Liverpool 2003 - King's Dock gig
-
I was at that show as it was part of a Beatles tour I went on with a tour group based in the US. It was amazing - nothing like seeing Paul in his hometown. I was able to hear the sound check from right outside the venue. When he did Celebration on the piano I literally froze and couldn't breathe. Had tears in my eyes - it was soooo beautiful. And Paul was in outstanding form and the city was really syched for him to be playing there. Plus he had just announced that he and Heather were expecting a baby so emotionally he was really on a high.

OMG...that song is beautiful. I was just watching a utube vid the other day & it had the lyrics written out...now I can't find it. Here's one with the lyrics. It's by Jose Carreras.
High above this overcrowded place A distant blackbird flies through space and all he does is search for love love is all the matters in the end whatever time I have to spend will be with you for ever true Love is the oldest secret of the universe Warm as the touch of two innocent lovers when they discover... and now it's all we ever really know the past and future come and go because they do, I'll stay with you. -
Hi Oobu24 - so nice of you to post the lyrics. Beautiful song - lyrically and musically. Always gives me chills when he plays it Thanks

I was at that concert and had such a good time.

^ yep me too, main memories are actually being in the queue before, I was bursting... but we were told if we left the queue we'd have to join the back as it was close to gates opening. Paul was running late (no surprise there!) and instead of enjoying hearing the soundcheck i practically cried, people around me were joking and offering me a cup (very funny for a girl in jeans!), but i swear another 10 minutes and i would've wet myself The things i say on forums eh... anyway, when the gates open, instead of running to the front, i ran to the loo! Then we got about 8th row, which was relief, in every way 5 years to the day later was the anfield gig, i also went to the loo as soon as gates opened, and then got about 5th row! I swear after the 2003 torture i don't even drink on gig days (teatotal anyway, but soft drinks i avoid apart from a sip so i dont faint!!!) so i don't need to the loo! Enough about my toilet habits But yes the Paul gig was amazing. Aren't they always

Back when he did special things for a Liverpool gig, hehe.
Well the next 2 liverpool gigs he did after that he added special things in (08 and 11). It's just the most recent one a couple of years ago that was a normal gig - i guess no reason for it not to be.

In the U.K. you have a lot of "floor general admission" I have seen. I personally would never go to a concert unless I have an assigned seat and it's in an indoor arena! That's why I skipped going to see Paul in Atlanta at Piedmont Park in 2009. Hot as hell, general admission, and I heard it rained later. Definitely not my cup of tea!

In an arena setting, "floor general admission" is for standing events only. Where seats are available in arenas, these are on a strictly monitored pre-assigned seat system and not on a "first come first served" basis.

Yeah like Johnny said it's not that many, just may seem that way to some as it's often the big benefit/special event shows that do a standing floor for big acts. When i saw Paul at Cardiff in the huge millenium stadium in 2010 they'd put seats on the floor. I think the only standing general admission Paul gigs i've been to were liverpool 2003, liverpool 2008, the roundhouse 2007, and liverpool 2010 in the tiny place i can't remember the name of Now THAT queue killed me!

Well, that's WAY more standing general admission than we have here. Usually only outdoor festivals have that. You'd never have it at a regular concert for Paul here.

I knew she meant standing floor general admission. I just left out the word standing. My point was that I would never want to have to run for a spot and stand the entire time. Too old for that, sorry! Have to have a seat!

Even more so, the only seated gigs I've ever attended in my life - and I go to gig or 50 a year - were a few McCartney gigs in territories where they enforce that for oldies acts (North America, UK, Germany). Sucks the atmopshere out of the venue. Oh, and a Ringo Starr concert in a stale beer hall in Germany during his only European tour in the last ... 20-25? years. Luckily that was general admission, no champagne package/bigwig lottery.

"Sucks the atmosphere out of the venue?" Oh, well, I guess it's whatever you're used to. Agree to disagree.

Most smaller US gigs in ballrooms, clubs, etc., still do standing general admission. Most arena and stadium bands do not, and that includes most non-"oldies" acts like Taylor Swift, etc. U2 and Bruce Springsteen are exceptions, they have been doing GA standing floors for many years, in both arenas and stadiums.

I can fully understand your preference for seated concerts, absolutely. But for me, the atmosphere for a rock concert just isn't up to par when you don't have a crowd who struggled together as a team for those spots at the front, who shared their beers and jumps and sings along together when the moment is there. It's an unmissable part to a rock concert. The reason why you always have the Wings-signs being held up in groups with McCartney being overjoyed, the semi-spontaneous 'Yellow Submarine'- and 'Give Peace A Chance'-singalongs and the band buzzing off that and improvising along and 'Ram On' requests in The Netherlands (and other territories). I guess it's a cultural difference. Mind, I'm annoyed by a lot of other aspects of the concert experience over here. McCartney gigs over here often attract a group of people who normally don't leave the house lol.

I know, but even then the US non-baby boom rock concerts I've been to lack in that aspect. The venue gigs are alright, but a few of the arena concerts I've seen there had either two sections of general admission split up, or due to over-protective security measures barely 75% of the sections filled up. That's just killing, and the acts feel that as well. Anyway, this all isn't meant as dig, because I love a lot of other things about the US concert experience, for example that almost everything is an event, the excitement can be felt from the walk to the venue on, and even in the media. We over here just aren't fussed any more and are indifferent.

Ringo's last European Tour was in 2011.

Yes, which was his only European tour in the last - I looked it up now - 20 years. I saw him then, in 2011, as said. A seated gig wouldn't have sold here - haha, we're aaaaalmost on back on topic! - and his fee is high, so he did a festival gig in The Netherlands. (Btw his first and last appearance at all in The Netherlands, yes. Beatles included).

I cannot believe it's been 14 years since this show!!!!
