It sounds like his voice was pretty bad at the Robin Hood Gala, but he was sounding great on the Asian leg of the tour.

Yeah, I think that compilation video of the Budokan show sounds fab!

I agree, it depends on the night. No criticism intended, generally Paul is doing quite well these days. I'll Follow the Sun was a little shaky vocally and Paul gives Rusty the LOOK when he hits that bum note on the solo to say "Dude! The solo has four notes!!"
Compare the same song a few years back: Still, I think Paul gives it his all, and watching him at the Robin Hood concert reminds me what a pro and pure musician he is.OMG, he sounded so much better in 2007!

His voice hasn't sounded good so far this year with the exception of the Budokan. I think once Paul gets on a roll, like in the summer, he starts to sound great. But I am a bit worried.

I am optimistic once he hits the UK in a week things will smooth out.

I wish I was that confident. If only Paul took care of his voice like Mick Jagger does. Mick doesn't speak for something like a day or two before a show. He never schedules 2 shows 2 days in a row. He's not too proud or too arrogant to have a voice coach. He protects his voice by not doing a lot of interviews ahead of a concert. Paul doesn't do any of those things. He has an opportunity here to turn around his reputation in the UK and I wish I was confident that he would approach this smartly. Guess we'll see.

I don't think it will matter how he sounds. The upcoming UK shows are just regular concerts for fans who pay to see him, they are not "important" televised events that the public cares about, like the Olympics opening ceremony and Jubliee performances were.

Well sure, but strong performances and great reviews couldn't hurt.

If you are paying to see someone perform, it matters how they sound. Or it should.

The way Paul "grinds" his voice on high notes is not good. That will cause problems. Like when he yells "JET!" or goes to the high parts of Maybe I'm Amazed. In the original recording of Jet, they shouted "Jet!" in high, clear voices. Better for the vocal chords! Even those raspy yells between songs can't be helping! Just say "Hello! Good evening!" in a loud clear voice.

Unless the performances are a complete disaster (they won't be), he'll get great reviews.
