Outside Lands, San Francisco, CA, 9 - 11th August - ARCHIVE

I'm still reeling from Friday night. I can't believe I got up to the rail. Directly in front of Paul, center. Never been that close and I even dealt with the 9 hours of no toilet. He read my sign (silently) and I got a wink and gave him a thumbs up during the middle of Listen to What the Man Said...made my night. everyone on the rail near me saw it and were all cheering. Such a great moment for me. I didnt know how I would cope with a whole day in one spot but it really went by quickly. I loved the opening bands especially Band Of Horses, and conversed with all types of people. And Paul has never sounded better. That was one helluva show.

My video of San Francisco Bay Blues...major highlight. His little dance was adorable.

In a lunch-table conversation at work today, I found out that a coworker had attended most of Outside Lands. I asked her what the highlights were, and her answer was (I'm paraphrasing a bit here), "To my total surprise it was Paul McCartney." It turns out that she likes the Beatles in the sort of generic way that most people who aren't serious fans do, had paid little attention to Paul's recent material, and wondered if at 71 he could put on a show worth seeing. She was, in a word, totally blown away. She raved on at some length about Paul's showmanship and what a blast the audience had. I just smiled.

Hello All! I'm Livia, the girl who got signed first at the show on Friday. Took me a bit to get signed up over here because I still haven't come down from the clouds! I will never, ever in a million years forget this moment, and I am so grateful that Paul chose me! It looks like Alvita covered most of the bases as far as posting pictures, ect, but if anyone wants to see my full album of pics I you can check them out on my FB page. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10201692051285386.1073741828.1303076970&type=1&l=fdc9bd87bf Also, if anyone has any other photos or video of me getting signed by Paul, pass it along! I WANT IT ALL.

Yes,love that dance, he has been doing variations of it during soundcheck. And THANK YOU for sharing --now *that* is what I call a real concert video! Not like most of the cell phone rubbish on YouTube that masquerades as video. Your Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da is great, too. Thank you!

Well not all people who attend concerts come equipped with big photo cameras and video cameras so all they have are their cell phones to take video with. I know a lot of us on the board do but the average person doesn't.

Congrats Livia! What a wonderful experience for you! The look on your face when Paul put his arm around you was priceless!

I don't have a fancy camera. It's a small Sony with a pretty decent lens. Thanks for the compliments on the vid. And I have something to remember the show. Of course nothing compares to Livia's experience. But at my age, I can't expect that type of attention. I will be content with all the wonderful things that have happened to me...big and small. Outside Lands was pretty big for me...front row is pretty big for me.

I know what you mean. It makes me sad that Paul seems to only pull up the cute young girls. (No offense to McCartney (Harley Blues), but she was the exception to the rule)

I guess that even with a sex change, my chances would be slim.

And if I remember correctly he brought up an 80 something year old woman at one of the Canada concerts last month.

Yes, he did. and there was also a young girl in a wheelchair in Philly 2010. But for the most part, during the concerts themselves, it does seem to be mainly young women who want to be signed for tattoos. During soundchecks, he's been calling up men and women of all ages, when he does bring people up.

But she accompanied a much younger woman, though.

