Hurricane Sandy

I was watching CNN and noticed that Upper Manhattan in NYC has power and everyone is doing their normal routines...however Lower Manhattan and has no electricity, running water, hygiene, supplies, etc... Can someone explain this to me? The first thing that came to mind was what happened in New Orleans during Katrina? I found this article and am not the only person wondering the same thing. : http://gothamist.com/2012/10/31/outrage_in_the_powerless_zone_a_dis.php
I heard on the news that a transformer/power station had blown up in lower Manhattan, so that was why they have no power, but upper M. does. ETA: I posted this before I read the article--I see what your question is now--Where is all the help for lower Manhattan?

Our power finally came back late Friday. We had started preparing for Sandy several days before. Our damage was minor compared to other peoples. Lost our huge old magnificent blue spruce tree - it fell right across the creek. Our next door neighbor's huge pine tree damaged some of our arborvitaes, part of our wood fence & part of their pine tree is in our swimming pool - destroyed part of our security fence on our pool. It also demolished their shed. Their insurance adjuster's due in a couple of weeks. My husband bought a small generator & we were able to have our furnace & fridge running along with one small light & tv hooked up to our kid's PS3 so we were able to watch movies on DVD. Our gas grill was under cover in our outdoor living room & we were able to cook on grill & make hot water for coffee. We had stocked up on lots of canned goods, bottled water & made sure pets also had plenty of food. Also used 4 antique oil lamps (inherited from my in-law's estate) for light, out of 12 candles, we're now down to 4. Also discovered battery operated Halloween lights make great night lights! Praying for those who didn't fare as well & happy for those who did.

Is anyone still without power, like me? I am soooooo ready to have heat and a working refrigerator... This has been really stressful!! Just got a larger generator today, so hopefully that will let me add more lights and space heaters... now we're waiting for a nor'easter with 60 MPH winds Wednesday... I can't take much more of this!! I lost a hugh 10 foot tree limb and several other trees fell. Hope everyone is OK!! i'm so happy that at least my house didn't wash away like some people's...saying prayers for all. people look like they are exhausted. Heard some people were throwing cans at each other in the supemarket when it reopened...they didnt like the lines and the fact that they ran out of cash for change.... Everyone needs to take a deep breath!! Hope you're all OK!!
-
There are still a lot of people in our town without power ... We (in this part of town) got back power late last Friday night. It's really sad - I just got back tv & internet tonight ... one full week w/o Hope things get better real soon for you
-
you are all still in our thoughts & prayers. Bundle up if you have no heat! Why do these things happen when the temps are getting worse? Good luck! and no can throwing L2T! LOL.

I was watching the news last night and the Dr. Drew show on CNN, showed Dr. Drew and this lady from some tv series going to Staten Island and talking to the residents. The people on Staten Island are suffering in such a way that is just unacceptable. I was so upset about how they are being left to fend for themselves, and wondering where the Government is? It almost made me want to NOT vote this morning. It has been reported that the actual damage and death from this storm is being under reported. I believe it. I wonder if the truth will come out after the elections? Regardless, I am outraged at the way the Staten Island residents are being treated, and wonder how many other areas are suffering such as they are. Just writing what I saw on the news...

I don't think any area is being ignored over any other area....it is just that areas like Staten Island and the Jersey Shore have been hit so much harder than other areas and it will take alot longer to get back to normal. No one is being ignored We haven't even had a chance to go and see our house in LBI.....no one is even allowed near the area but I know my house is unrepairable.....I don't feel like the area is forgotten.....just harder to get to. Here up north.....we had power for a short time and then it went back out again and hasn't returned......I am just so grateful I have family to stay with. Right now the main concern is the Nor'Easter.....I am just praying for the best

We had large old trees down everywhere in my town. I could hardly walk 1 block without seeing a tree down on power lines - some on houses (sidewalks ripped up by the roots of the fallen trees). I'm amazed that we have had power for nearly 4 days. The power was down in our public library (where I usually vote) - voted at a school instead powered by generators. The center of our town (business district) is still in the dark. I have friends who have a place in Waretown, NJ (the bayside of LBI). They made it through without much damage - unlike many of their neighbors. Those who had waters rise above their electrical wiring (over 18 inches from the outsied), will have the get it all ripped out & rewired by law. Their houses were marked & recorded by town authorities.

