If you've never seen "Ed Wood," for which Martin Landau won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, it's worth tracking down. His performance is simply extraordinary. Overall the movie is enjoyable but kind of lightweight, but when Landau is onscreen it takes on a whole new dimension. He singlehandedly lifts the movie to a higher level. Just remarkable. Hail and farewell.

John Heard passed away.
He's another great actor who was never going to become an A-list superstar.

Brilliant author of plays and good actor Sam Shepard, 73, from Lou Gerig's disease. His writing was deep and poetic. He probably reached American treasure status, wrote 44 plays, won the Pulitzer Prize. A true intellectual. And was reportedly Oscar-nominated for something.

French actress Jeanne Moreau, 89, most famous film was the head-spinning "Jules et Jim"

He was a great playwright. The Oscar nomination was for acting in The Right Stuff.
