and partner in crime Patsy--both gals still lost and floundering in a daze of drugs, drink and endless greed to have it all--I loved it. Stella McCartney has a cute cameo as herself ("I can't stand that woman," she moans about Eddy) and Kate Moss is funny perched on a wall at a big fashion party, knocked over into the Thames when Eddy rushes at her in a mad frenzy--hunky Jon Hamm tries to rescue her but fails. He stands out as a handsome American at the affair. Saffy the daughter and Eddy's mom are back and Eddy's daffy assistant "Bubble" who starred in "Little Voice." Lulu proves she can still act (so good in "To Sir With Love"). Wasn't disappointed. More ABFAB, please !!

Currently into watching "Girls"on DVD. Not always a pleasant experience, for sure. But something makes me want to see it even though I wince and cringe now and then. It's amusing how selfish Lena Dunham's character is and how wild Jemima Kirke's role as Jessa is, to name two reasons. And "Marnie" attempts to be a singer, although she can't sing. Checking out "Veep" first season DVDs from the library today, always wanted to see that, sounds real funny. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a great comedian. Scintillating timing and nuances and wry, quirky line delivery. I noticed they have The Sarah Silverman Program and Wanda Sykes and George Carlin DVDs.

just saw "La Dolce Vida" for the first time, and yes, it's a classic stunner... featured a huge tragedy that changed the main character's life, that part was very sad...still thinking about it in wonder and adoration for its profundity and artistry, and for showcasing my Marcello... saw the Danish "The Celebration" a real downer, called a "satire" but I can imagine this really happening, all too well, unfortunately. Family and friends gather for the patriarch's big 60th birthday celebration and his son drops a bomb during his toast, that his father raped him and his twin sister repeatedly during their childhoods which led to his sister killing herself (shudders), not a feel good flick, was it...then saw the French "Fat Girl" which made me feel sick, so lurid and dirty but funny in a way during the first part and then it hits you with a horrible ultra-violent scene that shocked more for being unexpected...I kind of hated that one. Now have "Manchester by the Sea" planned viewing, said to be a very depressing film, but I guess I can take seeing it since I sat through "Fat Girl" and "The Celebration," LOL. Have a Meryl Streep Tommy Lee Jones romantic comedy next up after that. Forgot its title. It should lighten the mood.
