Only One- new song by Kanye West, featuring Paul

"Only One" enters FMQB's Rythmic airplay chart at #40, up 224 spins from the same period one week ago and likely to move up at least a couple notches pretty quickly, as the songs right above it in the chart seem to be losing steam: http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=255600
Perhaps all the radio activity you've mentioned will start to have an effect next week, but this week the song falls to #85 on the Hot 100. It could certainly still turn around.

And maybe it won't. Whatever one thinks of Kanye or autotune, it's not an intuitive choice for a single -- no real hooks, no catchy tune or infectious beat. Sales have dropped, and at this point radio activity hasn't been enough to compensate. It still might, but it's not a cinch. That said, it's already getting more spins than any Paul single of at least the last dozen years. Sigh...

And still inching up the Rhythmic airplay chart at #36. but yet to crack the top 40 in any other format. Not sure if it has enough momentum to inch back up in the Hot 100.

Earlier today I couldn't find it anywhere on the iTunes chart, in over 100 positions. Probably the new track is taking all the attention at this point.

Neither is on the iTunes song chart right now, but (as I posted on another thread), "Only One" is gaining momentum pretty quickly on radio, now at #31 on Rhythmic and #40 on Urban. I'm not sure I get the strategy of bringing out a second track just 3 weeks after the first one. Sounds like the sort of muddled marketing we're used to from Paul's team, but perhaps there's a method to their madness.

Well, as I posted elsewhere, the new song is #3 on iTunes.

And -- perhaps because of the video as well as still-increasing radio play -- the song has crept back onto the iTunes song chart at #96.

The "Ellen" effect sure isn't hurting either. The song is now up to #47 on iTunes. The video and Ellen go to great lengths to soften Kanye's image, seems to be working for the moment.

Marriage and having kids will do that to most men. I hope in Kanye's case it's sincere. Maybe having McCartney as a friend will do that too.

Yes, I should have mentioned Ellen! She's got a huge audience, and the video was perfect for that audience. (Off topic, I gotta say it's so totally cool that a lesbian has become America's sweetheart. There's hope for my country after all.).

Interesting fact, and I'm as surprised as anyone on this, but Kanye has actually won more Grammys than Paul, even counting Paul's time in the Beatles: 21 to 18. Yes, the Grammys are meaningless, really, and hardly worth debate, but I would attribute this to a few things: there are lots of rap categories, and Kanye has dominated rap much more than Paul has dominated "rock," at least the way the Grammys define it. Also, the Beatles were not fully appreciated in the sixties (let alone Paul in the seventies!), and I'm sure if the Grammys could have some do-overs, they certainly would hand the prize to "Hey Jude" over "Little Green Apples," for one thing! The fact that Paul won a Grammy for a performance of "Helter Skelter" over 40 years after the original speaks volumes, as does the fact that he has won more Grammys in this decade than in the seventies. (Note that Paul's Grammy numbers do not include wins for packaging or engineering or other technical awards related to his projects. By that measure, Paul probably does come out ahead.) Speaking of the Grammys, I do wonder if they'll slip a bit of "Only One" into the performance this Sunday.

"Only One" jumps back onto the Hot 100 after falling off for a week. The effect of the video plus Kanye's "Ellen" appearance is enough to bring it back in at #68. Not sure if there's enough momentum this week to keep it going, but there's a chance, if radio play and video streaming can boost it. (Originally peaked at #35.)

It might. But I don't think it'll ever be Top 20 like the Rihanna track.

Yeah, I doubt it. In his solo performance at the Grammys (after Rihanna and Paul), I'd say there's a slight chance he would do this song (which would certainly boost it up the chart), but more likely that he'll do a big, bold hip-hop track to tease the new album.
