Last Flight in Glasgow 1979 (Christmas time)

Moptops, interesting observations. Did you see any shows on the tour? I don't recall any problems with Paul's voice or Linda being heckled at the 4 shows I saw. Maybe the Scottish audiences were kinder to her. One player who was definitely not sloppy was Laurence. I always thought his solo on Let It Be was quite precise. As to the cancelled 1980 tour, I don't know the scale but I do remember hearing that after Japan, Australia was planned and then the US.
No I didn't see them but I know a girl who went to every concert! And the other stuff is stuff I've read from reviews and meeting other full on Fabs fans, like yourself. Emails from Steve...

Not voice problems as such, just that it was raspy and raw, much like his vocals on Back To The Egg. It was a nice hoarseness though! At the time a lot of folks thought it was damaged and were asking "what happened to his nice clear voice?"
-
I love that voice. Love the Back to the Egg vocals.

The 79 tour saw him cop a bit of flak. A lot of folks thought his voice was damaged. (There's irony for ya) The setlist copped a bit of flak too. "Where were the Venus and Mars songs?" "Cook Of The House, Hot As Sun, 20 Flight Rock...WTF?" The playing was loose (some said sloppy) compared to the preceding tour and it might even have been a shorter show... Paul wasn't entirely happy or satisfied with that tour. Over the years it's become many fans favourite tour - BECAUSE of the setlist and the raspiness of his vocals. Linda copped heaps of heckling too...and these being mainly theatre shows to small sudiences, made the heckling quite audible. Steve and Laurence give Wings a punchier sound too. It's a shame they didn't get to play on a follow up album. I love the 79 UK tour. I love Last Flight too. An official remixed issue with Rockestra Theme and Lucille would be awesome. Never mind all this Pure McCartney piffle!
__________________________________________________________ Robert, You might have given me a few theories as to why Paul just blew up Wings. And you're right... too bad for Steve and Laurence. They seem to be very good players and good guys. I have heard Laurence on a Breakfast with the Beatles show 4-5 years ago in Philadelphia and he seemed like a great guy. I think he had just released a CD with Beatle and Paul covers...very talented. The radio show was playing a couple of the songs from the album. I got the feeling he was very disappointed that Wings dissolved so quickly. I think I read somewhere that Linda was not keen about another World Tour. With James being born and with 4 kids (one a teenager) it makes sense that it would be harder to drag the kids on a major tour with them. At the same time, she probably wouldn't want to be away from them either. I never realized that on the 79 mini tour that they had played smaller theatre shows. Getting heckled why being out front playing Cook of the House might have dampen her enthusiasm also. Then I heard when Paul got jailed she was very upset. With this happening before the actual World Tour began, you can almost guess what she was saying to Paul when they got home from Japan. And if Paul wasn't too pleased with the 79 tour, maybe it didn't take too much coaxing for Paul to agree. Maybe with all the stress from the Japanese Jailing fiasco, Paul wanted to abandon another World tour also. Maybe he had the same feelings that Linda had about touring because of the difficulty it would pose for their family. Going Solo would make it much easier for family and personal life. What were Paul's quotes/comments at the time regarding the drug bust, the future touring with his new Wings' Band etc. It is ironic about the flak from the setlist and his vocals in 79. You would think that with all the new Wings' songs (and the new Beatle songs...Let It Be, Got to Get You into My Life, Fool on the Hill) that people would be thrilled and they would put up with Cook of the House, Hot as Sun, and Twenty flight Rock. And his voice sounded good to me judging by the audio from that Last Flight in Glasgow show. He sounded great on MIA, Let It Be and Yesterday for example.
He BJ, I loved his raspy voice on that tour buy at the time many folks didn't. I think you're spot on re the theory about James too. I reckon the 79 tour wasvnot a very happy experience for Paul and Linda...probably just bored with it, and Linda wanted out. I think Paul himself opened up about it on Wingspan.

Nice! A couple of my friends went to many of the shows, all of the ones in London for sure, plus the ones in Scotland with me. And speaking of London, I forgot that in addition to the theatre shows he did there (the Rainbow and the one in Lewisham), there were a couple of shows at Wembley Arena. So there are those larger shows, which I think had the same setlist. Would have been interesting to see how/if the tour would have been tweaked for the US, where he probably would have played arenas. We shall never know.

