I got into David Rhodes music (he's known as just "Rhodes") recently, a young British singer songwriter, and love many of his beautiful songs. He sounds so sensitive and sort of like Art Garfunkel when he sings. And his lyrics and songs are sensitive ballads.  Lovely melodies, none of them really "rock." I love Birdy's beautiful singing voice and some of her songs. She and Rhodes have a song they did together.  They each play guitar and piano too, I think. I know Birdy plays piano. I wonder why the holy heck Rhodes isn't as big a star as Ed Sheeran or Chris Martin of Coldplay, for example.  He's been on the scene a few years, already; so has Birdy.

For a short time I was a really big fan of Birdy, basically on the strength of her debut album but then I quickly lost interest as her management guided her down the 'Adele's little sister' route (ie same studios, same engineers, same producers). A great shame as she showed such promise at the start, even if  she was mainly recording covers. Still a very talented artist though but personally I would liked to have seen her make recordings in the style of  Kate Bush / Tori Amos / Jane Siberry rather than cop out in the direction of Adele and other MOR artists.

Still,I have happy memories of attending Birdy's first London concert and sitting by her in the cafe bar before her performance.

Thanks, Kestrel. I noticed in one or two of her more recent things I heard on YouTube that she was trying too hard to have a hit. It's interesting she did a song onstage with Johnny Halliday years ago, before his demise in 2017. They must like her in France.  You didn't mention Rhodes; I wonder what your opinion is, of him? How is he faring in the U.K. presently?

I never mentioned Rhodes for a good reason Susie,...I've never heard of him !!

Although I'm a huge fan of Let's Eat Grandma (who are very much part of the younger group scene), I'm pretty much out of the loop when it comes to chart music today...or in recent years to be honest. Every so often on the national news there will be a report of some band breaking up after having 10 hit singles and five hit albums....and I've never even heard of them.  I just have no idea who is in the charts or what is selling at the moment I'm afraid.

Just did a bit of research and it seems that, in the UK, Rhodes has had one album released which made #24 and five singles, three of which flopped with the other two reaching 58 & 85.

Thanks for your replies and your info on Birdy and Rhodes, Kestrel. You said you'd not heard of Rhodes previously; I thought maybe you'd check out a few of his songs on YouTube, and let me know what you think. I heard a bunch of his songs very late at night one night not long ago, and some of them really knocked me out. I don't know if part of my enthusiastic reaction was due to being sleepy, LOL. But some of his I really did find beautiful.  And I think Birdy has a beautiful singing voice and I liked some of her stuff, too.

It does appear neither are setting the pop world on fire, presently. They've each been around for a few years (Birdy longer, I think) which would have given them a chance to catch fire, if they were going to...is that too pessimistic a sentiment? They're so young, which bodes well for their future; they've got time. One would assume.
