Anything involved with Uri Geller is bound to be a tad dubious, to put it mildly. All that fork-bending stuff can be done with hot hands and really cheap utensils. After all the drugs and drink John had put into himself by that stage, perhaps it's not surprising he had visions of aliens.

RE: How Paul McCartney proved Wings haters wrong with "Band on the Run"
Wings were literally a band on the run for a while. Funny how great music often comes out of bad circumstances. Paul was at his absolute peak musically and vocally at that time, which is why I'm glad I saw him live then, and not more recently. In my opinion his music has been in steady decline for some time, as has his voice. But that doesn't matter - he long ago stopped having to prove anything to anyone. The best of his music is incredible. I listen to each new album hoping for one more great record - the last two albums unfortunately went in one ear and out of the other - but he's done more great stuff than most musicians, so his reputation is rock solid.

RE: Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and The Beatles Have Always Been “Woke.” You Just Weren’t Paying Attention.
Can someone tell me what 'woke' is ? I didn't get the email.

Play it yourself Beatles songs
I've taught myself piano over the last six years, and naturally I play a lot of Beatles songs (among hundreds of others). Some songs are very complex, some straightforward. When you start to play songs you already know (or think you know), you gain a new respect for the art, craft and inspiration of the popular song. I found this was particularly true when approaching the Great American Songbook of the 1920s to the 1950s, but also with Beatles songs. George Martin's musical influence is more apparent on the later songs - they learned so much from him. I love playing Something, And I love her, Julia, Things we said today, Here there and everywhere, You like me too much and In my life particularly - they're so beautifully constructed.

RE: RIP...for all that have passed
Bonnie Pointer, of the Pointer Sisters, has died aged 69 of cardiac arrest. I remember buying one of their earlier singles Yes we can can, which was very different to a lot of pop music at the time. They were very versatile, Bonnie left the group in 1977 and they made some good records without her - I remember particularly a great cover of Fire, by Bruce Springsteen.

RE: The Beatles song John Lennon said he could’ve sung better than Paul McCartney
Some years later Paul did a similar thing with Let me roll it. Very John.

RE: Celebrity Birthdays
Quite appropriate that Sir Tom had a hit with Kiss, by Prince !

RE: The Lovely Linda (song)
It would have been nice if this fragment had been developed into a full song.

RE: Let It Be / Get Back (the movie)
It would be great if we can actually go to a cinema by then - I have to say at the moment I'm not over-confident ! If Ringo likes it, that's promising

RE: Ringo’s drumming
Ringo was always modest about his drumming (he once said "I can't tune a drum to save my life"). However despite that, he found ways to make memorable performances. I watched a little masterclass he did, which is on YouTube, where he explained that he's left handed but plays in a right handed way, which is why it sometimes looks a bit awkward. I think his work on Abbey Road is brilliant.

RE: Celebrity Birthdays
Sir Tom Jones 80 tomorrow, believe it or not. BBC TV had an evening of programmes devoted to him last night.

RE: Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool
I stayed there during the 1986 Beatles Convention - I used to love the conventions, my first was in 1976 in Norwich where among the people I met was Richard Buskin who now lives in Chicago, is a successful writer and still very much a Beatleologist with a great podcast (Beatles Naked). Also met Cavern DJ Bob Wooler and early Beatles manager Allan Williams.

RE: RIP...for all that have passed
Steve Priest, bass player with glam rock band the Sweet has died at 72. The Sweet were big stars in the 70s in the UK with 13 top twenty hits and one number one. Glam rock was huge, with David Bowie, T.Rex, Mud and Slade among the most successful artistes, with outrageous clothes, make-up etc. The Sweet later moved into hard rock, Steve Priest has lived in the US for many years.

RE: Iconic Abbey Road Recording Studios Reopens After Pandemic Shutdown
My original musical heroes (and they still are my musical heroes) Cliff Richard and the Shadows made all their records at Abbey Road from 1958, a full four years before the Beatles did. Cliff has told the tale of how, in the late 60s, he would try and book their regular studio at Abbey Road only to be told that the Beatles had booked it. Apparently Paul said that the Beatles would often try to book that same studio only to be told that Cliff and the Shadows were in there !!

RE: Song Of The Day
Rainbow Chaser by Nirvana (the 60s band). Another psychedelic gem which should be on YouTube.

RE: Celebrity Birthdays
Suzi Quatro 70 today. She used to do lots of shows for BBC Radio 2, mainly music from the late 50s and early 60s (plenty of Elvis). She's a natural for radio, sounds like she's talking just to you.

RE: The Beatles Mentioned on TV
Watching the film That'll be the day at the moment, from 1973. It contains the best acting ever from any Beatle. Sir Ringo is so believable, recreating part of his pre-Beatle life as a holiday camp attendant.

Paul’s obscure items
One unusual bit of McCartney music I often recall is from 1974 when a new radio station opened in my home city of Manchester, England. It was called Piccadilly Radio and the evening show was presented by Andy Peebles, famously the last person to interview John Lennon. Paul composed a jingle for the station - the lyric was: Hello Piccadilly, hello Albert Square, hello Piccadilly, keep doing it on the air ! Sadly no recording exists that I know of. What other oddities do people know of from the dustier corners of Paul's collection ?
