Obscure Singers, Musicians Recalled
-
P.J. Proby--always wondered, what did he sound like? Texan who moved to England in the early sixties to get noticed, become a pop star. Like James Taylor and Tori Amos did.
-
Singer Gale Garnett, who was a girlfriend of the late film director John Huston. Read that in part 1 of Angelica Huston's interesting autobiography. Wendy Waldman, who sang "Living is good, living is good, I don't mind if everything's not going the way I think it should, living is good, living is good." Nice upbeat 70's song and I like her other stuff too. "Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks" band

Leon Redbone
I once saw Leon Redbone live, as opening act for John Prine (who's not really obscure but not a household name either). He was odd but quite entertaining.

Birdie--too talented to be obscure

SusyLuvsPaul:
Billy Joe Royal ("Down in the Boondocks") has passed away in Morehead City, North Carolina. He had become so obscure that he even played my smallish county seat town. He sounded like Gene Pitney, sort of.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shame to hear about Billy Joe Royal. I never followed his career but I loved the song "Down in the Boondocks". Whenever I heard it on the radio, I would always sing with Billy Joe. Just liked the overall sound of the song and Billy Joe's voice. I think Mr. Royal had a couple of follow-up songs. Not nearly as big as "Down in the Boondocks" but got some airplay. Anybody knows any of Billy Joe's follow-up songs. Thanks

______________________________________________________ Thanks Nancy. That's the one I was thinking of. Good song but not near as good as "Down in the Boondocks". If I recall it sounded pretty similar.
