Was No More Lonely Nights Paul's last classic?

SusyLuvsPaul:
He's composed many great and beautiful songs since "No More Lonely Nights"
But, are any well known enough by the general public to be called a classic?

The general public's knowledge of a song is no measure of a it being a classic. A hit for sure, but a classic? No way.

If you go back to the OP, the premise was that a classic had to be good and popular.

That's not my premise. I'm only stating my opinion.

If classics have to be chart toppers, does that mean Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez songs will be classics one day?
-
Considering how fast society is devolving, we're not too far from that way of thinking.

My criteria is popular & good! I dont think anyone would argue their songs have much artistic credibility except for females under the age of 14!

________________________________________________________ It all comes back to one's music definition of "classic". For an artist of Paul McCartney's stature, he has been successful for 50 plus years. As a music artist and especially composer of original songs since the early 60's, he personally is already considered a "classic music icon" in the truest sense of the word. Don't think Bieber or Gomez will ever be considered a "classic" artist/composer in any sense of the word. Forget that they may end up with a few hits that have been largely put together by their producers. Looking at Paul's full catalog (Beatles, Wings and Solo) there are even examples of "hits" that some music critics dislike. Examples include Silly Love Songs, Let Them In, My Love, Ebony and Ivory and With a Little Luck. You might even find these same critics not liking "No More Lonely Nights". Because of Mr. McCartney's stature as an artist however, I personally consider all of the above songs "classics". While most of these are not my personal Post Beatle Paul favorites, they no doubt did resonate with many, many people around the world so for that reason I would certainly consider them Paul "classics". Conversely, I do think that Paul has written many great songs (especially solo) that because of his longevity have never had chart success or aren't particularly well known but will some day be considered classics once more and more people fully digest his amazing catalog. Sadly, this will mostly happen after Paul is gone. While his Beatle songs (even those that weren't hits) have been pretty much fully digested, his later songs (from the 80's on) have not. I believe someday songs like Little Willow, Somedays, Beautiful Night, Calico Skies, Hope of Deliverance, Wanderlust, Tug of War, Early Days etc. etc. will become much better known in the future and thus "classics" to existing and future generations.

McCartney classic songs? To borrow from Joey: Silly Love Songs, Let 'Em In, My Love, Ebony and Ivory and With a Little Luck. I would add Maybe I'm Amazed, Too Many People, Band On The Run, Jet, Listen To What The Man Said, Mull of Kintyre, Live and Let Die, Coming Up and that is about it for his solo career. That's not bad! No More Lonely Nights is a good song, but is not in the canon above. I really like Hope Of Deliverance, My Brave Face, and Flaming Pie, but I would not put them in the same category as the above songs. What I mean are songs that A LOT OF PEOPLE, meaning the general public, would quote you if you said solo Paul McCartney. Which is why those songs should be the backbone of every Paul concert.

Agreed. I dont think Paul has ever done NMLN live in concert, which is a shame. I understand his logic on why he wants it to be a heavy Beatles' setlist, I just think it hurts him grow as a performer.

My Valentine is a McCartney classic to me! If he had released I Can Bet like he should have done, it would be a classic! It definitely has that classic McCartney sound! It should have been the very first single from New. Also he should be performing it live right now!

Hard to define a classic, but in my book My Valentine is a vastly better, more interesting song than No More Lonely Nights.

They can both be classics. There's plenty of room.

They can, sure. But they're not. No More Lonely Nights is mediocre, Paul on autopilot, and easily the weakest of the original tunes from Broadstreet IMHO.

You couldn't be more wrong, cousin Brucie.

My favorite is "Not Such A Bad Boy" from this disaster of a movie.
