Lack of Knowledge

I cannot believe people don't know who the Beatles are, but it's true, many young people are idiots these days (and no, I'm not some crusty old 70 yr old fart, I'm only 33!). Luckily my 4 kids (ages 8, 7, 4, 2) are being raised right...they know all the names of the Beatles, albums titles and covers, loads of songs and lyrics...my wife and I are very proud of this
Maybe you should change that to "crusty old 80 year old fart" since our Paul is 70 (almost 71!)
It's no surprise, though...in today's instant-gratification culture, cheap disposable music with no thought or talent behind it is bound to be more appealing to the braindead masses than anything of quality. It's why my kids know Bach, Mozart, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, the Beatles, etc but their peers are stuck on Bieber, Lady Gaga, and the other modern crap.

The majority of the facebook generation doesnt seem to know much about music, literature, arts... It's not just the Beatles, it's a common lack of knowledge I think. People in their 30s and above don't have that problem, it would seem. Only one friend of mine when i told him I was going to Warsaw for a concert, said: "Ah yes yes, I've heard, it's the last remaining Beatle, right? which one was it exactly?" Ouch!

Well...it is true isn't it? (joking)

Mind you do you think kids in 1963 knew who Al Jolson or Enrico Caruso were?
I was a kid in '63 and I knew who they were!

Before I started working in the corporate world, I worked part-time jobs to supplement my freelance-writing. Back in '02, I worked with an 18-year-old, and we were talking about Paul McCartney's then-new tour. My hand-to-God, she asked: "Now is he going to be touring with the other Beatles or just on his own?"

American teens' testing-scores are lower than ever -- and teens are more overweight than ever, too. The Xbox generation.

My daughter is in middle school (age 13) and almost none of her friends would know who The Beatles were if she didn't come to school every day with an Abbey Road backpack wearing Beatles shirts. She is not amused at their ignorance. My sister is a dental hygienist and was telling me about working on a patient in his 20's, and somehow they got to talking about music. She had just watched the documentary on George Harrison and was trying to tell him about it, and he said, "Who?" He had never heard of him. Sad.

It's just the passage of youth. That and the fact kids now, generally speaking, live for the moment and have no interest in the past. It's an "instant coffee nentality" A You Tube, FB, social media world and they rarely have an attention span longer than 10 minutes. :
Instant coffee's gonna get ya! Sorry, couldn't resist.

I work at a music store and anyone that wants to apply for a job needs to fill a music quiz. We used to have as one of the questions to name 5 Beatles songs... It was sad to see how many people made tons of mistakes (we didn't really take their applications though). We changed it to name all the Beatles, with a similar result. Most people can name Paul & John. We also added a question where people have to match the lead singer with the band and between the choices, there's Wings and Paul. You guys should see the amount of people who think there's a mistake in the quiz (because the Beatles aren't in the choices).
Well hey, I'm not sure I could name all the Beatles. Let's see, there's Dirk, Stig, Nasty ... damn, who was the 4th?

Many people my age have heard of the Beatles. They even wear Beatles shirts (some of them) But when I ask them to name the four Beatles, they're screwed! ("Uh... Joe... Um.... Um... Bob....") And when I told everyone I saw Paul this past weekend... NO ONE CARES!! It really irks me. But who do I blame? Them or their parents?
Hey, even young Stella couldn't name John on Elton John's Beatle shirt.

My children like to joke with me ..WHO WAS THAT GROUP YOU LIKE? THE BEATLES..JOHN McCARTNEY? I know they know better. But they love to tease!! :
When my nephew was about 6, my mom and I were watching Paul when he was on Oprah. Of course we oohed and ahhed and cooed every chance we got. I remember my nephew asking me, "Is that one of the Beatles or something?" When the anthology came out, displays of Beatles stuff were everywhere. My nephew pointed at them and would tell his friends, "My aunt Kathryn loves those guys."

I know what you mean... A LOT of young people in south FL give me this same reaction. Another one I get a lot when I discuss Paul is "Oh, he's that guy from the Beatles!" I respond 'yes' and they go on to say "Wasn't he killed?" [facepalm]
I get teased about PID all the time from my bosses. "He's dead. Get over it."

Okay, I just did a little experiment. Bear in mind that I was 8 in 1964 and in high school in the early '70s, so I just looked up the top hits of the year 1930, conveniently listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930_in_music I count four names that I might have heard of when I was in high school, and one of them -- Ozzie Nelson -- I would not have known was a musician. Yet many of these people were huge stars in their day. That's life. Popular culture is ephemeral. That the Beatles are as big as they are 43 years after they split is extraordinary.
Grandpa Simpson: "I used to be cool. then they changed what cool was. now, I"m not cool anymore and what is cool is strange and scary to me. It will happen to you!"

Once upon a time, the Beatles were called, "other modern crap."

ha ha ha ha ha. I was into the music before I got into learning about the Beatles as people and George was the first one I knew anything about due to a boyfriend who worshipped him. I actually learned my Beatles history from All You Need is Cash when PBS aired it back in the mid-80s
-
...and somewhere, there are young people out there lamenting, "These old people don't know any of the new bands or musicians." I did it in the 80s only I said, "Boomers" instead of old people. Boomers where in their 30s then and they seemed stuck before 1978

For some reason i always am interested to find out more about all music. its very rare I'll find myself in a music conversation sitting there with a 'Lack of Knowledge' I'm edumacated. If you like music you should definitely know about everything the Beatles did at least I think so.