I realized that I never did tell my full story. So I arrived at the GGP at 9 in the morning and I had my 3 day VIP wrist band. There is an exclusive VIP entrance but all of the staff (who were volunteers and didn't know what to do) told me to go to the GA entrance. After disobeying them, I found the VIP entrance and the guard there didn't know not to let people in until 11 and I was the first VIP there. He was confused and inadvertently let me in. So I was inside the venue before it was open and finished setting up. I didn't know what to do so I walked around a lot and made it look like I was busy doing something like an organizer. I would walk fast and hold my phone up to my ear for two hours. It was 10:50 and I made my way to the stage. There were two other people who found a way in early. One found a vendor ticket and went in while the actual vendors were setting up, and the other had a media pass (and here is his Youtube Channel:
) The three of us being the first ones inside were able to get the front rail in the dead center before the gates opened. At 11:00 sharp, "Here Comes the Sun" played over the PA system and the fans (some waited since 2:00 AM) started charging towards the stage. The easy part was over, but the hard part was staying stationary for 11 hours with only a bottle of water. The day went on and the bands went on. During Surfer Blood, the frontman jumped offstage and went up against the audience barricade and gave people high-fives, but he came to me and he kissed me on the cheek (if anyone has a photo or video of this, I would appreciate it greatly.) After that came Band of Horses and The National. The National had a great performance and before the end of their set, Matt Berninger walked through the crowd and thrilled everyone near the front, except for this really annoying hippie lady who was tone deaf and hadn't showered since Jerry died. This is how close I was to him: The National then brought on Bob Weir and Hippie Lady was no longer upset. Then came the DJ... Mixing to the side of the stage, he brought a false sense of joy to those who had never seen the show before and thought that this music was Paul himself. As the notes of "Temporary Secretary" came and faded into the DJ's climactic moment of "The End," everyone seemed to know that this was it. Paul came onstage and was immediately in tune with the audience and their "activities." Of course, he made a gesture of smoking pot and rushed into "Eight Days a Week." Having seen him twice before this year, I knew what to expect: "Eight Days a Week"... "Junior's Farm"... But then, I was hit with "Magical Mystery Tour." This was my first "official" time seeing this song performed ( the other being the Bonnaroo soundcheck) and I enjoyed the new graphics debuted (. Right before "Let Me Roll It," I made a pointing gesture to Paul and he made complete eye contact reciprocated the same gesture back to me. Even the people beside me noticed.I had trouble during "Paperback Writer" when the security noticed my jacket that I took off and hung across the rail. The guard proceeded to pick it up off of the rail and almost walk away with it in hand. I intruded reaching back for it and decided to keep it ...) ([url] ...) Yet "Live and Let Die" came as a climactic point that nearly gave everyone beside me (who were first timers) a heart attack. ([url] "> )the other being the Bonnaroo soundcheck) and I enjoyed the new graphics debuted (. The guard proceeded to pick it up off of the rail and almost walk away with it in hand. I intruded reaching back for it and decided to keep it ) "Here Today" was one of the most moving things I've ever seen. You could just see the emotion on Paul's face and his fragile hands moving along the guitar neck. He came back down and the set rolled on, and I just continued to live in the moment as much as I could... ([url] ...) ([url] ...) Yet "Live and Let Die" came as a climactic point that nearly gave everyone beside me (who were first timers) a heart attack. ([url] ) I felt my face later on that night and I believe the pryo game me a mock sunburn from my close proximity. In a thrilling and scary moment, it comes now that you can't believe you are this close once again. It was really scary though at this moment because they move security away from the front of the stage and off to the side (as if two feet makes a difference) and they all have fire extinguishers in hand. Yet, that was outdone... Paul moved from the piano, to the magical piano. "Hey Jude" began and drew many squeals from the crowd. Hey Jude is one of his most performed songs, but it is a once in a lifetime experience to have a 60,000+ sing-a-long to it, that I've had twice (Bonnaroo was 80,000+) The roar of the crowd behind me battling the power of the band and the PA in front of me was surreal to see that I was at the front near the command center of this crowd. ( The band came up front to soak it all in before leaving to prepare for the first encore. Paul ripped through "Day Tripper" and "Hi, Hi Hi" ([url] )) and I hoped for "I Saw Her Standing There" having seen "Get Back" twice already within the past two months, yet "Get Back" is still always a crowd pleaser. The band went offstage for the second encore, but they were taking a longer time than usual. More stage crew than usual came out wielding music stands and chairs. The equipment looked familiar from earlier in the day and we knew the next song was "Yesterday," so two and two were put together. After the final preparations for the string quartet, Paul came onstage and formally introduced "something that we had already seen earlier in the day" and onstage came the Kronos Quartet (and on the other hand, try to imagine "Yesterday" with Bob Weir.) This rendition was the closest I have heard Paul sound to the versions from the 1960's in person and in videos. It is tied for the most beautiful thing I heard that weekend (because "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails is spine-tingling and it literally brought people to tears.) Only Paul McCartney could go from a beautiful and moving piece, to an all out raging and hardcore "Helter Skelter" (yet Nine Inch Nails can do the opposite, coming from a raging and hardcore "Head Like a Hole" to a beautiful "Hurt.") The only saddening point was when I heard a hipster behind me say "This is my favorite song: Helter Shelter." He wasn't joking unfortunately. This raw performance gave us our last major dose of energy before the sad feeling of the show coming to a close came with the chilling piano chords of "Golden Slumbers." The sadness is always overlooked by the shear musical joy of this powerful close to a show, album, and a career of the Beatles. Closing with the now famous line "We'll see you next time" always fills us with hope and never ending anticipation for the next time. But now comes the critical point. This was undoubtably one of the greatest moments of my life, but Paul's performance at Bonnaroo was just far more energetic. I must draw the point to this. Bonnaroo was a greater show and performance and crowd, but I had a rare and thrilling opportunity at Outidse Lands. I don't know how to end this debate, but I'm thankful that I'm able to have these experiences, debatable or not.Whatever his "next time" will be for me, it will be hard to top.
