Set List critique

I wonder why change to a single 5/6-song encore, after so many years doing a 6/7-song double encore? Perhaps to avoid leaving the stage a second time (the first time being after Hey Jude), which saves a couple of minutes?
Yep,save a couple minutes so he can sign someones arm....again.

I've been really hung up on this actually. It really threw my momentum! I liked it in Philadelphia. Although, having the band come out with flags and then leave was a bit confusing. In Charlottesville, it didn't flow as well. I think having Paul return "solo" (so to speak) and do "Yesterday" is a very powerful sight to see and just gives the piece more importance. In Charlottesville, it felt like it had just as much weight in the set as "Another Girl"...which it certainly does not. "Another Girl" is NOT an encore song IMO. So why do one encore? I think it may have been to accommodate the fans on stage like others have mentioned. There were THREE fans in Philly and two in Charlottesville. One of the Philly fans was doing something for a charity for the city and Paul was involved, that was nice to see. But the others are incredibly unnecessary in my opinion. If Paul and his team want to honor their requests, get them backstage and do it AFTER the concert.

I like the idea of one encore, I've always disliked having two encores. Completely unnecessary IMO.

I don't mind one encore, except that we are use to having 2. & it must be a shock to suddenly realize, omg this is the end. It would have surprised me ! Re: fans on stage. I think it belongs at the soundcheck, jmo. Also,no offense or meanness intended, but that one fan up there was totally not necessary,The my sister owes me money one. Come on,she's already been on stage at least a couple of times in the last few years with Paul. Must be nice to be part of a group that knows the band well. More power to you & happy for all that get up there, but there are thousands others that could be called up to meet him. I'll start a line !

Paul's only involvement was to give her an autograph. She said that SHE would write a donation check to City of Hope IF Paul signed her. She held up that sign all thru soundcheck and the concert, and showed it to every SloTix person and usher she could. Of course, anyone can write a check to City of Hope anyway whether Paul gives them an autograph or not, so IMHO it was just her way to try and get onstage by appealing to Paul's philanthropic nature.

I agree...one encore makes more sense (as long as it includes the same amount of songs!) Paul's been doing 2 encores for the longest time...I believe back to the '75-'76 Wings World Tour where he came back to do "Hi Hi Hi", and then return for "Soily".

He did one encore in 1993, I Saw Her Standing There and Hey Jude. It was perfect. No more was necessary. ALWAYS leave them wanting more. Six songs in an encore is excessive.

I don't have a problem with the amount...but the choices are a bit odd. "Another Girl"...in the encore? Really? Even "Can't Buy Me Love" is a bit of a stretch. The others work well...but "Helter Skelter" literally has next to no excitement left in it for me. I would be more than okay if he never played it again.

I see your point. I would rather have a one or two song encore that has dramatic and emotional impact than six songs that are random.

Now that I've had some time to think about the set after seeing this tour for the 3rd and 4th time this week, I've created a serious setlist that would be my "dream" set for a new tour next year. There are a few adventurous moments, but no more than he typically does on a "minty fresh" excursion. I also rotated in several frequently played songs from the past, that haven't been so frequent anymore... If he did this show, there would 14 songs I've never heard live. There would also be 5 never-before played songs...and no, none of them are Beatles songs. There aren't THAT many left that are truly his... Hello Goodbye Jet All My Loving Listen To What The Man Said Coming Up Let Me Roll It She?s a Woman 1985 Pipes of Peace Warm and Beautiful The Long and Winding Road Things We Said Today We Can Work it Out Every Night I?ll Follow The Sun Here, There, and Everywhere Blackbird Here Today Your Mother Should Know The Fool on The Hill Wanderlust All Together Now Lovely Rita Eleanor Rigby Penny Lane Something Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Helen Wheels Band on The Run Live and Let Die Let it Be Hey Jude ENCORE Yesterday No More Lonely Nights Hi, Hi, Hi I Saw Her Standing There Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End

This B-Stage should be only big enough for just McCartney with an acoustic guitar, and the magic piano on a rising lift that extends from below the stage (à la 2005, praying he doesn't fall this time.) McCartney would be on this platform between "Here There and Everywhere" and leaving after "Lady Madonna," Then coming back for only "Hey Jude." This would be a good move for ticketing because you could put a higher price tag on those seats right in front of the platform that would normally go for $200-$300, and it would take McCartney closer to the people in the very back. Someone mentioned earlier about having him tour with a string section or horn section for some songs, and I couldn't agree more. They could perform wings songs as if it were WOA, and someone (Wix) could augment parts to songs and even some that don't originally have strings or horns. Think of things like the soprano sax solo in "Listen to What the Man Says," the piccolo trumpet in "Penny Lane" and the horn sections in "Got to Get You Into My Life." This goes without saying strings in "Yesterday" and "Long and Winding Road." If he were to do this, I would put back in some songs I said I am getting tired of like "Eleanor Rigby" just for the strings. For stage design with the horns and strings, I like the roundhouse setup in 2007 where a false backdrop both projected visuals and revealed the strings.

I finally tried to come up with a set list myself and all it did was convince me how difficult it must be for Paul to choose songs given the incredible wealth of material he has to draw from. So here it is keeping in mind that the show could double to 6 hours and we still wouldn't hear everything we wished for! I tried to pick enough songs that haven't been played in awhile and also a couple of songs identified with John just to spice things up. And, no, I don't think Let it Be, LALD, Hey Jude, Yesterday are ever coming out of the list. Venus/Mars She Loves You She's a Woman Oh, Darling! Letting Go Silly Love Songs Fool on the Hill Every Night This One Tug of War Calico Skies Here, There, Everywhere Too Many People I'm Down Rocky Raccoon Mother Nature's Son When I'm 64 Getting Better Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey In My Life (for John) What is Life (for George) New One After 909 I Wanna Hold Your Hand Birthday Penny Lane Let it Be Live and Let Die Hey Jude I Feel Fine Rockestra Theme Twist and Shout Yesterday Revolution Golden Slumbers/The End

These lists are interesting, but they need more solo songs -- particularly the ones never previously performed.

Yes, something from 'Press to Play' and 'Pipes of Peace'!

I put Pipes of Peace on mine...and maybe I'm a minority here, but there is nothing else on either of those albums I enjoy enough to want it in the show.

I would love to hear 'Only Love Remains' live someday, don't you think it can be fantastic?

I wouldn't mind it, but it just isn't a huge wish of mine really. I can think of at least five other piano ballads that could take its place ranging from all five decades of his career.
