audi:
I was just about to ask somebody to convince me what was so extra-awesome about bootlegs, but "moptops" has just done that.
John's 1977 FAAB piano demos crap on Jeff's ELO treatment...excepting George's gorgeous slide work. The speed is all over the place, but John"s simple cassette demos have an impact and poignancy the finished result lacked. And even his vocal sounds FULLER on the 1977 cassette recording. Well, that's just my opinion.
-
I was -- and still am -- shocked by how low Lennon's vocal was in the Lynn mix. Yes, I know there were limitations beyond their control, but a little volume wouldn't have hurt.
-
Exactly Audi. For me that was the biggest disappointment. Especially after reading for months prior how they had worked to "Hi fi" John's voice. ...that and giving Ringo's drums the Lynne trademark. I groaned when I learned George Martin wasn't steering the ship.
-
Actually, the biggest disappointment and surprise for me concerning the Free As A Bird recording is finding out that Jeff Lynne sang on the harmonies. WTF indeed?? The last chance ever to have purely Paul and George harmonizing as The Beatles and Lynne is like "hold on guys, let me jump in here and ruin this moment" ops:
-
Eewww... I wasn't aware of that. I'm shocked that George and Paul allowed that.
-
does he get credited?
-
Most likely, but I was definitely unaware.

Not sure where you heard that, but that is not correct. While Lynne was the co-producer, the only vocals (and players) on Free As A Bird are The Beatles.

That's what I thought. I had never read/heard anywhere about Lynne actually singing on Free As a Bird.

"PHEW!"

I believe this was about 'Real Love'. Yes, shame about the production. (And the fact the technique regarding audio restoration wasn't 10-15 years more in advance yet). But remember John Lennon himself was a big fan of Jeff Lynne too.
-
I tyink I have a boot somewhere of the Real Love sessions, with at least, an isolated vocal from Lynne.

Must be the 5.1 extractions from the Anthology DVD. Checked the official credits, and he isn't listed for any performance duties except guitar on 'Real Love'. But if I remember correctly there was some studio session footage for the recording of the song in the George Harrison docu in which you could see them all teaming up at the mic.

If Lynne sang on it, Paul, George and Ringo must have been cool with it. He didn't FORCE himself on the recording. I like it. If they are ok with it, so am I.

They must have decided that they needed three different voices if they were going to reproduce that trademark Beatles harmony sound. I just listened to the isolated 5.1 tracks, and I can't be sure, but it seems likely that Jeff is in there.

Sure. But in a recording studio, Paul or George could have easily recorded a third harmony, overdubbing their voice. I think they wanted Lynne on there. They must have.

Well, I meant a "different" voice as in a voice that had a different quality from Paul's or George's, although listening to the mix, maybe that wasn't necessary after all, as it's hard (for me) to distinguish Lynne in there!

What exactly is a "5.1 track"?

Lynne's production turned FAAB and Real Love into The Traveling ELO's. What possessed them all to dramatically speed up Real Love is beyond me. Yes, I know The Beatles altered speeds of their recordings... And Ringo's drum SOUND is dripping in "Lynne."

Maybe "Silly Love Songs" will finally be brought back this year? There's always hope... for the future!
