What'd I Say? - Mumbo and other mysteries
-
Some McCartney lyrics have always been a mystery to me. Sometimes I just can't be sure what the heck he is saying (or singing). So let's start a thread to solve some of these lyrical mysteries. To start with, I'm unclear about Bip Bop. Bip Bop bam, or bang, or band? I can't tell. Mumbo? Is is just nonsense? I've never been sure. Jet - in the bridge...does he say "I'll mate her"? I would appreciate clarifications, opinions, and other lyrical oddities.

I always though he was singing "ah, mater..." in "Jet". As to what the heck in means, who knows!

Yes, "ahh, mater," it's on the lyric sheet, "mater" being Latin for "mother." Occasionally used by rich kids to address their mothers. Probably kind of a joke on Paul's part. I think "Mumbo" is mainly gibberish, just whatever came to mind. "Break it." "When I'm feelin' no pain"? Got me! I say, "Bip bop bam."
-
I think Bip Bop Bam also... Always thought Bip Bop was maybe Mary's child pronunciation of some thing?
-
Mumbo should of had proper lyrics or no lyrics at all. I think the music has a great groove to it but the gibberish lyrics distract from this. Another track that I find hard to make out some of the lyrics is Soily. Only a minor criticism of a great rocker.

"Mater" is what they called one of John's aunts.

I believe so.

I love all those child-like acoustic songs. Hey Diddle is another nice one. Silly, but catchy and pretty.

If Paul can sit in the attic, a piano up his nose, he can sing about anything.

What are they all saying before "Talk" song on "Press" album, it's supposed to be Paul and Linda putting on different weird sounding English voices.

I think part of the spoken word intro is a very young James McCartney reading something about spaceships. Other parts in intro and through out track are random phrases which I think are said by people such as Eddie Klein (the engineer) and I think maybe John Hammel Paul's long time assistant. I actually find this stuff a bit annoying. They seem to speaking in strange voices, as a joke maybe, or do they really sound this way ???

I do as well Shawn, it makes me think of those happy photos of Paul and Linda and the family in Scotland. Very precious times and memories in families...always thought diddle was little?
