The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne
Ohhh, what a great, great book that is. Have you seen the movie? The book is much better.
It's one of the most moving books I've ever read! I know there's a film but I'm (nearly) always disappointed watching a movie after reading the book so I won't bother!

Not sure how far you are so not going to comment on the end yet. Of all the movies based on books there are only 1 or 2 movies that I think equal the book (2 books based on John Grisham novels). Besides those 2, there's not one movie that equals or is even better than a book. IMO.
