Great blog Tony, so true about Paul, and especially regarding him as an accompaniest. he's so skilled and his sound is so polished in the studio, he gives anything he plays on that pro polish. I remember reading something where Lennon had joked to Harry Nilsson when the PussyCats sessions wrapped, ribbing him a bit, saying that the only thing that would make the record sound better was if Paul sang on it

RE: "Underappreciated Genius."
I literally don't like Drive My Car anymore.. after seeing it on the tape of every live performance he's done since like 1995. Needs to give that one a rest.. Play all new stuff and Wings. I'd honestly rather hear the Beatles stuff just listening to my records. okay, anything he wants to play off Pepper, MMT or White album would be fine

great Flash Harry pic, thats awesome. I don't have that album but have heard some, his version of Old Dirt Road is cool. just cool to hear him do it.
I saw this too, Harry with a far out take on Blackbird. that guy was so creative. did you ever notice the similarity of the music from Turn On Your Radio and Blackbird? Blackbird Turn On Your Radio anyway -

RE: the Nilsson thread
I seriously have a new favorite song! Nilsson does a version of the Moore/Abner song At My Front Door (Crazy Little Mama), on his Son of Schmilsson album. I just got this on vinyl and been wearing it out, the energy is amazing. Ringo (Richie Snare) drums on it, and you got the works: Klaus on Bass, Nicky Hopkins on Piano, Peter Framption on Guitar, Bobby Keys on Sax. It's the most rocking track on earth, I'm convinced! Rich Perry got it right! for the life of me I cannot find Harry's verison anywhere online.. so sad! if anyone can help me out there. otherwise I'll just keep playing the record here's the old school El Dorado version to wet the whistle
Most rockin track on earth heard it here first btw there's a great pic on the rear cover of Nilsson wearing the Schmilsson robe over a tuxedo, underneath his dracula cape.. smokng a pipe. cant find that pic online either or I'd post. but fantastic stuff. -

don't know if it's been mentioned already but the song The Way by Fastball always sounded a little Beatley to me.
And About A Girl By Nirvana for sure. Kurt admitted to trying to write a Beatles song with that one. He did a great jobI really don't agree with either of those songs being "Beatley". I remember liking Fastball's "The Way" when it was released... until I realised that it was a complete rip-off of Tom Jones' "Delilah"! As for "About A Girl", Kurt may have been a big Beatles fan, but his style and usage of chords on that song were not, in any way, reminiscent of The Beatles. It's a fantastic track, though, one of my favourites.
point taken something about About a Girl sounds early Beatle to me. thinking about chord structure, sort of reminiscent of I Should Have Known Better? I don't know why I chose The Way.. perhaps its sounds more like it could have been a McCartney tune now that I think about it. and the way the guitar solo is played or whatnot. thinking back to Nirvana, I was listening to McCartney's Driving Rain and heard House of Wax, and found certian parts really reminiscent musically (not in terms of production) of Nirvana's Something In The Way. It's eerily similar in the House of Wax line underneath the wall and the underneath the bridge bit from Something In The Way.

RE: Flowers In The Dirt a real masterpiece
definitely a great album, probably my favorite Macca album of the 80's. I like the collection of songs a lot, not really one that I can't listen to. a good mix of simple/complicated, slow/uptempo. though somewhat absent is the full on rocker.. Figure of Eight is a fav of mine, I think its a really strong lyric and the song is just so full and beautiful, has a life of its own and whatnot.. and the B-side Flying to My Home is my fav of the entire lot, that should have been the rocker on the album. And Paul's voice still sounds good on the record. I read in some other threads folks debating the deterioration of Paul's voice.. I agree with some that at this point in time Paul does not have the same silky smooth voice he once had. how could he, his vocal chords are as old as he is now. but I think on Flowers he could still pretty much do what ever he wanted vocally. and it allowed him to pull off those sweet melodies he heard in his head.

RE: the Power of Krishna
I had a funny conversation with a friend of my wife, she was telling me that she meditates.. said it helps her sort of calm down and reset and recharge at least once a day. I said, recharge? have you ever heard of just taking a nap? (at which point I cracked up, not sure if she laughed).. but she said it was kind of like sleeping, but the beauty is you can rest and yet remain awake and in an anware state.. and blah blah blah.. she's kind of full it if you ask me.. but it does beg the question: does meditation reduce the amount of sleep one would need on a daily basis? cause that would be cool, stay awake for more of your life. I mean hey, your sitting still with your eyes close.. whats the difference? I wonder how often people fall asleep while meditating? seems like a fine line, the one between someone who's perfected the art of achieving a really deep state of transcendental meditation, or someone taking a nap

thats a great pic! rock stars having a ball. Moon seems to have that expression on his face in a lot of the picturs I see, just rip roarin! I love their version of Only You. one of my fav all time tracks from Ringo. do you know the identity of the other two guys in the shot? I wonder if that pic was taken at the pre-party to the Only You video shoot? because Harry and Ringo look like they just might have been lit up in that video

