First some sad news: Former NY Yankee pitcher Hideki Irabu committed suicide (by hanging himself)...People that know him say that he had been walking around depressed lately...RIP Now for some good news (if you're Triplets....or bad news if you're a fan of any other national league team )...Looks like the Phillies are getting Hunter Pence in a trade with the Houston Astros...That could be the missing piece they need to go all the way. They already have the best record in baseball...but it's been all pitching. Despite a line up that (on paper) looks like they should be potent, in my opinion they've under achieved (I say that and yet they did score 8 runs tonight against the Pirates - who's currently a playoff contending team)

Welcome to "Pence-ylvania," Hunter!!! Rich, so sorry that I have not responded sooner. I did see your post just before the board went down - with all of that, forgot all about it... Thanks so much for this - brought a smile!!!

Well looked like Heath Bell would end up somewhere other than San Diego. Wish the Angels could have picked him up. Bell said, By the 31st I expected to be with a contender for the post-season, now I'm still with a contender with a lot of work to do. Or something along those lines. How does anyone feel about what happened during the Angels-Tigers Sunday?

I feel like 1) Verlander would've had his second no hitter of the season had he not allowed that bunt to get in his head and 2) Weaver is an a-hole (not that the Detroit hitter who hit the second hr and intentionally rubbed it in is some kind of choir boy)...

Alright being an Angels fan I'll defend Weaver and say he's emotional and shows it And for the whole bunting thing, I'm glad Eybar put down the bunt. I mean we're down 3 runs and we need to get runners on base and get something going.

This is right up my alley--baseball and Beatles together. Wish I could be there.
LOS ANGELES - The Dodgers will host Beatles-themed events next homestand as they celebrate the 45th anniversary of the band's Dodger Stadium concert. Friday Night Fireworks at Dodger Stadium on August 26, presented by Pizza Hut, will be set to Beatles music and on Tuesday, August 30, cast from The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas will perform on the field before the game and throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

Ditto!!! Lucky Dodgers fans - very cool!!!

I live not to far away from Dodger Stadium and would like to go, but to be honest, I really hate what Dodger Stadium has become with all the gangs, and Frank McCourt. Now if this was at Angels Stadium, I'm there.

Former Baltimore Oriole pitcher Mike Flanagan dead at the age of 57...There were no details to whether this was from natural causes or a suspicious death - RIP... I recall living down in the Washington DC area back in the late 70's and early 80's as a high school teenager and my dad taking us up to the old Memorial Stadium to watch Oriole games...I don't know what they do nowadays at Camden Yards...but back then, you could go in and watch batting practice and collect the foul balls and the BP homerun balls, if you (as a fan) caught a foul ball, the announcer would say over the loudspeaker 'sign that fan a contract'(my brother received that honor one time)...they used to play 'Thank God I'm a Country Boy' during the 7th inning stretch and the fans there were basically the best I had ever seen...And the teams were consistantly good under Earl Weaver Growing up and living life as a husband and father for the past umpteen years here in Massachusetts, I had forgotten about those days...and hearing of Mike's death seemed to bring back those memories, but then take a little piece of those memories away at the same time:-(

They played like poo poo last night ops: At least the Yankees are giving us some help (a little irony there:-))

I was telling a colleague at work that the Red Sox have a lot in common with the teenaged girls we teach both like drama and leaving people in tears. wink So help me, they'd better show up to play the next three games in New York! Baltimore should be an easier road trip, but it would be just like the Sox to let a team like the 2011 Orioles (no offense to their fans, but they're not exactly lighting the world on fire this season, right?) be the nail in their postseason coffin by getting swept there...