Exactly.....ours was one of those houses.....I had heard from some that the bay and ocean actually met during the storm. It would have been interesting to see. Hope you and your town recover soon from the storm Andy....best wishes to you.

Jenny, I'm sorry for your losses ... but I'm also glad that you and your family made the through the storm ok. Thanks for your wishes - I'm doing well compared to many others. I've never seen so many people with gasoline containers (lines no less)!!! I had no idea that there were so many with generators ... I'm guessing a lot were for busineses. We have one Chinese resturant in town that was up & running Wednesday night (while most of the rest of us) without generators were in the dark. I give them a lot of credit - they are really hard workers I confess - I bought food there 3 nights in a row

I was just writing about what I watched on the television. The people on Staten Island said they had no assistance. They said pretty much if it had not been for the help of other neighbors there would be much more dead than are presently. One woman was sitting on her once floor of her house which is covered with sewage and water that she was trying to clean the best she could and had been told to call some help line, and waited for over an hour or longer and because she was "emotional" the help line told her to call back when she got the mental health she needed! Another woman ran an ad in the paper saying the she was a mother of a 13 year old daughter who was killed in the storm and her husband and father of the girl too, the mom had lost everything and was asking for help to bury her 13 year old daughter and husband. No one should be in that situation in the USA. I think the US Military should be there like a week ago. There was much more, but I am not going to write it all. There is no excuse for this neglect and that is what it is...I guess one would have to be in it to understand. But I could not believe my eyes, the USA has too many resources to help NOT to be there. It is horrible.I am not there but I am in Alabama, and know what happened and did not in Katrina, and what the residents of Staten Island were telling was very similar in Government response.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those hardest hit by Sandy and now find themselves facing Athena.
-
We still do not have power and heat from Sandy and now Athena comes along.....snowing here now. Hope the winds do not get too bad.....everyone who finally got power back will lose it again. Still at in-laws.....thank God for family!
-
Not much help....but you are all still in our thoughts & prayers.

Has anyonee heard how Paul's house and/or Nancy's house came though Sandy?
-
Jenny LP are you in LBI yet, or have you heard about your house....hope it's OK... I'm still without power as well...maybe Saturday or Sunday now...

No I haven't been to LBI yet but we have word that the house is unsafe and will need a lot of repairs. I am lucky that it is not my main house....others have lost the only house they have. I hope you get your power back soon....we got ours back today. I was talking to the men working on the power and they were from Toronto....they came all this way to help. We have seen trucks from all over the country and Canada and are so grateful for their help and kindness!

I have been keeping all of you boardies up on the East Coast in my hearts for all to work out in a positive way as soon as possible. I could not sleep though last night thinking about the report on the news of this place called Red Hook (?) Brooklyn. There are high rise buildings with disabled and elderly people and children, etc... with no way to have heat or food or medicine, unless they are helped by concerned neighbors who don't have anything either. Then I saw where another area, can't remember where, were saying how FEMA did nothing to help and they had only just recently seen the Red Cross and the Red Cross had no food to givve them, so the neighborhood set up their own command post to help those who have no way of helping themselves. I know I sound like a broken record, but I know that if the USA has the capability of taking over foreign countries, flying unmanned drones over Iran etc, then I know we 'have soldiers who should be out there doing these things now! My Dad was in the 101st Airborne in the 1950's and they jumped out of planes, why can't the military get to these people? I wish President Obama would be more focused on the East Coast recovery and send in all the help they need, instead of his upcoming International trip to Myanmar. Yes, Obama showed up at first...but where is the Government now? My best friend told me it is called "STRESSING THE HERD." Essentially a crisis of survival of the fittest and the weak die off and are weeded out of society. I think it is heartless.
