Petition to bring Sir Paul to tour Australia! https://www.change.org/p/paul-mccartney-bring-paul-mccartney-to-australia?
Many of us have already spilled blood...
When it was announced in 2002 (or so), was it called Colonial Stadium, Telstra Stadium, Ami Stadium or Etihad Stadium?..... Been at least three name changes since it was first announced as the "big coup". Still somewhere have the Foxtel magazine where it was announced. Paul on the cover. Still very disappointed that it was cancelled.... And nothing since.
-
Still have my diamond tix...and Geoff Baker ringing in my ears... "Just a postponement...not a cancellation...we will be back." And as a loyal lifelong fan...I believed him. Bulltish artists all of them. Disgraceful treatment.

I've got a big memory of the time.... and the rationale of why it was cancelled.. Bali... (which NEVER made any sense)... in fact should've led to further concerts, and an even bigger one).... But I shall defer to you.... I feel you know a lot more about the cancellation than me (and it can't just be about money.....surely... )

Thanks for the link to the interview. For me the disappointing part of it was the way Sunrise talked it up as it obviously wasn't what they were saying. For what it was, I found it a good watch anyway. Has anyone contacted Sunrise?

I'm livid. I live a luxurious lifestyle and the way they talked it up had me drag myself out of the fart sack at sparrows! Not Happy!!!

Lets look at why he is returning to Japan in 2015 however with the same concentration of promotion, publicity, tv specials, airplay in Australia perhaps he would come and return here, is that what it takes? how much money per country that makes its may to MPL? It has been since 1993! That is known, salt has been rubbed in deeper with the "2002 postponement" the shows were poorly put together and promoted and priced they didn't sell to Paul/his peoples expectation, Bali was an excuse. Paul's usual response to a tragedy ala NYPD Sep 11 NYC concert banding together, solidarity, make people feel good was MIA with regards to the Bali bombings and Australia All us fans were teased with an announcement set with vision of macca on a stage exclusive for it to be a promotion of hope for the future, where was the promotion for his brilliant "new" or past albums where no one but the diehards have a clue. His contempories Springsteeen, Clapton, Elton John, Fogerty and Neil Young even Bob Dylan tour regularly in Australia and they don't overly promote and get huge crowds, so what the heck is limiting an ex beatle for Petes sake? discuss

Interesting point. Billy Joel, Tom Petty and other acts I would give my right arm to see perform live at least once, never ever toured South America and probably never will, while they've been mostly anywhere else. I think many factors come into play. The most important one in my humble opinion is that a promoter from a certain country or area has to come with enough money in advance to pay for the shows, and that promoter has to be sure he'll be making money, not losing, from bringing Paul to certain area. If the 2002 concerts were cancelled due to poor ticket sales, perhaps Australian promoters are thinking twice before making an offer of millions in advance to pay Paul, afraid to lose money if ticket sales are not good. That's one theory. In Europe 2013 Macca tickets were notoriously cheaper than in SA or the US. Meaning less profit. If Paul can't make the same revenue per show in Europe than in SA or the US, it's reasonable his manager will decide to go where his commission will be bigger, and Paul said in an interview it's his manager who picks the places where Paul goes. Now Mr. Petty and Mr. Joel, if you're reading this, please come to Argentina!

Not sure I have any answers. Albuquerque has the same problem, on a smaller scale. I will never understand why he can play Lubbock but not Albuquerque. Or he plays Missoula, Fargo, Lincoln, etc. but not Albuquerque. I suspect it must be the energy put into bringing him. Obviously NYC, LA, Chicago are easy sells to McCartney. Those cities have huge economies and populations to draw from. Lubbock had a team of promoters wooing him for years (perseverance) even one from New Mexico (!) helping to get that show. Albuquerque has nothing and no one trying to get him here. I called the University of New Mexico's Special Events department and asked if there was a chance they could bring a big show like McCartney to the football stadium. They just shrugged their shoulders as if to say "Who is Paul McCartney?" and said they had a limited budget of $10,000. Which is why the university rarely, if ever, has a major act playing our arena or stadium. When the Rolling Stones played here, THEY approached the university. My point for Australia is places like Tokyo and South America have promotion teams in place constantly in contact with MPL trying and negotiating to get McCartney and guaranteeing money up front. Is Australia doing that? Albuquerque isn't.

I actually emailed Barrie Marshall about all this and much to my pleasant surprise, I got a response from him. Unfortunately his responses werent too hopeful: "We are always looking at a way to play in Australia but time is a problem. We are hoping this may change in the coming years." and then this: "Thank you for your response and I appreciate your comments. Paul would love to play Australia so let?s just see what may be in the future." I think there may be more chance of him playing on the moon than here in Oz.

Stock standard rubbish. To his credit, at least he does reply. ...and I can tell you, over the years he has had and still recieves tishloads of emails!!! "Paul would love to come" - bulltish. Hasn't set foot here since 1993...for work or holiday. "Time is the problem" - bulltish.

Doesn't it take about the same amount of time to get to Japan? What does that mean??
-

How recently was this?

Emails were from 1st December

Tom Petty said it best "when money became king" a bloody manager deciding where Paul plays and off course he will make decisions to line his pockets rather than the loyal fans and the love of the music which there is so much more outside the US or Japan
