Is this song expected to chart? Anyone know?
The best chance for him to chart is through YouTube views, which Billboard now counts toward their Hot 100 singles chart. He's closing in on 500,000 views, where it was 150,000 a couple of days ago, but these are not blockbuster numbers. We won't know until next Thursday for sure, and then the following Thursday would probably be the last chance to get some traction.
The YouTube views, which just passed 534,000 aren't enough to chart. You gotta get well into the multi-millions -- Taylor Swift territory -- to be enough. Radio play remains important for the Hot 100, and here Paul's performance seems about like usual. Per FMQB, "Hope" is tied for 5th most-added new song on Triple A radio playlists this week, added by 8 stations: http://www.fmqb.com/triplea.asp Even though the song is probably getting a little action in other formats, e.g. Adult Contemporary (FMQB hasn't updated their AC page), this is not Hot 100 airplay territory. Don't expect much, chart-wise.
Yes, I suspect you're right, and I don't see evidence that my local Triple A is playing it. I was just pointing out the most likely path to a chart placing, but I'm not especially expecting it. His U.S. media blitz the other day only added a few hundred thousand views, and even his "Daily Show" appearance coming up is not likely to add to it significantly, unless they come up with some brilliant promotional gimmick. Maybe Newman the robot will show up! And Johnny Depp! And Meryl Streep! And some old blues guys!

The "Queenie Eye" official video is at 4+million views -- and even that isn't enough to get back in the charts. If you look at any random Katy Perry video, you'll see that this marginally talented, lip-synching charlatan's average video-view is nearly 1 billion. That's with a "b." God help us.

And she had the nerve to call a song "Dark Horse"! I do wonder, though, what the minimum number of views would be to get to #100 in an average week?

Off the subject, but her "Dark Horse" performance at the Grammys was a straight-up Satanic ritual. Anyway, back to Paul... ...good question, "favoritething."

The Triple A station in my city is going through an identity crisis. At one time, I could count on them to play tracks from McCartney's latest releases. Not anymore. They played absolutely nothing from NEW. And I requested songs several times. Also: I wonder if more Triple A stations are making the switch from Triple A to indie-rock -- that seems to be what mine is doing. They're firing all the older DJs, and nearly every track you hear is by one of the gazillion skinny-jeans-wearing, pansy-boy indie-bands... ...a trend I've grown tired of, frankly.
-
I've just posted "Road" and "Alligator" YouTube links at my city's Triple A station's FB page. I commented that I had no idea why they ignored this great album. It seems like Tom Petty is the only over-40 artist they will play.

'Hope for the future' doesn't seem to have made the UK top 100 (issued this evening) which really surprises me, given the BBC Radio 2 playlisting and tv exposure.
-
'Hope for the Future' is the best Macca single since 'Band on the Run'. It's a travesty if it doesn't make the Top 10 at least.

Really?? You gotta be kidding. It's not even the best single since "New."

Indeed. Even if it were a great song, there would be zero chance of Paul making the Top 10 anymore. And it's not a great song, it's an okay song at best. I'd be surprised if it cracked the U.S. Hot 100.

I don't think how good a song is has any bearing on chart positions these days I would have expected it to crack the top 100 at least, given his name. I think this new single is his best since 'Once Upon A Long Ago' or 'My Brave Face'. It's heaps better than one of my least favourite Macca singles - 'New' which joins 'C'Moon' as a contender for most annoying track he's ever recorded.
-
hey Paul, I would like to listen to your new single in the most perfect way too? So how about giving it a cd release? : http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/paul-mccartney-pulling-hair-out-over-shift-to-lo-fi-listening-habits-20141205

What an adorably naive comment. Paul has only cracked the U.S. Hot 100 once in the last ten years, with "Dance Tonight" -- which charted for one week based on a burst of digital downloads after it was in an Apple commercial. To radio programmers and the majority of today's pop music audience, Paul's name = "old," and it's a young person's medium.

True. He confuses me. His concerts are clearly a celebration of a glorious past. But he records like he wants to appeal to twenty-something hipsters. Which he is not ever going to accomplish.

No, not naive at all. I was referring to the UK top 100. Life does exist outside the U.S you know. Given the amount of exposure the single received in the UK, I was expecting it to appear in the lower regions of the chart. I think it would have done so had it not been the Christmas period with the chart full of old Xmas songs. He still regularly single charts in Japan so they obviously don't consider him 'old' over there.

What do you think he should record in order to appeal to his 'target audience'?

Well....Dance Tonight is the perfect example for ewanme`s argument that quality doesn`t determine chart success. It`s probably Paul`s most embarassing single of the past decade... As for "Hope" : it`s pretty mediocre but I must admit I still have some hope that the Mirwais mix might make a little impression after X-mas. What I find rather disturbing is that Paul seems to become a regular on the chat show circuit - with no positive result whatsoever for his releases. As someone else pointed out on this board appearances by Jagger, Dylan etc. are rare and regarded as events. The McCartney brand is nearing "supermarket" status. He`s all over the place except of course the charts. Wondering what the master plan of his marketing people was when releasing two archive albums, the NEW collectors edition plus the Art of Mccartney and now Hope for the future ALL for the X-mas season this year. How about a little focus ? It just has a desperate vibe to it.

How the hell should I know? I'm not Paul McCartney!! Nor am I his manager or producer. One thing he could do is just be Paul McCartney and record his songs that he writes, without any agenda or thought as to a target audience. If it is good, people will find it. The man is a legend and doesn't really need to pander to any group. Including computer game enthusiasts.

On the chat shows he ends up talking mostly about the Beatles sadly.
