Paul McCartney 2013 Rumours

Oh dear God please let it happen And I don't give a flyin' fig what he sings, just wanna hear and see him in person again I reviewed his concert I saw in the Charlotte N.C. concert thread somewhere in the back pages here, btw. My review was really over the top, made it sound like I was witnessing The Rapture (LOL) or that I'd seen the Golden Age begin right then. I truly got carried away writing about it. I loved employing hyperbole in service of such a super star performer--not that it was always hyperbole, the praise I felt was truly deserved no matter how florid and fawning the prose used

I kinda thought that he'd start to slow down more in 2013. But who knows. I guess we shall see.

With the exception of Memory ALmost Full, he's done a rather spectacular job of promoting his new albums. Albeit, he only does it for a limited time...but it does happen!

The organization of the biggest festival over here, Pinkpop (14-16 June 2013), announced some new names today. Much more interesting, they also mentioned that negotiations to get Paul McCartney to the festival were at an advanced stage, but they lost the negotiation war to an American festival in the same weekend. So... 1+1=2. Is Bonnaroo (13-16 June 2013) finally getting their long-awaited McCartney set?
Hey guys, new poster here Pleased to meet you all. Just FYI, you have the good people of inforoo.com (the Bonnaroo message boards) all in a tizzy over this post/article. Needless to say, everybody is unbelievably excited about the possibility of getting Sir Paul to headline on the farm in 2013. Question for you, though, nobodytoldme: How do you know they "lost a negotiation war to an American festival in the same weekend?" The article, when translated, has the Pinkpop promoter stating that American festivals seem more important to Paul, but do you have other information that leads you to believe Paul has been booked for another American festival that weekend? Just trying to figure out how excited I (and all of my Bonnaroo friends) should get for the possibility of getting Paul on the farm. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, karosko. I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps it was a report on a local radio station.

Hi and welcome. And welcome to the world of Paul McCartney speculation. We have a golden rule here, do not believe any rumour until official announcements. We have that golden rule because Paul's fans will book flights, hotels, buy festival tickets before the line-up is announced to be ahead of the game on the slightest of hints. As to any chatter about promoters in talks/advanced talks..... Every major concert promoter and festival promoter is always beating the door to Paul's team - and conversations do take place, even to the degree of having site visits and detailed conversations about the logistics and economics of an appearance. Sadly promoters know that leaking such is happening generates invaluable publicity for their event. However which events, if any, make the final cut will not be known until an official announcement is made of Paul's intentions for this year. He did a season of festivals quite recently - it doesn't necessarily mean he will again this year. I googled McCartney and Bonnaroo and it seems speculation that Paul might appear arises with annual regularity. But that's the same for almost every major festival The main site news and blog pages and the main site home page will be the first indications of Paul's intentions this year: http://www.paulmccartney.com/ http://www.paulmccartney.com/news-blogs All we can do is keep a close watch.... Martin

Thanks for the warm welcome, Martin and veggieburgher! I'm not looking for a confirmation necessarily, just wondering if there is buzz that Paul has a festival date booked the same weekend as Pinkpop. Because, if so, there's really no other festival it could be than Bonnaroo. Just trying to get a feel for what the rumor mill is churning out regarding Paul's chances of playing some American festivals this summer, or if, as you suggested Martin, the promoter of Pinkpop is simply trying to create some publicity for his festival.

Hello, welcome, wow, insane how quick those messages spread . And, hi people from the Inforoo board, let me try to put this rumour into perspective. The organization of the iconic Dutch Pinkpop festival has an unorthodox way of announcing their headliners. The 'face' of the festival is festival director and founder Jan Smeets. Not even many of the Dutch people know this, but he isn't calling the shots any more for years and years. Just the sock puppet of the big corporate concert festival promoters. Anyway, he is always 'leaking' names for the festival early through the (surprise, surprise) cooperating media outlets. Plus he is dropping hints about big acts from time to time in the months before the announcements. Of course, they don't always come true. In the case of Paul McCartney he was of course dropping some names to show how big the acts the festival could have had are. In the end his list of acts he name-dropped on the road to the big announcements are way more impressive than their actual line-up. Neil Young is a big wish of him, that may come true this year, last September he announced they pinned down "a major older name". But him mentioning Paul McCartney was completely new. I reported the content of his new statements from a Dutch news article in my post earlier in this thread. (I only joined the dots based on the every year recurring rumours about McCartney performing Bonnaroo.) I haven't heard his exact words, or even if "the same weekend" was mentioned at all. Can you sum up the festivals McCartney did in his career? Glastonbury 2004 and Coachella 2009. Both quite a big deal! And the Isle Of Wight, also not the most minor name. That was in 2010 for a short set, when he was in the country anyway for a few gigs in the same week. But that's it. So what's the chance of him even considering going down to Landgraaf for the Pinkpop Festival?! So of course, my first reaction was calling BS on Smeets' proclamations. But, there are plenty examples of him speaking out of turn and more or less conforming tour schemes for big names while the official announcements are months away. And they have had major budget-exhausting acts, 2 million dollar acts, in the most recent years, for example Springsteen, Coldplay, Metallica, Muse, The Cure, Kings Of Leon, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers. As you can see a really generic and safe line-up, but that's another story. (Btw, funny how unfamiliar some of you guys seem to appear with the Pinkpop festival. Loved the 'Eurofest' remark, haha! Ironically made by someone with a .GIF-signature with Eddie Vedder at... you'd guessed it, Pinkpop! Legendary festival, look it up). A good translation of one of the plenty articles on the subject (him announcing QOTSA and mentioning McCartney) doesn't mean a thing. It says nothing, since it's not the original source, it could be as coloured as a Google Translation. So I'm going to check right now what got lost in 'translation' after the original radio interview, and get to the bottom of the source to see for myself what his exact words were. If he even mentioned "festivals". Or "the same weekend". Would make quite a difference regarding Bonnaroo. Still, true or not, which other American festival around the same time would have the size, budget - not to mention the history of trying to get him - for McCartney? Bottom line: anticipation for the coming months .

Ok, here we go: the radio DJ is asking Smeets about the "major old name" he mentioned in September. (See previous post). He acknowledges this, but immediately says that one is off the table. The DJ (presenter and insider of the festival, and undoubtedly always playing along on air with the 'surprising' disclosures) now asks if that big name could have been... Paul McCartney? Smeets confirms this. So what happened? Take notice: "Amerikaanse festivals schijnen toch íets belangrijker te zijn." Proper translation: "American festivals seem to be slightly more important". (Yes, emphasis on 'slightly more', so with a tongue-in-cheek undertone). That's it.

So it's sounding more and more like Summer in the US for Paul!

Well, let's hope that Denmark and Australia can get a spring tour.
