Hurricane Sandy

This thread just reminded me to put a bag of food on our front porch for the boy scouts food drive for our local food bank, since Sandy cleaned them out! Doing that right now!

YAY... I've just gotten my electric back Friday night....drove home and saw the lights on...went in my home and it was warm and toasty!!! It was 12 days without...a very long cold and dark time... My thoughts go out to those who still don't have heat or electricity...or even those who are still struggling with the loss of their house, car and even friends or family in some cases... my prayers go out to them. I had to cancel my holiday plans this week to take care of some damage to my house. I will be going to volunteer in a nearby town that was hard hit by the storm....prayers go out to all

12 days? OMG L2T! So glad you have it back. I know that's terrible. I lost mine for only 2 days during the summer & it sucks big time.

So sad to see & hear about all the devastation & losses. Going to donate a huge sack full of clothes & other items to the Salvation Army.

I can relate to the some of the people who have lost everything in Sandy. First living across the street from the Gulf of Mexico we have had our property devastated a couple of times. Two times since 1995 we had no place there, as it was totally gutted and redone inside, and it took us almost a year to get back in after Hurricane Georges in 1998. I lost all my personal possessions that I had stored there. But we did have another property to live in inland. Now the house I live in has been inundated by water from a landscaper, the house is a frame house and is historic and the foundation was completely undermined. We have no electricity in the back of the house, and only have electricity in the front, as the house was two houses connected by a den and has 2 electric meters and boxes. The walls are falling in and the roof is leaking due to the water. I have no heat. My Mom who is 69 years old has had to move out as we have no heat. No one will help us. And the landscaper got off scot free due to corruption in Alabama. So I do understand what it is like to lose everything materialistic you love. My best friends on the Mississippi coast lost their homes in Katrina. So, I send all my thoughts and prayers and Love to the people who have lost everything they own in Sandy.

We were finally allowed back on the island on Saturday. I can't even describe what happened to my beloved LBI My house was flooded up 1/2 to the ceiling......only objects though and everything can be replaced or repaired. It will take awhile but it will give me and the boys something to do this winter.
-
12 days without power!!!! wth! How did you manage to survive, oops yes you did. Like we did, though i am still pissed off 20 odd years later that the northern half of the village had power after 5 days we had gas heating and cooking but due to safety measures wouldnt work without electricity. only 2 out of the 6 pubs had power after 5 days so the oaps got a warm meal (free). seriously, you have had another storm since but now winter is starting , push your councils to check mature trees becuase even a normal storm or winter weather will bring down 10 times the normal amount. We had two deaths that i can remember on roads due to trees falling on cars within 4 miles of arural village. But more importantly why in the 21st century is power sourced by overhead pylons?? With every natural diaster the authorities are supposed to learn from it but they wont if they are not taken to task.

JennyLP...best of luck to you & yours. Sounds just terrible. and Kittay...hope things get better for you too. Peter...right you are about the power lines. Bury them all!
-
I totally agree with the power lines.....no reason not to bury them all. Alot of questions have been brought up since this storm.......why aren't all gas stations and supermarkets equipped with generators???? I went to an A&P and there were aisles full of produce and dairy in carts that were being thrown away. All these freezers and refrigerators should have had generators. Such a waste of all that food. Banks also....our bank was out and closed for six days....

That's something you don't even think of...the banks with your money! : Yes, maybe most places should have back up generators. And as far as the food...I often wonder about all the food when I see them carting it away weekly at the grocery store. If they don't repackage it to still sell it (they better not) what the heck do they do? Just throw it all out? oh goodness. :
-
of course they throw it away, it becomes illegal to sell. some stores will donate to shelters etc if they pick it up. i am sure i can get you list from a relative of the step father ( a mad lesbian from the nw of the usa ) who as a lawyer works for several charities. and yes i said that to her face for to me from the conservative side of the UK i find nothing in common with either teh republican or democratic parties. i do not care about issues, i care about actions. i heard nothing about taking the usa forward inj the election or rectifying the many faults in the US economny.

So sad to hear about LBI. We have friends that have a summer cottage that we stayed while on holiday in the past. Our neighbors finally got their huge pine tree out of our pool today. Their tree also demolished several of our arborvitaes, some of our wood fence, a section of our pool's security fence & they broke the gate leading to our pool. But we're so much luckier than many other people.

I'm glad Paul's taking part next month in the benefit concert for Sandy, but dread thinking of what the cost of tix are going to be. Worthy causes don't come cheap.
-
I wonder if any webcams were operational when Sandy hit?

People in the surrounding areas here are still having trees removed from their homes/properties.
