Has anyone ever posted this topic? Who's your favorite character? (mine's Hawkeye-Alan Alda). Why? What's your favorite episode? How many of the great actors are still with us? (I think Alda, Loretta Swit, Gary Burgof, William Christopher, and Jamie Farr are still here. Might be wrong...) Anyhow, thought it might be interesting.

I liked them all, and really liked the funny and stupidly compulsive interactions between Frank and Hot Lips!
I actually knew a guy once named Frank Burns who had a blonde haired girlfriend! The final show was a heartbreaker. -
David Ogden Stiers is still around. He does a lot of cartoons and the occasional Woody Allen movie.

Alan Alda did a stunning turn in a recent Nicholas Sparks cinematic weeper which also featured Clint Eastwood's son and Brett Robertson, Oona Chaplin, Lolita Davidovitch...called "The Longest Ride" special to me for showcasing the beaches and mountains of North Carolina, Danny Huston also c0-starred. William Christopher was another of my faves in "Mash." Father something (was a priest) and usually kind, warm and compassionate, sort of the ideal male, the "new" man, in some aspects. Sensitive. (Cute, too.) Trapper John was funny but he left the show pretty soon. Was a tad naughty. B.J. was handsome and a faithful pal to Hawkeye Alda, the two got up to some fun hijinks together
Alda's character portrayal I found complex and interesting, would reveal unexpected depths at times. I began to find Radar a little tiresome and he did get kicked off unexpectedly from the show after being on it ages, was a shocker. Loretta Swift was a true treasure -
Before M*A*S*H was a TV show, it was an off-the-charts brilliant, funny, genius movie directed by Robert Altman. The show was good, and evolved nicely over the years, but it always felt a bit watered-down after the movie -- which it was, that being the nature of network TV back in the '70s. On a related note, a few years ago I heard Donald Sutherland, who played Hawkeye in the movie, tell a lovely story about meeting Alan Alda. They'd never met, but happened to be passing through the same airport. Alda came up to him and said, "Excuse me. We've never met, but I'm Alan Alda, and I'd just like to thank you for my career."

Awwwwwwe....what a lovely story. True Alan Alda. He's got a new book out--found that out from his web site. Dam_ if I can remember the title. Oh well, it's right there on his site.

Father Mulcahy was the only character I didn't like. He and Reverend Alden were far too kind and levelheaded to be ministers, from my experience.

I skipped watching M*A*S*H .... many times thinking it was a war type of show and that there would be no way to have it be funny or have any humor in it .... Was I ever wrong. When I did start watching it ... I wanted to see it all the time. I liked most if not all characters and the way they did their parts
True to the idea of comedy it could make you laugh, cry, wonder and be stunned. As a side note: A friend of mine and I went to many stores trying to find the just right martini glass that they used in the show. As basic as that sounds ... we found some that were close, but just not right ... soon we found a few that looked the part One of those shows that I could watch the reruns and be okay with it -

I liked Mulcahy. But I guess that's because I grew up with a Reverend who really was that kind and understanding. When I see Mulcahy, I always think of him.

M*A*S*H is one of my all time favorite shows, the chemistry of the original cast was brilliant, and all those who came after were great but to me it never recaptured the magic of the originals. Trapper John is my main favorite character, Colonel Flagg is my favorite recurring character. Frank Burns is one of the great heel characters of all time, a total Ferret Face
It is very difficult to pick a favorite episode but "5 o'clock Charlie", "Big Mac" and "The Ringbanger"spring to mind right away as favorites I got to meet Loretta Swit at a benefit several years ago and I talked to her for quite awhile, she was really super nice. I remember telling her that the Hawkeye\Trapper vs. Burns\Hot Lips feud was pure gold. Good topic!!! -
There's an episode in the 4th season where Hawkeye is in a hut with a Korean family. The entire episode is just Alan Alda doing a monologue without the rest of the cast. It's some great acting and kind of amazing for a sitcom to do an episode like this.