the Power of Krishna
check this out.. this ones an interview with George from 1982. He recounts the following: Mukunda: Can you think of any incident where you felt God?s presence very strongly through chanting? George: Once I was on an airplane that was in an electric storm. It was hit by lightning three times, and a Boeing 707 went over the top of us, missing by inches. I thought the back end of the plane had blown off. I was on my way from Los Angeles to New York to organize the Bangladesh concert. As soon as the plane began bouncing around, I started chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. The whole thing went on for about an hour and a half or two hours, the plane dropping hundreds of feet and bouncing all over in the storm, all the lights out and all these explosions, and everybody terrified. I ended up with my feet pressed against the seat in front, my seat belt as tight as it could be, gripping on the thing, and yelling Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare at the top of my voice. I know for me, the difference between making it and not making it was actually chanting the mantra. Peter Sellers also swore that chanting Hare* Krishna saved him from a plane crash once. Mukunda: Did any of the other Beatles chant? George: Before meeting Prabhupada and all of you, I had bought that album Prabhupada did in New York .(SIDE A / SIDE B) , and John and I listened to it. I remember we sang it for days, John and I, with ukulele banjos, sailing through the Greek Islands chanting Hare Krishna. Like six hours we sang, because we couldn?t stop once we got going. As soon as we stopped, it was like the lights went out. It went on to the point where our jaws were aching, singing the mantra over and over and over and over and over. We felt exalted; it was a very happy time for us. http://krishna.org/george-harrison-interview-hare-krishna-mantra-theres-nothing-higher-1982/ whutchyall think about that? I might have to start trying that. the sailing around the Greek Islands part.

RE: the Nilsson thread
nice SillyLoveSongs! awesome pic, and amazing that you have his business card! that would be one of my most prized posessions. so cool you rubbed shoulders with such a character. so did he just give it to you so you had his phone number, in case you ever felt like calling him up to hang out (or make a movie)? there were some crazy goings on during his waning years. was it ever release how much money his personal assistant stole from him? I heard this person never disclosed the location of the money. what does that even mean, did she have it all in cash somewhere?! I would have thought the ycould track down a bank account. anyone have any details on the hiest or resolution? so did that pretty much bankrupt Hawkeye? I remember hearing about a movie he produced and co-wrote called the Telephone, with Whoopie Goldberg. I just cant bring myself to actually watch it

RE: the Nilsson thread
here's a blurb I just found at this site http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/harry_nilsson/biography.php After the relative failure of his latest two albums, RCA Records considered dropping Nilsson's contract. In a show of friendship, Lennon accompanied Nilsson to negotiations, and both intimated to RCA that Lennon and Starr might want to sign with them, once their Apple Records contracts with EMI expired in 1975, but wouldn't be interested if Nilsson were no longer with the label. RCA took the hint and re-signed Nilsson (adding a completion bonus clause, to apply to each new album), but neither Lennon nor Starr switched to RCA. Lennon throwing his weight around ..on another note, while I was surfing the web I happened upon this site http://fortheloveofharry.blogspot.com/ ..could be older news, not sure.. but man would I love to hear those tapes. anyone heard them? the sites not that great so here's the blurb of interest: Two reel to reel tapes of John Lennon and Harry Nilsson jamming on the oldies during the Pussy Cats sessions are currently up for auction at Bonhams in June. The auction house estimates the value of the tapes at $40,000-45,000 (...guess they're not used to hearing Lennon's live jams). The tapes feature Lennon on guitar & vocals, Nilsson on drums & vocals and Simon & Garfunkel, all rehearsing at the Record Plant in NYC for approximately 95 minutes. According to a source who has heard some of the tapes, Nilsson is heard saying "goodbye Paul" and "stick around Artie" at one point. The source goes on to say that both Lennon & Nilsson "have had too much to drink." Also confirmed is that the tapes are not the god-awful Toot And A Snore session tapes featuring Lennon, Paul McCartney, Nilsson and Stevie Wonder.

RE: the Nilsson thread
I definitely agree he was phenomonal, and I'd have to say I agree about PussyCats. It's amazing that record got released at all, with how bad Harry's voice sounded. the main reason you listen to Harry is for the vocals, and that was just taken out of the picture completely. I read a quote from Elton John who claimed to have dropped by the PC sessions and watched as Harry sang and spit blood due to hemoraging from coke intake. damn bro.. the Toot n a Snore recording is just an extension of that whole thing, shows you where John was with that as well. But in the end, what I like, is what you're left with is sort of a birdseye view of Harry and John's taste in music at the time, great musicians (Moon, Ringo, Klaus) and some oddball production from JL. Lennon doing Nilsson a solid at that point in his career. I mean did Lennon ever produce anyone other than himself, the Beatles and Nilsson? I don't have the link but I read about how John and Ringo talked RCA into renewing Harry's contract, I think in 1974? good dudes those ex-Beatles! I'll try to find that link, would fit nicely here...
