I see Paul lip-synching in the chorus. Doesn't prove he sang on the recording, but certainly implies it. He always looks good playing an instrument. Much better than the arm movements of "Hope for the Future." Someone mentioned Rihanna's vocal as sounding bad. I think she's just trying to get a gritty, rock and roll sound, like Sheryl Crow or Bonnie Raitt. Anyway, I think it works for the song.

What an artist does in a video is not always indicative of what they did on the recording. John Lennon mimed like he was singing on Can't Buy Me Love, when in fact he did not. Also, sometimes they act like they play an instrument they don't play, etc.

Here is Lennon miming to Can't Buy Me Love.

A lot of differing views on a lot of issues. My views: Firstly, I am not sure I have read anything by any poster that suggests a disapproval/disdain of Mr. Kardashian has anything to do with his with race. A disapproval/disdain due to his petulance, immaturity, self-love, stupidity, idiocy, ignorance, style of "music", disrespect for anyone... yes.... did I mention immaturity? But I can't recall anyone citing their disapproval of him due to his race... now I cannot stand the man, obviously, but I'd be suppressing an ache in my gut even more if it was Justin Bieber as Paul's collaborator. Secondly, as for the quality of the collaboration.... it is not offensive. Average. Nothing more than average. I give it a C+. I will stand by my opinion that it is OK, but certainly nothing that is groundbreaking. Just so-so. And, let's face it, when heavyweights get together, one expects something "special". I'm not seeing that. Give me the Traveling Wilburys. Now that was some collaboration. Thirdly, NOTHING will detract from Paul's legacy. None of it harms him. His legacy is ensured. In stone. He could prove to be producer, special guest and scriptwriter of Bruce Jenner's imminent and contrived "Now I am a woman" TV series and his legacy will still be enshrined. Happy for him to continue putting himself out there... even if I expect better from him at times.... the guy doesn't seem to have a set of brakes. And God bless him, he's going to remain a music-making machine. Even if this collaboration, for me, didn't hit the mark.
Well said! And I will just add that people can like it or they can hate it. No problem. oh...and it is very funny that I was just listening to a DVD a friend made with all the promo stuff for "Hope" & Paul stated that he likes to do new stuff & not be stuck in the past...well what the heck are those 50 year old songs in your concerts all about?

All very true. It's all about making the video more lively, like everyone's involved as much as possible. There's been no official statement that Paul sings on the track, so I'm inclined to think it's just for show in the video. I'm just saying the video will lead people to believe he's singing on it, whether he actually is or not.

Thank you! I'm getting really tired of people pulling the whole "if you don't like Kanye or this song you're a racist" stuff. As I said before there are PLENTY of songs and artists out there I'm not a fan of, doesn't mean I am racist one bit, just means I have "GASP" different tastes than others! And agree, Paul's legacy despite what some (well one in particular) are saying that it's gone for good is a load of crap. Paul's legacy is perfectly safe!

Calling someone a racist is always dangerous, since -- unless they make an explicit statement -- you can't know what a person is thinking. That said, a lot of prejudice (in all forms) is unconscious, and it's hard to avoid noticing that pretty consistently one hears a whole lot more venom when Paul collaborates with black artists than with white ones. Maybe that's just coincidence. Maybe not.
-
I love Chuck Berry. I love Little Richard. I love Nat King Cole. I love James Brown. I love The Supremes. I love the Temptations. I love Billy Preston. I love the Jackson 5. I love Michael Jackson. I love Prince. I don't like Kanye West.

I actually like the collaborations Paul did with Stevie and Michael. My point is just because somebody isn't a fan of certain types of music or certain artists does not make them a racist it just means they have different tastes and likes than others. And there are some that are throwing that word around way too much here and as you said, that can get very dangerous.
-
I also love: Stevie Wonder Marvin Gaye Sam Cooke

For me it has less to do with race, and more with the style of music. I don't listen to hip hop, enjoyed a bit of Mariah Carey's foray into it. But Kanye would be considered hip hop, and I've seen him perform. Didn't like it much. But not because of race. From what I've heard though, these songs with Paul are a real departure from what Rihanna and Kanye usually do, so they're also branching out and taking a risk. And that's what being an artist is all about. So the more I read the criticisms (which are lame for the most part), the more I'm behind their side project.
-
I have said before I don't have a problem with the songs. Maybe the style. Yet, I really like Krall's version of Paul's song. Am I racially biased? I hope not. I just prefer her style of music. But I honestly have not listened to her song any more than I have these other collaborations.

This is ridiculous. I like ______ or _______. : I think Kanye's rep has preceded him & that is what people are responding to. Which reminds me of Vince Gill's response to Kanye...see 1:27.

Seems like a sequel to John Lennon's "God." Kind of the reverse. "Kanye and me. That's not reality."

Impossible to know, but as you said earlier, there's a lot of overlap. Many people say they don't like hip hop and rap in general, and there are many possible reasons for that. Sometimes it's not racial, but sometimes it is.
