Recommended 'A Fight of No Consequence" a novel by Andrew Laszlo A couple of years ago, my mentor and pen pal friend Andrew Laszlo passed away in Montana. A Hungarian immigrant, concentration camp survivor, Andrew Laszlo became a prominent TV and film cinematographer in New York (The Ed Sullivan Show). During his retirement years he became a prolific writer. My favourite story by Andrew Laszlo is 'A Fight of No Consequence' (book title available on Amazon). 'A Fight of No Consequence" is like a contemporary Greek tragedy; a Cajun hustler like King Midas in reverse, seeks fortune and instead he stumbles upon his own redemption. 'A Fight of No Consequence' is an exotic epic which pays homage to the oeuvre of Francis Ford Coppola (You're A Big Boy Now). Andrew Laszlo's perseverance, resourcefulness, ingenuity and witty sense of humour will be missed.

"Carrie and Me" Carol Burnett, very sad with some uplifting, inspiring moments, about Carrie's successful life as an artist post drug addiction and then her battle with lung cancer which ultimately killed her. She had not given up heavy smoking, unfortunately. "Been There, Done That" by Eddie Fisher--it's mostly about his love life with many beautiful women, especially Elisabeth Taylor. Actually the other main theme is his horrifying turn into a longtime drug fiend, even shooting up liquid cocaine and the like
"The Baroness" by Lauren Rothchild about her famous aunt Nica Rothchild and Nica's long time devotion to jazz and jazz musicians, Thelonius Monk in particular, who lived with her the last ten years of his life. She was the equivalent of a Broadway theater "angel" nurturing and bankrolling plays, except in her case, she was an angel to jazz artists. A vivid, harrowing autobigraphy, very well written, by Christopher Kennedy Lawford focusing on his hardcore drug abuse history, that echoed his father's. One by Tatum O'Neal detailing her substance abuse hassles and her very disfunctional family.

I just read a recent best selling novel, "Reconstructing Amelia." Sort of a thriller-tragedy-comedy-drama. Lots of red herrings typical of the thriller genre but it's a bit of a cut above. Delves into the horrors of bullying, ultra sadistic teen persecution of each other in school which can result in teen deaths, at its worst extremes. And how exasperating kids can be, with their not telling powerful authority figures what's going on and getting all wrapped up in trivial silly things like gossip and finding it earth shattering and all important. Illustrates the varieties of cyber persecutions. Also a big thick Jane Fonda autobiography in which she's fairly likable and endearing. Self-deprecating to a fault. Gives pretty good dish on her husbands, especially Ted Turner. And on her spiritual journey to gnostic esoteric Christianity and a "feminist Christian" group. I got some promising looking tomes from the county library Tuesday including nonfiction from Jonathan Franzen, Marianne Williamson and others, and "Shockaholic" by Carrie Fisher. Re-reading "Mommy Dearest" by Christina Crawford. It's harrowing. She may have exaggerated certain heinous events such as Joan Crawford ripping up a rose garden and terrorizing Christina in the middle of the night by bursting in, hysterical, and throwing out contents of her closet and generally tearing up her room and making Christina clean it up and straighten it all back up, right then, using toxic cleaning chemicals
One hopes Christina exaggerated some
Reading an old Cherry Boone book on her anorexia and Carol Burnet's first autobiography. Burnett is one who doesn't use a ghostwriter. She can really write. Christina's is very well written.
