Set List critique

I think the fact that we can pinpoiont the "surprises" during the Out There tour thus far, really prooves taht they simply are not surprises...playing "Kansas City" in (you guessed it) Kansas City...NO surprise to anyone... Again, the last time I was genuinely surprised was the launch of the Out There tour...and several of those surprises have gone by the wayside only to be replaced by songs that are no surprise at all...

I think at this stage the excitement is just being at a Paul concert. Predictable as hell, but gratefully accept any rare morsel he throws our way. I can't believe how I flipped when I saw the YouTube of Another Girl. Song rotations don't excite me anymore because for years they've been the same ins and outs. Can't Buy Me Love...meh. How about one song slot per city...reserved for a never played live song? Be it Wings/Beatles or solo.
Good point. And I think repeat offenders (people who see him every tour) are really not his concern, rather casual fans who are seeing him for the first time. For them, it is not predictable. Those of us who have seen him many times should probably just sit back and enjoy the show, if you attend.
This is why I will not attend anymore, not going to pay anywhere from $100-$250 a seat for a few changes. Mr. McCartney is all about his shows being basically a Beatlefest so let the casual fans pay the big bucks. Anyone who has seen Mr. McCartney more than once will know he is predictable and even tells the same stories each tour.

Whenever I'm asked which Beatles tribute band is the best.......my answer is always Sir Paul!

"playing "Kansas City" in (you guessed it) Kansas City...NO surprise to anyone... " Exactly, he has done this every time he has played there - lol.

The possibilities for the upcoming UK/EU/US tours are exciting; Penny Lane (and other surprises) in Liverpool Michelle in Paris and Marseille Can't Buy Me Love / Jet / Hope For The Future at all concerts Another Girl / One After 909 might return Who knows, there may be unexpected songs as well.
Exciting? I would say the above possibilities are standard pat predictable.
Exactly. Exciting for me would be "Take It Away", "I Can Bet", House of Wax", "Dance Til We're High", "Promise To You Girl", "My Brave Face or "Run Devil Run". In addition, if he ended the first encore with "Soily" I would be besides myself with joy !!

I thought Another Girl was step in the right direction. Then he doesn't play it in South Korea. Hope it comes back.

Rusty in an interview on a latest Paul's tour program makes a list of his favourite songs to add at the setlist: Another girl- I wanna hold your hand-Backseat of my car and Junk. So after played Another girl there are good chance to hear also the others songs for the future!

I know this is the Setlist Critique Thread and you guys wish Paul would play some rare songs more often (so do I), but don't you think you are being a bit too hard on the man? He doesn't even need to be touring at all, and he will probably no longer be doing it in a few years' time. Maybe we should just enjoy what we have (while we can), instead of complaining about what we do not. There will soon come a time when we'll miss all of this.

I can see your point. I made a similar comment elsewhere, ie the set list is predictable to people who see him every year, but not to first timers or casual fans. I said maybe everyone should just sit back and enjoy the show when you go. Or don't go. I would be a LOT more excited about the set list if be played Albuquerque. But it is hard to really get all up about a show in Columbia, SC or Charlottesville, VA, when you know what is going to happen. And it happens every year. It really is more exciting for those communities and people going to those shows. For those of us in Albuquerque and Australia, meh. But all of his set lists are solid. I do get a kick when I read what people wish he would play, then remember he did so many of those songs in 1993. I'm glad I saw that tour!

It's a setlist critique thread. I love the guy probably more than anyone on this board. Is he beyond criticism? No. I will never be a sop for the man, think that everything he does is gold. It ain't.

I give him brick bats more than most...I also travel the planet Earth to see him regularly. I have no guilt.

"I know this is the Setlist Critique Thread and you guys wish Paul would play some rare songs more often (so do I), but don't you think you are being a bit too hard on the man? " Not really. When an artist rarely plays anything after 1980 and it is 2015 then you have to wonder why he bothered to continue recording new music if it is never rarely going to be played live. These complaints have been going on for many years and not just this recent tour. The sad thing is we know Mr. McCartney can do it because his 1989 and 1993 tours were not as Beatle heavy and OMG he actually opened his 1989 tour with a solo song. As for touring, he loves it and the money he makes is incredible so it works for him. Like I said, he can do most of these shows in his sleep with good percentage of the same songs every night and the same between song stories. Let's not make it like we shall all get down on one knee and be grateful that he is still touring. He is a lucky man and can do whatever he wants which is better than the rest of us. Finally, it may seem harsh but in reality we complain because he has created incredible music in the last 30 years and we would love to hear it !!

I've only seen Paul in concert twice -- once in 2009 and again in 2013. There were 19 different songs on the 2013 setlist compared with the 2009 show. That seems like a pretty big setlist change to me. The problem, as we all know, is that Paul's schedule means his tour is spread out over 3 years rather than condensed into a four or five month period. So it seems like the show never changes because it's the same show spread out over 3 years. Lots of artists have a static setlist in the confines of one tour. Paul's coming near me again this summer but I'm not going because I already saw the Out There tour. When he starts a new tour, with a revised set list, then I'll go again. In a heartbeat. But I was massively satisfied with both of the shows I saw. And clearly he's not trying to appeal to me again with the latest Out There dates; he's trying to capture fans who haven't seen the show in cities he hasn't been to.

Should Paul choose to there is still time between now and may 23rd to dust off any forgotten gems, I imagine it will remain largely unchanged as b4 since Europe has hardly seen the out there tour.

The fact that the years for further tours is limited is exactly the point for the question. If not soon, when could get the world a Paul McCartney tour with an fair balance between all of his compositions? Setlists with ~75 % Beatlessongs and the same old stories is the touring history and present since 2002... When this tour is finished it's not only time for a new tourname it's time for a substantial setlist change with at least 50-60 % songs not or only a few time performed during the last decade!

That is a good point about his tour schedule being over three years. I tried to say something similar, but you did it better!
