Lewisohn's Book

well i was going to say is that when a man eats steak everyday he gets sick of it after a while. which is the case with PAUL, but of course in his case he wasn't eating steak. hint hint.
Yeah, even Paul finally told Linda he was done "sowing his wild oats."

Granted I haven't gotten but about a hundred pages in, but he doesn't talk as much about Paul as the rest of 'em, imo. What does anyone else think?

This is quite interesting as I added The Mersey Beat as a facebook friend; essentially Bill Harry's FB page. Facebook Status: Mersey Beat Just bought Mark's book. Won't have a chance to read it at the moment as I several others to start on. I did flick through parts mentioning me, with lots not exactly accurate. He didn't even mention the Dissenters. He says that Brian Epstein marked in his diary on 20 June 1961 that I'd had a meeting with him in his office asking for finance to bolster Mersey Beat. I don't remember that. Mersey Beat didn't even exist then. The first issue was published on 6 July and I went to NEMS, asked to see the manager and met Brian for the first time then. Mersey Beat Comment #1: I am finally fed up with people who write about me without interviewing me or checking the facts. I've seen my own personal history re-written inaccurately by so many people. So I'm going to write my own book after all this time. My Mersey Beat book has been turned down so many times over the past 20 years, despite my belief that there is a market for it, so I'm going ahead and doing it and if I don't find a publisher I'll do it myself as an e-book. What I have which a lot of other writers don't have is insight. I was there, I was personally and closely involved in those early years and I have three dimensional memories, not pieces I glean from other books and various sources, many of them not strictly accurate. Mersey Beat Comment #2: [sic]Dave's book is marvellous. His interviews and information on the people who really mattered and were part of that scene is immensely readable. I was pleased to help out by writing an introduction. I would like to see Brian Epstein's diary which Mark says states I asked him for finance before I'd even met him and before Mersey Beat was produced. I specifically remember going to NEMS with copies of Mersey Beat in July, probably the sixth, and asking to see the manager. I had no idea who the manager was. I'd asked a girl serving behind the counter near the door and she said she'd get him. She went upstairs to his office and Brian then came down the stairs. I introduced myself, showed him copies of Mersey Beat and asked him if he would stock it. He looked at it, I had a chat with him and he ordered a dozen. he called me later that day - my phone number was on page two - and ordered more. For the second issue he ordered 12 dozen. I can't understand how it can be said that Brian had written about me in his diaries weeks before this happened. I heard that Jude Law, who originally wanted to make a film about Brian, had bought Brian's diaries at auction. I contacted his secretary and asked if I could look through the diaries. She got back to me saying Jude had said no. If Mark says that this diary entry took place, at a time I'd never met Brian nor published Mersey Beat, I can only assume, if it written down, that Brian later wrote those diary entries and got things mixed up - and got things wrong, like the errors in his biography. Many people don't necessarily write their diary day by day, some write it as a journal, remembering things of the past. I don't want to go any further into this as it will cause controversy and bad blood among Beatles fans who will assume I'm trying to dis Mark's book, which I'm not. However, after what I've seen written about me (or not written about me), I don't think I will read the book, even though I've bought it.

MetalGod, I'm confused. Who is the speaker in those quotes? Bill Harry? If so, who is/was he?
-
Yes - these are direct quotes from Bill Harry - founder of the Mersey Beat magazine. Here is his impact on Beatle history. http://www.beatlesbible.com/people/bill-harry/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Harry

Told a guy at work about this book and he ended up ordering the unabridged version from amazon uk for something like 87 GBP! What is the exchange rate now? Is it still around $1.65?

It's a little bit lower now....basically $1.60 = £1.00 So at £87, it should cost your friend about $139

Iv'e ordered mine tonight from amazon.co.uk for £74.40. They only had 7 copies left in stock, thought from the original batch they (amazon) might have a first print edition but that's out of my hands. Cheapest is from hive.co.uk £67.99 with free delivery but purchased from amazon as I had credit.

Purchased mine from Amazon too and an attempt was made to deliver it today (by Yodel) but naturally I was out so I've now got to made arrangements for it to be redelivered. I wish Amazon had used the royal mail as they would have just shoved it in the recycling bin like they usually do.

OMG, I love this book already and I just read the Introduction and Prologue! Is the "Neil" in the dedication Neil Aspinall? Also love the pics--many of which have not been seen before! Especially liked the one of John on the street in Hamburg, reading the Daily Express, wearing only his cap, socks, shoes and Y-fronts!

I'm more than half through it, and so far, no major new things, really. Little tidbits of things, but no biggies for most of us who have devoured every little thing ever written about the Beatles! One thing that annoys me a bit, is when he describes a photo, but it isn't included in the book! I want to see it! (Don't want to spoil it, but be ready for what is said about Paul in Hamburg, by Stu.)

My unabridged copy (or should I say copies as its actually two books) arrived this morning. I'm not the quickest of readers so I've no idea how long its going to take me to read it. Probably until the New Year I reckon.
-
It's taking me longer to get through because I read all of the footnotes (which are fantastic!) This book is incredibly detailed--no wonder it took him so long to get it out--the research he had to do was mind-blowing!

I do the same thing! I make sure to read all the notes in the back of the book as I read each chapter; they are very informative! I'm trying to make reading it last as long as possible, but I'm still going through it too fast!

The extended edition now costs £120 at Amazon UK.

I better get on it harassing the publisher to get it mass marketed to the US.
