If someone could have advised me to wait and take a different job, oh so many years ago... *sigh*
What would you have done differently?
Finished the last year of college. Would have had a job better suited to my strengths. It's difficult to put yourself through school.
I started college when I was 22 and finished at 26 (got my BS in Nursing) by going one summer. Wouldn't have been able to do it without a BEOG (Basic Education Opportunity Grant) and a Regent's Scholarship each year. Of course this was 1977-1981 when there were 4 quarters and a full load per quarter only cost $165-$185!! (This didn't include books) I lived at home and commuted downtown about 15 miles. It was the best decision I ever made, to finally go to college. I was in many different secretarial and retail jobs 1974-1977, getting nowhere and making very little money.

And then you think about people like Paris Hilton. She was born with every advantage, could have gone to absolutely any college in the world, but she dropped out of high school.

Less than $800 a year? The books alone cost more than that now.

Tell me about it! My ex-husband and I had to put twins through college 2006-2010. Both went in-state (thankfully) to GA State and UGA.

Love2travel, you seek out a great deal of variety in places to travel to and love to see different places, and I assumed you'd have a variety of jobs as well--have you really held just one job all this time? Not that there's anything wrong with having security like that, a feeling of safety and security. That's a very nice feeling, which I've enjoyed all too seldom. It's been interesting reading about people's work. Maybe more will decide to tell about theirs.

Hi Susy, I can't really talk about my job now. I've been there a long time, and feel stuck, because of the seniority and salary and 6 weeks vacation, I've accrued. My favorite job was working for the airlines Many years ago, before my current job. I was on a 2nd tier pay scale there, so made very little pay. I could fly First Class for very very little, round trip and hotels and cars were very discounted. I used to go to the airport, with friends, many times... and just catch a plane to someplace warm...usually. Go for the day at times, or stay in a very nice hotel for a night and rent a car. This was quite a while ago, prices have gone up, but was still so much fun, to just fly to the Caribbean or South America, Florida and hang out for a few nights. Meet people, have a great time!!! Now it's much harder to get into first class. Some of the people I met in first class, were quite interesting! I love flying... In my first job, I worked at a florist...I love flowers, and so that job was a lot of fun, it smelled heavenly...however, the owner got divorced and it fell apart. She wound up owing me a fortune. I was also a travel agent. There were a lot of perks back then...free hotels and trips to hear about great places to get the traveling customers to go to... I was very good at that job and now use those skills to get great discounts on my trips now. The internet put a big dent in that travel agency business. With computers, once you were able to look things up yourself. Finding better deals without the commissions., that really was the end, unless you had a corporate type job. I worked in a school system as a teachers aide, loved tutoring the young children. ð??? Children are so amazing to work with, just to listen to them, encourage them and to help them find answers... Very rewarding. I was a realtor and flipped houses, I really really, enjoy that. I was able to do that as a sideline, with my current job. My investing partner was too cautious. I turned my friends onto our method, and they made out really well, they bought 12 houses. 2007 was a bad year tho. The market finally seems to be rebounding around the country. I'm really good at that and may try to work into that soon. I went to college to teach children, could not get a job at that time. A science professor pushed me to transfer to a better college to study science. I studied almost every science branch and would have had a degree in Geology, if I hadn't taken my current job. I was considering jobs in meteorology, cartography, astronomy and early on (7th grade)wanted to be an archeologist till I found out, most likely I would not be working in the pyramids I pretty much put myself through college. It was extremely difficult and there were hungry years... Popcorn is a great way to fill your stomach!! I also worked for a number of years, being juried into and selling goods made during the week...at some of the country's top craft shows. I traveled around the country with a group of top artisans in all fields pottery, jewelry, woven textiles, photography, wood, metal, furniture, blown glass. Was very inspired in life, by some of the world's most talented, kind, giving, altruistic people in our country. I've found I'm very adaptable to most things I've tried out... Trying to figure out something new. It's overdue for less stress. They say you should do something you enjoy... That idea seems like a good one

Love2travel, you must not be that close to retirement age if you're considering another career change. Or am I wrong? Me, ever since I graduated college I've been an RN, first at a children's hospital (only for 9 months. Got burnt out because all the kids were dying and my head nurse and I didn't get along, to put it mildly) Then I got into the O.R. and was at one hospital for 5 years and only changed to a different hospital because we moved too far away. Have been there nearly 30 years.
-
When I retire, I'll probably go back to doing Craft shows...photography, painting, clay and stained glass are my favorite mediums...and trading crafts and traveling around the world, doing shows in places in places that I want to visit. I want to see the world, and there are still a lot of places on the bucket list!!! I would like to go back to college and study everything...

Luvs2Travel, I just wrote you a bunch in reply to your fantastic extensive info about yourself, your talents, travels and careers and my post all vanished into the ethers! Doggone it ! Made me feel exhausted to read about it, wish I could accomplish and achieve just a fraction of what you have. No-one could ever say you're lazy ! Fabulous ! You should write a book about it all, about your life. You're a really good writer too on top of everything else

This sounds like one of those jobs where the perks are better than doing the actual job. Imagine getting paid to travel and that's part of your job. There's bound to be a downside, but who cares.

Glad you did ! Look forward to reading it, am about to get kicked off but I will later. I don't see why they would delete it unless it's porn, which it isn't, I'm sure.

What do you mean you're "about to get kicked off?" Someone is kicking you off your computer?

What's a library? (jk) I laugh, but some day they will probably be obsolete.

That's probably why they're adding different usages. Ours has classes there in the evenings. It has a 3D printer. I think it even has a snack bar.

A 3D printer!? I'm going to have to get to my library. A guy from work told me you can take out CD's too !!!
