Paul was using a psychedelic keyboard stand that was fashioned to look like a short upright piano from the Driving Rain tour. This magic piano 'stand' housed a Kurzweil PC2X keyboard, which Wix uses as his midi controller. I bought one of these and they sound and play really great. On the more recent Up and Coming and On the Run tours Paul has changed to a new Magic Piano. On the very recent shows there have been shots of the piano from behind so it is clear that there is a keyboard house within the piano frame itself. I couldn't make out any buttons but it still appears to be an electric keyboard making the sounds. Does anyone have any information about this new magic piano? Is it a custom made piano frame or a modified electric piano one? What keyboard is actually inside? Is it another Kurzweil? The new magic piano doesn't look like a repainted Kurzweil or Yamaha upright digital piano for example due to it's side profile. It makes me think that it was custom made, but I'm not sure how the electric keyboard works. It might just house a midi controller keyboard and the actual sounds are coming out of a rackmount module. The only thing I can see is the fluorescent light on the top and also another light strip for lighting the keys on the stage. If anyone has any information on the new magic piano then I'd love to hear about it.

I am not sure. But Paul has played a psychedelic upright piano since 1989. He played it on the 89/90 tour and on the 1993 New World Tour.

I used to think that the magic piano he used during 1989/90/93 was different than the one he's used since the beginning of the 'my band' era...but upon closer inspection, I think it's just a different paint job

The piano used at Glastonbury isn't the one Paul uses these days though, the op is asking if anyone knows what he uses inside the psychedelic case these days.

That's the one I'm used to seeing him use in concert. Complete with water stain in the top middle of the piano.

Btw, that goes back years to the Flowers in the Dirt/Off The Ground/Unplugged era - here's a video that shows the same piano (with Wix at the helm) from Unplugged

Funny thing is I always thought he used the very same phsychadelic piano from 1989 onwards when playing live. Hmmm............

I think you're mostly right in that the same piano has used at various times right from 1989 - however, there was at least one time where, if nothing else, it was at least painted a bit differently, if not a different piano altogether...the first link below is from 1989 (Long and Winding Road) and appears to be the same piano as he's been using lately as well as the one I posted earlier from the Unplugged bit...the second link is from 2004 Glastonbury and there is a sun image that doesn't appear on other examples shown in this thread so far...could be a temporary addition that was removed or a different instrument altogether

Very observant! Makes me wonder if his Hofner's have changed likewise (necks/pickups/electronics) ???

Sorry to dig out that old thread, but on the photo taken here:

at 1h 40m 35s you can see the Kurzweil PC2X) and the movie Space within US (->
at 0min 48s you can see its a Kurzweil PC2X, too) Now he uses the same Knight Piano he used in 1989 / 1990; you can recognize it now by the water stain on it. He last used his Kurzweil Pc2x on the Xfactor Finals in 2009, just look here:
at 7min 22s I don't know why he stopped using this one when he reintroduced his magic piano to his shows in 2010

Yep and he needs to get rid of it IMO. The 60's are long gone and it just looks dumb to me for a man in his 70's to be playing a piano painted like that one.

                                  Maybe I'm amazed !!

The piano he used from 2002 to 2009 was a digital piano inside the case. Since the piano was re-introduced in 2010 he has started using his traditional Knight piano. I would assume it's something to do with technology now allowing him to use his Knight to produce digital sounds for songs like New whereas he needed the digital piano before. We've also seen him use the grand piano to produce a harpsichord sound. Sorcery!
