Paul's most powerful lyrics thread
-
Hello everyone! The purpose of this thread is to post the lyrics of some of Paul's songs that you feel are among his "most powerful" throughout his career as a songwriter. Keep in mind that this is not a "Paul's best songs" thread, which would go on in circles endlessly as we will all undoubtedly have differing views here, but rather a place for you to pick out certain lyrics that really stood out to you and left an impact. In terms of "most powerful," lets try to keep it in terms of either poetic or emotional value/impact...

Well I feel one of the most powerful lyrics has to start with ... "And in the End, the Love you Take, is equal to the Love you Make" just brilliant

Good choice!

"May we never be called to handle all the weapons of war we despise" I love all the lyrics on My Brave Face but in particular "Ever since you went away, I've had this sentimental inclination not to change a single thing" "As I pull the sheet back on the bed, I wanna go bury my head in your pillow" "As I threw away another untouched TV dinner from the table I laid for two" Conjures up great imagery IMO

The Pie version is incredible, as much as I love the live versions it is a special moment when you hear the studio version Little Willow is powerful too "life as it happens, nobody warns you, willow hold on tight"

"Calico Skies" is one of my favorite Paul songs, and the best part is that the live version is so different from the album version, as that means this one song becomes TWO of my favorite songs. "Little Willow" is another powerful song. God, the entire Flaming Pie album is amazing!

I think "Somedays," "Here Today," and "The End of the End" are amazing specimens of emotionally-rich songs (and some of my personal favorites). In terms of poetic value, for some reason "House of Wax" strikes me as a very poetic song, especially when you read the lyrics on their own... "Lightning hits the House of Wax Poets spill out on the street To set alight the incomplete remainders of the future... Hidden in the yard, Hidden in the yard... Thunder drowns the trumpet's blast Poets scatter through the night But they can only dream of flight Away from their confusion Hidden in the yard..." And, of course, they are all great songs musically as well.

Somedays I look I look at you with eyes that shine Somedays I don't I don't believe that you are mine It's no good asking me what time of day it is Who won the match or scored the goal Somedays I look Somedays I look into your soul Sometimes I laugh I laugh to think how young we were Sometimes it's hard It's hard to know which way to turn Don't ask me where I found that picture on the wall How much it cost or what it's worth Sometimes I laugh I laugh to think how young we were We don't need anybody else to tell us what is real Inside each one of us is love And we know how it feels Somedays I cry I cry for those who live in fear Somedays I don't I don't remember why I'm here No use reminding me, it's just the way it is Who ran the race or came in first Somedays I cry I cry for those who fear the worst We don't need anybody else to tell us what is real Inside each one of us is love And we know how it feels Somedays I look I look at you with eyes that shine Somedays I don't I don't believe that you are mine It's no good asking me what time of day it is Who won the match or scored the goal Somedays I look Somedays I look into your soul For me this is one of more wise lyrics Paul has wrote...and is not casuality that are in the same album...

I mean the same album of Calico sky

We've all heard this so many times that perhaps we're a little too used to it, but these lines always give me shivers And if I say I really loved you and was glad you came along Then you were here today For you were in my song

I think Tug Of War has some of Paul's best post Beatle lyrics, but the few lines below have a really emotional kick to them. In years to come we may discover What the air we breathe and the life we lead are all about But it wont be soon enough Soon enough for me.

I'd agree one of his very finest and better than anything the other fabs penned as a solo artist.

The End of the End took my breath away and made me stop what I was doing to listen to it the first time I heard it. "On the day that I die I'd like bells to be rung And songs to be sung..." and then how he talked in one verse about blankets that lovers had lain on and in another verse about blankets that children have played on.

Favorite Paul lyric: "With the wind in your hair of a thousand places Climb on my back and we'll go for a ride in the sky..."
-
IS IT BETTER TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER THAN TO GO FOR A WALK IN THE DARK? IS IT BETTER TO LOVE THAN TO GIVE IN TO HATE? YEAH, WE'D BETTER TAKE GOOD CARE OF EACH OTHER, AVOID SLIPPING BACK OFF THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW, IT'S BETTER BY FAR THAN GETTING STUCK IN A FIGURE OF EIGHT.
