Wow, that's great news Kapoo. Looks a great find! Here's the link for the Lew Grade performance of Imagine by the way:
-
Why in the world would John appear in a Tribute for Lew Grade? Didnt he screw the Beatles out of their publishing rights in 1969 by buying (with ATV/Sony) the L/M publishing rights on their songs??

I've heard it said that the masks that Lennon's band was wearing on the backs of their heads was Lennon's sly way of calling Lew Grade two-faced.

The MSG tracks can be found on the "Lennon" boxset as well. Here's a link to that CD boxset: http://www.jpgr.co.uk/cds7952202.html

I think the appearance by Jphn for the Lew Grade event was to settle some kind of legal issue regarding the Lennon/McCartney songs. I believe the James Paul McCartney special of 1973 was staged to take care of Paul's obligation to Grade.

Did John Lennon like Elton? I think so, because he said a lot of positive things about him. He said: "Elton's version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is better than the version I did with The Beatles." It's very sad he died in 1980, so he never heard Elton's later work.

btw I bought that vinyl I mentioned, sounds better than I expected, loving it. I hadn't noticed based on listening on YouTube, but in two spots John teases the opening riff to I Feel Fine. Once as he's coming onstage right before they do Whatever Gets You Through The Night.. and then once during I Saw Her Standing There. When he slips it in ISHST it's really cool and fits perfectly! he does it juts after the 'way beyond compare'... listen for it, its pretty sweet

This was the night that Yoko an John were reunited after the 'lost weekend' which deemed Elton as godfather of Sean. So yes John did very much favor Elton also calling him the first new thing he has heard in the 70's. "Empty Garden" was written with much of this night in mind, which Elton will usually only sing during his MSG concerts.

That show must have rocked. possibly

Did John also sing on Elton's stuido single version of Lucy -
It says he played guitar on the track, but definitely sounds like him singing on the chorus too. -

It says he played guitar on the track, but definitely sounds like him singing on the chorus too.It does include background vocals from Lennon, I heard it wasn?t credited but Elton John later verified as much.. as well as his guitar. Thanks for posting that link Bday, been a while since I?d heard it. Check out the credits printed on the vinyl single pic below. Does that say ?Elton John featuring the Reggae guitars of Dr. Winston O?Boogie?? Nice some of the various single sleeves I saw? The single actually went #1 for Elton, and the B-side is another John tune from Mind Games, One Day (At A Time) . here's Elton's version
Cool song, John sings backing on that one also Denmark UK Yugoslavia Germany USA Japan -
Thanks Kapoo. I didn't know Elton and John had recorded "One Day At A Time" together, so hadn't heard that version. Nice. John's vocal isn't as clear as on Lucy though. Here's another John & Elton collaboration: John Lennon & Elton John - Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox) -
from Walls & Bridges. (Just noticed the bit at the end sounds like the "beep-beep-yeah" from the end of Drive My Car! ) -

I hear this one. Thanks for pointing that out. I couldn't place which Beatle song it was, and it use to drive me crazy. But....

I can't for the life of me hear this one. I can hear a few notes from a guitar solo, but it doesn't sound like I Feel Fine to me. This is coming in around 40 to 49 sec into the track. Is this where it is roughly?
-
I love that song Surprise, Surprise.. just an awesome tune. Sweet! Sweet!.. Sweet! Sweet!.. Bird! that's a total nod to Drive My Car and to Paul, good call. John's done that a few times in his solo songs.. I have to think of them, some are really subtle... on Mind Games in I Know its basically the rythm from I've Got A Feeling.. and I think there's a lick in the song New York City that sounds like Back in the USSR.. need to listen again.. dcshark, at this clip I'm hearing I Feel Fine at about the 57-58 sec mark. am I right on that? it almost blends so well you wouldn't even notice it.. unless you're a complete Beatles nerd.. like us
-
I hadn't noticed the similarity in rythmn between Mind Games and I've Got A Feeling, but you're right, there is a similar feel.
-
Hey Birthday, just to clarify, I was refering to the song 'I Know (I Know)' off the Mind Games album.., you'll notice the similarity in the rhythm real quick on that one.. have a listen:
-
Sorry Kapoo. Just a typo on my part, I meant "I Know" It's late here and the song is on the Mind Games album - that's my excuse! You're right that guitar riff at the beginning is pure I've Got A Feeling. I've always loved this song. Mind Games as an album can be a bit insipid as a whole, but there's a few songs like this one that really stand out for me.

I wouldn't say the rhythm of the whole song for "I Know (I Know) is like" I've Got a Feeling" but he throws in a very similar riff in the intro and in other parts of the song. That's a great song too, a lot of people forget about that one when discussing the public John-Paul feud of the early 70's. In addition to the couple you mentioned, John's "Going Down On Love" has a nod to "Help" in it as well.
