Paul Simon, "Stranger to Stranger"

SusyLuvsPaul:
I think they thought that song had a soothing message, considering all the hell that's been unleashed in the U.S. and the world this summer. Also contained the lines "Sail on silver girl, sail on by, your time has come to shine, all your dreams are on the way" which pertained to Hillary Clinton at the DNC, made you think of her triumph and glory
And he supposedly wrote it in the same rented house on Blue Jay Way that George used.

I finally got this album. My expectations were pretty high since it's Paul Simon. Most of his generation peaked a long time ago, but I think he's at his peak right now. Everything after Capeman has been great, and this one is no exception. It took me a while to get into Paul McCartney's last album, but I liked Paul Simon's right away. My only real complaint is that the instrumental tracks are entirely too short. "Proof of Love" reminded me too much of "Wartime Prayers". I don't know if that's good or bad. A few lyrics that stuck in my head: The Werewolf Life is a lottery A lot of people lose ... I'm not complaining Just the opposite, my friend I know it's raining But we're coming to the end of the rainbow Street Angel God goes fishing And we are the fishes He baits his lines With prayers and wishes They sparkle in the shallows They catch the falling light We hide our hearts like holy hostages We're hungry for the love, and so we bite Cool Papa Bell Ugly got a case to make It's not like every rodent gets a birthday cake No, it's, You're a chipmunk, how cute is that But you, you motherfucker, are a filthy rat

Is this a Halloween album?

Leonard Cohen is another 80 plus year old who has been putting out critically lauded albums these past few years, and is touring. Simon may not be touring, but he's still "got it." A new book is out about Simon, "Homeward Bound," and is said to be excellent.

I got the book a couple of weeks ago. It's good, but early on the author refers to The Chad Mitchell Trio as The Chad Everett Trio. Chad Everett starred on the TV series Medical Center, in the 1970s.

I am seeing Paul live at the BIC, Bournemouth tomorrow evening. Having seen him live with my long-time hero Sting at the O2 Arena last year, I was excited when it was announced that he is playing a solo show in my part of the country. The BIC is a medium-sized venue with a capacity of about 4000, and I know from seeing Mark Knopfler there several times that the sound in there is terrific. Very much looking forward to this!

Just back from the show. Paul and his band were astonishing. His voice is in superb form - it seems to have changed very little since Graceland. Hard to believe this man is now 75 years of age! Seriously, if you haven't seen him live before and you get the chance, GO! You won't regret it.

Glad you had a great time! He was fantastic when I saw him back in June. Did he do "Werewolf?"
-
Yes, he did play The Werewolf. It was one of my favourite songs of the night. He is also still performing a couple of songs from his previous album, So Beautiful Or So What, which were also received very well. It really was a superb show. I lost count of the number of encores he did!
-
Not long ago he said he was quitting show biz, that he was tired of it. Nice to see he changed his mind.

I finally found my Paul Simon "So Beautiful...Or So What" cd--shamefully had never listened to it....am going to soon (and also get his new one). I have heard one song off "So Beautiful or So What" called "The Obvious Child"--heard in a movie by the same name. It's very upbeat, can dance to it, that's what they did in the movie
-
"The Obvious Child" is from the 1990 album "Rhythm of the Saints" -- a decent album but a disappointment (to me at least) after "Graceland." Here's the tracklisting for "So Beautiful or So What" -- http://www.paulsimon.com/music/so-beautiful-or-so-what/

That's like saying "Say Say Say" is on Chaos and Creation.

I found my cassette tape of Simon's "Rythmn of the Saints"--now I just need to get something that plays cassettes. A boom box with all three, CD player, cassette player recorder, radio stations. Have got my eye on one. Plan to get my ears on it I guess that seems low tech and retro

I still have a bunch of old cassettes, but no working device to play them on. Cassettes were pretty wretched technology.
-
I bought that boom box, haven't tried it yet. It's still possible to find such in order to play cassettes. I hate when they get all tangled up and ruined Like you, I've got a bunch of them in a big basket.

Back when I was in school, there was a picture of a cassette in our ancient history book.
