Thank you Eve I remember being in a bar in Holland in 1991 (two years after Poland shook off the communist chains) and talking to a friendly fella. I told him Poland would soon join EEC, and then he gave me a strange look. Well 'soon' was some mere 13-year-wait, but we've made it! btw, what's Flammish and Dutch for 'thank you'? (I hope it's something I can say at last )

It's the same in Flemish and Dutch : Dank je wel !

Dank je wel! = Dziękuję! Evelien, which is your mother tongue: French, Flemish or Dutch?

So Flemish is more similar to Dutch than French? I once had some Dutch students at my school, and I remember their saying Dutch was so similar to German that that could watch and understand German TV How about Flemish?

Flemish is practically the same as Dutch, sometimes there are a few words that the people from The Netherlands use, but we in Flanders don't, and vice versa, but we can understand each other perfectly! There's a subtle difference in the pronounciation between Flemish and Dutch though...;) French is a TOTALLY different language then Flemish or Dutch. As Belgium has 3 official languages (Flemish, French and German) we had to learn French as our second language in high school. I can understand it perfectly, but speaking and writing it is another matter : ops: German is indeed similar to Dutch/Flemish. I had to read a German book for the paper I had to finish for school and it was understandable. But I can't speak German myself though ops:

Yes, I know what you mean. Slavic languages are similar to one another too. There are three main groups: 1. The west Slavic languages: POLISH, CZECH and SLOVAK 2. The east Slavic languages: RUSSIAN, UKRAINEAN, and BELARUSSIAN 3. The south Slavic languages: SERBIAN-CHROATIAN, SLOVENIAN, and BULGARIAN An average Pole understands 80% of Czech and Slovakian, and 60% Russian; but until 1989 Russian was an obligatory school subject in Polish schools, so people like me understand more than mere 60% of Russian; well maybe 70% ops: (it was a nation-wide practice to boycott the Russian lessons, so very few really learnt it ) The south Slavic languages are notably more different

Hello, you two! Well, I can't speak Dutch/Flemish, even though our languages are so similar, and I know a number of more distant ones (even a bit of Polish now - dziękuję Paweł! ). When I go to your "Nederlands Macca Draadje", I can read and understand most of what is said (just like you, Evelien, with that German book!), but, except for just a few words, I can't express myself in that language! ops:
-
Evelien, Christoph I see you can understand written texts in your languages; but what about listening comprehension? Do Flemish/Dutch and German sound similar for your ears? (of course it's always easier to understand written texts, but can you understand each other's languages when spoken at all?)
-
It does sound similar, but as always, there are also the famous false friends - words that sound similar in both languages, but mean something completely different! I was able to follow TV and radio broadcasts in Dutch - mainly news, but they are spoken in a very accentuated way. I highly doubt whether I can understand much of Dutch when spoken rather fast! But I think that's always the case - someone who speaks rather fast isn't as easily understood as someone who speaks more slowly.

I can understand German, yes. The other day I watched the movie "Paul Is Dead" on a German channel, and I could understand most of it. But sometimes it's like Christophe said, some words sound similar, but have a totally different meaning!

True again! I've been to Germany on holiday for a few times, and if someone speaks very fast, I can hardly understand it ops: ops:

My ten-year old pupil Ola is going on a school trip to Holland this Wednesday. She'll be staying with a Dutch family. My work as an English teacher will be put to a test

Organizacja świetna a atmosfera wręcz niewiarygodna.

No cóż, chyba rzeczywiście masz rację.