Sorry Nightfish after my post I saw the last part of yours re: the tour extending! My bad.

"Would have been interesting to see how/if the tour would have been tweaked for the US, where he probably would have played arenas. We shall never know. " Your are right we will never know but I think we can make educated guess. Obviously, "Wonderful Christmas Time" would be gone and I think "Cook Of The House" would also be eliminated. "Go Now" would give Denny a lead vocal but it was done in 1976 so don't see that being done in the US either. Now if those three were truly eliminated it would have been interesting to hear what would replace them. Would Mr. McCartney have gone back and done songs like "Beware My Love"? Maybe a different 50's cover song? Maybe something like "Name And Address from "London Town" where Mr. McCartney does his best Elvis impersonation - lol.

As far as listening to the audio of "Last Flight" on U-tube, here are were some of my favorites: *Let It Be - I had heard this before and it reminded me that this is quite possibly my favorite version ever. His voice and phrasing sounded so soulful. *Yesterday - Liked the fact that Paul sang the complete song (not the abbreviated version) . On the 2nd time singing "why she had to go she wouldn't say, Paul then asks the audience to sing the next part "I said something wrong...". The Glasgow audience sounded great singing that small part. I had never remember Paul doing that and it came off very well. *No Words" - 1st time ever hearing this hidden gem; Denny and Paul sound great harmonizing with an extended ending. *Coming Up - Because Paul sang Coming Up before it was actually released, he was still flushing out the lyrics. I remember him singing "making music endlessly" which is not used on the actual recording. *Every Night - really liked the slower arrangement than the original; Paul would later used this arrangement for his Unplugged Cd over 10 years later. *Mull of Kintyre - Not surprising, the audience loved this and sang very loudly. *Back to the Egg - I have to say I liked all the songs from Egg.; surprised that he did "Arrow Through Me" and that sounded real good "live". It is sad that he never got to the US with this tour. I think that Egg was a very underrated album and these songs sounded much better Live" I too liked Paul's raspy voice. I didn't see it being that different than the 76 tour; maybe a little more raspy. Maybe Paul didn't tour in those towns/cities in 76 and the voice sounded much different to them from his Beatle days.
-
Sadly Back To The Egg didn't do nearly as well as they (and Columbia) had hoped.
-
Listen to how hoarse his voice is at Concerts For Kampuchea.

Go Now was performed only in L.A. during WOA.

Meanwhile back in Glasgow... This was my first Macca concert and a glorious memory. Just a fantastic night, one that hasn't been equalled in 14 times I've seen him since. There have been many great, memorable moments at those other gigs but nothing has surpassed this gig as a whole; incredible atmosphere especially with all 3000 in the audience chanting his name. Its such a shame that theatre venues like the Apollo have been superseded by the like of the Hydro, O2, Echo Arena etc. (or even worse football/soccer stadiums). I think this thread was originally about the setlist and I do remember coming out of the Apollo, slightly disappointed that I hadn't heard Hi Hi Hi, Soily or Live and Let Die. But I loved what he did with Band on the Run. Also interesting to note the balls of throwing in a brand new song as the second to last song in the main set before the encores (almost as brave as finishing with Soily on the WOA tour). I was also disappointed that the Rickenbacker had been ditched.

Nancy...don't go by that link...it shows Wings playing "Go Now" at most venues of WOA...it was just the 3 shows in L.A. With all the boots of the '76 tour available, name one that has "Go Now" from a U.S. or Canadien city other than L.A. Get a copy of the latest BEATLEFAN magazine...it has a great review of the WOA Tour...including the exclusive addition of "Go Now" in Los Angeles. I'm done...believe whatever you want to.

What he said ^^. Played in 1973 in Europe and in 1975 even in Australia. By the time he finally toured the US in 1976 the song was not part of the set until LA, the final dates of the US leg, "by special request". Then he kept it in the set for European gigs after that as well, and eventually he played it again in 1979. But not in the US in 1976 anywhere else than in LA, the wealth of audience tapes from this tour documents that pretty well.
