The Official U2 Thread!

yeah I agree it's definitely raised the bar for arena shows. I think the Stones would be really well served on a stage like that. Mick and Keith able to get around the stage, etc. that Spaceship comment reminds me of a part of the show I was at.. Bono says to he crowd, 'everyone take out your cell phones, lets turn this place into the freaking Milky Way!!' This was so far out looking, and I found a clip of it on YouTube (though it ain't that great)... but that stadium totally felt like the Milky Way, a blanket of lights swirling around all over the place..so sweet cause every damn person in that place had a cell phone !
I remember thinking the whole bit might have been a plug as I believe the main sponsor of the show might have been cell phone company?.. cool as hell though. -
Anyone in here who went to see them during their European leg lately? I saw them last year in Amsterdam, gonna see them again next week in Brussels and I'm wondering if there are any major setlist changes.
-
A year later and no new posts? Well... I just saw U2 last night at Anaheim Stadium and they were in TOP FORM! They rocked the full house! The Claw was just mind-blowing and the crowd was GREAT. It was my first U2 concert and it was just FAN-tastic! Anyone else seen U2 2011!
-
^ Great to learn that your first U2 concert was fantastic!!! We will be seeing U2 twice next month - cannot wait!!!

That bit of the show goes back to previous tours ( I recall doing that for them in 2005 during the vertigo tour) prior to their phone sponsorship. It's just a modern version of flicking cigarette lighters - much safer, and healthier, too. They used to plug their own One Campaign by featuring a text number to contact during the show - at one time they even had a cell-phone relay mast built into their stage to assist local mobile phone networks cope with the volume traffic that part generated. After all the debacle of the Spider-Man pre-launch bad press, accidents to performers etc. nice to read that the show has opened at last. The soundtrack album is now available:
Bono and Edge were in New York a few days ago for the Broadway opening of 'SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark'. The SPIDER-MAN soundtrack album, produced by Steve Lillywhite, is now available to download. DOWNLOAD 'SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark' (US) DOWNLOAD 'SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark' (UK) best wishes, The U2.com Team.
Got my copy and listened a few times, the soundtrack album has Bono and The Edge as guest artists although, of course, they do not appear in the show itself. The main vocals are the stage show cast, and the songs have a U2 feel albeit, scripted for a stage musical, comes across different to other U2 material. Although it has taken such flak I do hope it has a reasonable run, as a U2 fan I do wish Bono & Co well, they've given me so much I'd like them to enjoy a commercial success if not critical acclaim. Yes, I was able to watch it here in the UK on TV. They didn't attempt to bring their 360 Tour show to Glastonbury, but rather put on a Greatest Tour Hits hits spanning their previous stage shows, including old stage video backdrops from earlier tours such as ZooTV, PopMart Elevation etc Incredible package. Main Set: Even Better Than The Real Thing, The Fly,
Mysterious Ways - Independent Women, Until the End of the World, One, Jerusalem - Where the Streets Have No Name - All You Need Is Love, I Will Follow, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Movin' On Up, Stay, Beautiful Day - Rain, Elevation, Get On Your Boots, She Loves You - Vertigo - Garageland, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bad - Jerusalem, Pride Encore(s): With or Without You - Love Will Tear Us Apart, Yellow - Moment of Surrender, Out of Control Martin -
I hope they keep The Fly in for Philly!

I'm fully in admiration for the design of their current stage - The Claw" and appreciate many thousands more fans have been able to watch their show as a result of the "in the round" staging - myself included. But it was nice to have the return of the intimacy of a conventional stage - the band seemed more intimate and together as a result of that - no need to spread themselves thinly round the Claw Stage for everyone to get a bit of them. It was a very special show for a very special festival, one for the archives indeed. Martin

It's being talked about already as one of the greatest U2 performances ever!

Do you think Zoo TV was one of the most creative tours ever? I think it was one of the coolest and most creative idea for a tour. The whole thing like you're watching tv, commercials, the prank calls with Mr. MacPhisto. Wish I was born so I could have seen it. And if you don't think it was one of the best tours, what do you think was?
-
I saw the show on it's second round, The Zooropa leg, when they introduced the Zooropa album written between legs, when it had lost some of it's flying Trabants but it was still the most incredible experience I have ever seen on stage. The band was at their most extreme by way of spectacle for this show. The next tour Pop had the megawide screen for it's design spectacle and then the next Elevation abandoned all that to go back to simple basics. The 360 tour has the amazing Claw stage at the heart of the show with the mobile extending circular Tv screen which does wonders. But still for originality and innovation ZooTV still hold the edge. I saw the show at Wembley Stadium and that night's McPhisto moment was when Bono seemingly made a mocking call to Salman Rushdie, who was in hiding, receiving armed police protection, from a fatwā requiring his death by any available Muslim issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, after his book The Satanic Verses offended Muslim feelings. McPhisto's call was answered by Salman Rushdie to be mocked for "not getting out much these days" to the amusement of the audience - and then to the amazement of the audience Salman Rushdie stepped out on stage carrying his own mobile phone and Bono stepped out of his McPhisto character to welcome and laud him for his bravery. That was one of the best McPhisto moments of the entire tour. The highlight of the show for me was the eruption of Bullet the Blue Sky onto the stage after the quietness of the "pseudo-live" moment of Bono's duet with Lou Reed on Satellite Of Love:
The graphics for BTBS has the surreal, seemingly dark, moment as the Christian cross tranforms into a swastika. However many overlook that the swastika has a 3000 year old tradition as a religeous symbol of many cultures including Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism as a good luck symbol and I feel that U2 were obliquely referencing the good/evil conflict the hijacking of the symbol by The Nazi movement has brought. Quick question about the upcoming releases of Achtung Baby. I love the album but I don't want to shell out for the super deluxe. I saw there was a 2 CD version with b-sides and rarities. Any idea what the tracklist for the second disc is? And is it remastered? So much music to buy. It's making my head spin.
